1 Or Roboam vint à Sichem; car c’est là que tout Israël s’était assemblé pour l’établir roi.
And Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for to Shechem hath all Israel come to make him king.
2 Mais Jéroboam, fils de Nabath, pendant qu’il était encore réfugié en Egypte, loin de la présence du roi Salomon, ayant appris sa mort, revint de l’Egypte.
And it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's hearing (and he [is] yet in Egypt where he hath fled from the presence of Solomon the king, and Jeroboam dwelleth in Egypt),
3 Car on envoya et on l’appela. Jéroboam vint donc, et toute la multitude d’Israël; et ils parlèrent à Roboam, disant:
that they send and call for him; and they come — Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel — and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,
4 Votre père nous a imposé un joug très dur: vous donc maintenant, tempérez un peu le gouvernement très dur de votre père, et le joug très pesant qu’il nous a imposé, et nous vous servirons.
'Thy father made hard our yoke, and thou, now, make light [some] of the hard service of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'
5 Roboam leur répondit: Allez jusqu’au troisième jour, et revenez vers moi. Or, lorsque le peuple s’en fut allé,
And he saith unto them, 'Go — yet three days, and come back unto me;' and the people go.
6 Le roi Roboam tint conseil avec les anciens qui étaient auprès de Salomon son père, lorsqu’il vivait encore, et il demanda: Quel conseil me donnez-vous, afin que je réponde à ce peuple?
And king Rehoboam consulteth with the elders who have been standing in the presence of Solomon his father, in his being alive, saying, 'How are ye counselling to answer this people?'
7 Ceux-ci répondirent: Si vous obéissez maintenant à ce peuple, si vous vous soumettez et que vous cédiez à leur demande, et que vous leur disiez des paroles de douceur, ils vous seront soumis pour toujours.
And they speak unto him, saying, 'If, to-day, thou art servant to this people, and hast served them, and answered them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.'
8 Roboam abandonna le conseil que les anciens lui avaient donné, et consulta les jeunes gens qui avaient été nourris avec lui et qui étaient auprès de lui;
And he forsaketh the counsel of the elders which they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, who are standing before him;
9 Et il leur dit: Quel conseil me donnez-vous, afin que je réponde à ce peuple, qui m’a dit: Allégez le joug qu’a imposé votre père sur nous?
and he saith unto them, 'What are ye counselling, and we answer this people, who have spoken unto me, saying, Lighten [somewhat] of the yoke that thy father put upon us?'
10 Et ces jeunes gens qui avaient été nourris avec lui, lui répondirent: C’est ainsi que vous parlerez à ce peuple qui vous a parlé, disant: Votre père a appesanti notre joug; vous, soulagez-nous. C’est ainsi que vous leur parlerez: Mon plus petit doigt est plus gros que le dos de mon père.
And they speak unto him — the lads who had grown up with him — saying, 'Thus dost thou say to this people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make [it] light upon us; thus dost thou speak unto them, My little [finger] is thicker than the loins of my father;
11 Ainsi donc mon père a imposé sur vous un joug pesant; mais moi j’ajouterai à votre joug: mon père vous a déchirés avec des verges; mais moi je vous déchirerai avec des scorpions.
and now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I — I chastise you with scorpions.'
12 Jéroboam vint donc, et tout le peuple, vers Roboam, le troisième jour, comme Roboam l’avait déclaré, disant: Revenez vers moi au troisième jour.
And they come — Jeroboam and all the people — unto Rehoboam, on the third day, as the king had spoken, saying, 'Come back unto me on the third day.'
13 Et le roi répondit au peuple des choses dures, abandonnant le conseil que les anciens lui avaient donné,
And the king answereth the people sharply, and forsaketh the counsel of the elders which they counselled him,
14 Et il leur parla selon le conseil des jeunes gens, disant: Mon père a appesanti votre joug; mais moi j’ajouterai à votre joug: mon père vous a déchirés avec des verges; mais moi je vous déchirerai avec des scorpions.
and speaketh unto them, according to the counsel of the lads, saying, 'My father made your yoke heavy, and I add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I — I chastise you with scorpions;'
15 Et le roi n’écouta point le peuple, parce que le Seigneur s’était détourné de lui, pour effectuer la parole qu’il avait dite par l’entremise d’Ahias, le Silonite, à Jéroboam, fils de Nabath.
and the king hearkened not unto the people, for the revolution was from Jehovah, in order to establish His word that Jehovah spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.
16 C’est pourquoi le peuple, voyant que le roi n’avait point voulu les écouter, lui répondit, disant: Quelle part avons-nous avec David? ou quel héritage avec le fils d’Isaï? Va dans tes tabernacles, Israël; maintenant voyez votre maison, ô David. Et Israël s’en alla dans ses tabernacles.
And all Israel see that the king hath not hearkened unto them, and the people send the king back word, saying, 'What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse; to thy tents, O Israel; now see thy house, O David!' and Israel goeth to its tents.
