1 Corinthiens 8
1 Quant à ce qu’on offre en sacrifice aux idoles, nous savons que nous avons tous une science suffisante. La science enfle, mais la charité édifie.
Now about “food sacrificed to idols.” So “we all have knowledge” about this subject. Knowledge makes us proud, but love strengthens us.
2 Si quelqu’un se persuade savoir quelque chose, il ne sait pas encore comment il doit savoir.
If anyone thinks they know anything, they don't know as they really should know!
3 Mais si quelqu’un aime Dieu, celui-là est connu de lui.
But whoever loves God is known by God…
4 À l’égard des viandes qui sont immolées aux idoles, nous savons qu’une idole n’est rien dans le monde, et qu’il n’y a nul Dieu que l’unique.
So regarding eating food sacrificed to idols: we know that there are no such things as idols in the world, and that there is only one real God.
5 Car, quoiqu’il y ait ce qu’on appelle des dieux, soit dans le ciel, soit sur la terre (or il y a ainsi beaucoup de dieux et beaucoup de seigneurs);
Even though there are some things called “gods,” whether in heaven or on earth—in fact there are many “gods” and “lords.”
6 Pour nous, cependant, il n’est qu’un seul Dieu, le Père, de qui toutes choses viennent, et nous surtout, qu’il a faits pour lui; et qu’un seul Seigneur, Jésus-Christ, par qui toutes choses sont, et nous aussi par lui.
But for us there is only one God, the Father, from whom everything was made, and he is the goal of our existence; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom everything was made, and he is the means of our existence.
7 Mais cette science n’est pas en tous. Car, même jusqu’à cette heure, quelques-uns, dans la persuasion de la réalité de l’idole, mangent des viandes comme ayant été offertes à l’idole: ainsi leur conscience, qui est faible, s’en trouve souillée.
But not everyone has this “knowledge.” Some who up to now have been so used to idols as a reality that when they eat food sacrificed to an idol, their conscience (which is weak) tells them they have defiled themselves.
8 Ce ne sont point les aliments qui nous recommandent devant Dieu. Car si nous mangeons, nous n’aurons rien de plus; et si nous ne mangeons pas, rien de moins.
But food doesn't gain us God's approval! If we don't eat this food, we're not bad, and if we do eat this food, we're not good.
9 Mais prenez garde que cette liberté que vous avez ne soit aux faibles une occasion de chute.
Just take care not to use this freedom you have to eat food sacrificed to idols to become offensive to those with a weaker attitude.
10 Car si quelqu’un voit celui qui a la science assis à table dans un temple d’idoles, sa conscience, qui est faible, ne le portera-t-elle pas à manger des viandes sacrifiées?
If another believer sees you who have such “better knowledge” eating food in an idol temple, won't his weak conscience be convinced to eat food sacrificed to idols?
11 Ainsi, par votre science, périra votre frère encore faible, pour qui le Christ est mort.
By your “better knowledge” the weaker believer is destroyed, a believer for whom Christ died.
12 Or, péchant de la sorte contre vos frères, et blessant leur conscience faible, vous péchez contre le Christ.
In this way you sin against other believers, wounding their weaker consciences, and you sin against Christ.
13 C’est pourquoi, si ce que je mange scandalise mon frère, je ne mangerai jamais de chair, afin de ne point scandaliser mon frère. (aiōn g165)
So if eating food sacrificed to idols would cause my fellow believer to stumble, I will never eat such meat ever again, so that I don't offend any believer. (aiōn g165)