17 Mais c’est sur tous les enfants d’Israël qui demeuraient dans les villes de Juda, que régna Roboam.
As to the sons of Israel, those dwelling in the cities of Judah — over them reign doth Rehoboam.
18 Le roi Roboam envoya ensuite Aduram, qui était surintendant des tributs; et tout Israël le lapida, et il mourut. Or le roi Roboam, se hâtant, monta sur son char, et s’enfuit à Jérusalem.
And king Rehoboam sendeth Adoram who [is] over the tribute, and all Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;
19 Et Israël s’est tenu séparé de la maison de David jusqu’au présent jour.
and Israel transgresseth against the house of David unto this day.
20 Or il arriva que, lorsque tout Israël eut ouï que Jéroboam était revenu, on envoya, et on l’appela, l’assemblée s’étant réunie, et on l’établit roi sur tout Israël, et nul ne suivit la maison de David, excepté la seule tribu de Juda.
And it cometh to pass, at all Israel's hearing that Jeroboam hath returned, that they send and call him unto the company, and cause him to reign over all Israel; none hath been after the house of David save the tribe of Judah alone.
21 Mais Roboam vint à Jérusalem, assembla toute la maison de Juda et la tribu de Benjamin, au nombre de cent quatre-vingt mille hommes de guerre choisis, pour combattre contre la maison d’Israël, et remettre le royaume à Roboam, fils de Salomon.
And Rehoboam cometh to Jerusalem, and assembleth all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen warriors, to fight with the house of Israel, to bring back the kingdom to Rehoboam son of Solomon.
22 Alors la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Séméias, homme de Dieu, disant:
And the word of God is unto Shemaiah a man of God, saying,
23 Parle à Roboam, fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, à toute la maison de Juda et de Benjamin, et au reste du peuple, disant:
'Speak unto Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the rest of the people, saying,
24 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Vous ne monterez point et vous ne ferez point la guerre contre vos frères, les enfants d’Israël: que chaque homme retourne en sa maison, car c’est par moi qu’a été fait ceci. Ils écoutèrent la parole du Seigneur, et ils s’en retournèrent comme leur avait ordonné le Seigneur.
Thus said Jehovah, Ye do not go up nor fight with your brethren the sons of Israel; turn back each to his house, for from Me hath this thing been;' and they hear the word of Jehovah, and turn back to go according to the word of Jehovah.
25 Or Jéroboam bâtit Sichem sur la montagne d’Ephraïm, et il y habita; et, étant sorti de là, il bâtit Phanuel.
And Jeroboam buildeth Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and dwelleth in it, and goeth out thence, and buildeth Penuel;
26 Et Jéroboam dit en son cœur: Maintenant le royaume retournera à la maison de David,
and Jeroboam saith in his heart, 'Now doth the kingdom turn back to the house of David —
27 Si ce peuple monte à Jérusalem pour sacrifier dans la maison du Seigneur: et le cœur de ce peuple se tournera vers son seigneur Roboam, roi de Juda, et ils me tueront et retourneront à lui.
if this people go up to make sacrifices in the house of Jehovah in Jerusalem, then hath the heart of this people turned back unto their lord, unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they have slain me, and turned back unto Rehoboam king of Judah.'
28 Et, ayant réfléchi mûrement à son dessein, il fit deux veaux d’or, et dit au peuple: Ne montez plus à Jérusalem; Israël, voici tes dieux qui t’ont retiré de la terre d’Egypte.
And the king taketh counsel, and maketh two calves of gold, and saith unto them, 'Enough to you of going up to Jerusalem; lo, thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'
29 Or il en plaça un à Béthel et l’autre à Dan.
And he setteth the one in Beth-El, and the other he hath put in Dan,
30 Et cela devint un sujet de péché; car le peuple allait pour adorer ce veau jusqu’à Dan.
and this thing becometh a sin, and the people go before the one — unto Dan.
31 Et il fit des temples sur les hauts lieux, et des prêtres des derniers du peuple, qui n’étaient point d’entre les enfants de Lévi.
And he maketh the house of high places, and maketh priests of the extremities of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi;
32 Il ordonna aussi un jour solennel dans le huitième mois, le quinzième jour du mois, à l’imitation du jour de solennité qui se célébrait en Juda. Et, montant à l’autel, il fit de même à Béthel pour sacrifier aux veaux qu’il avait fabriqués; et il établit dans Béthel les prêtres des hauts lieux qu’il avait bâtis.
and Jeroboam maketh a festival in the eighth month, in the fifteenth day of the month, like the festival that [is] in Judah, and he offereth on the altar — so did he in Beth-El — to sacrifice to the calves which he made, and he hath appointed in Beth-El the priests of the high places that he made.
33 Et il monta à l’autel qu’il avait construit dans Béthel, le quinzième jour du huitième mois, qu’il avait établi selon son gré; et il fit une solennité aux enfants d’Israël, et monta à l’autel pour brûler de l’encens.
And he offereth up on the altar that he made in Beth-El, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month that he devised of his own heart, and he maketh a festival to the sons of Israel, and offereth on the altar — to make perfume.
