Romains 7
1 Ignorez-vous donc, frères, — car je parle à des gens qui connaissent la loi — que la loi n'a d'autorité sur une personne, qu'aussi longtemps que celle-ci est en vie?
ARE you unacquainted, brethren, (for I am speaking to those who know the law, ) that the law exercises dominion over a person for as long time as he liveth?
2 Ainsi, la femme mariée est liée par la loi à son mari, tant qu'il est vivant; mais si le mari vient à mourir, elle est dégagée de la loi qui la liait à lui.
For the woman who is subject to a husband, is bound by the law to that husband during his life; but if the husband be dead, she is discharged from that husband.
3 Si donc, du vivant de son mari, elle devient la femme d'un autre, elle sera appelée adultère; mais si le mari meurt, elle est affranchie de la loi, de sorte qu'elle n'est point adultère en devenant la femme d'un autre.
She shall therefore certainly be counted an adulteress, if, her husband being alive, she be for another man: but if her husband is dead, she is free from the law; so that she shall be no adulteress, though married to another husband.
4 De même, mes frères, vous aussi, vous êtes morts à la loi, par le sacrifice du corps de Christ, pour appartenir à un autre, à celui qui est ressuscité des morts afin que nous portions des fruits pour Dieu.
Wherefore, my brethren, ye also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye might be for another, who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit for God.
5 En effet, lorsque nous vivions selon la chair, les passions mauvaises, excitées par la loi, agissaient dans nos membres et produisaient des fruits pour la mort.
For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions excited by the law, wrought powerfully in our members, to bring forth fruit unto death.
6 Mais maintenant, étant morts à cette loi qui nous tenait captifs, nous en sommes affranchis, pour servir Dieu sous le régime nouveau de l'Esprit, et non sous le régime vieilli de la lettre.
But now we have been discharged from the law, that being dead by which we were held fast; that we should serve in renovation of spirit, and not in the antiquity of the letter.
7 Que dirions-nous donc? La loi est-elle une puissance de péché? Non certes! Mais je n'ai connu le péché que par la loi; car je n'aurais pas connu la convoitise, si la loi n'eût dit: «Tu ne convoiteras point!»
What then shall we say? Is the law sin? God forbid. Yea, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not even known concupiscence, unless the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8 C'est le péché qui, ayant saisi l'occasion, a produit en moi, par le commandement, toutes sortes de convoitises; car, sans la loi, le péché est mort.
But sin, seizing the opportunity by the law, wrought in me all concupiscence. For without the law sin is dead.
9 Autrefois, j'étais sans loi, et je vivais, mais quand le commandement est venu, le péché a repris vie, et moi, je suis mort, —
For though I lived without the law formerly; yet when the commandment came, sin revived, but I died.
10 de sorte qu'il s'est trouvé que le commandement, qui devait me donner la vie, m'a conduit à la mort.
And the commandment, which was for life, the same was found by me for death.
11 Car le péché, ayant saisi l'occasion, m'a séduit par le commandement même, et par lui m'a fait mourir.
For sin, seizing the occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and thereby slew me.
12 Ainsi, la loi est sainte, et le commandement est saint, juste et bon.
So then the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
13 Ce qui est bon est-il donc devenu pour moi une cause de mort? Non certes! Mais c'est le péché qui m'a fait mourir, afin qu'il se manifestât comme péché, en me donnant la mort par ce qui est bon; en sorte que, par le moyen du commandement, le péché a atteint son dernier degré de gravité.
Did then that which is good become fatal to me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin by that which was good in itself, was the cause of death to me; that sin through the commandment might become transcendantly sinful.
14 Nous savons, en effet, que la loi est spirituelle; mais moi, je suis charnel, vendu et asservi au péché.
For we know that the law is spiritual; but I am fleshly, sold under sin.
15 Car je ne comprends pas ce que je fais: je ne fais pas ce que je veux, mais je fais ce que je hais.
For that which I am doing I approve not: for not the thing which I wish, that do I practise; but the very thing I hate, that I do.
16 Or, si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, je reconnais par là que la loi est bonne.
But if what I would not, that I do, I concur with the law that it is excellent.
17 Et alors, ce n'est plus moi qui agis ainsi, mais c'est le péché qui habite en moi.
Now then no more I do this, but sin dwelling in me.
18 En effet, je sais que ce qui est bon n'habite point en moi, c'est-à-dire dans ma chair, parce que j'ai la volonté de faire le bien, mais je n'ai pas le pouvoir de l'accomplir;
For I know that there dwelleth not in me (that is, in my flesh) any good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 car je ne fais pas le bien que je veux, mais je fais le mal que je ne veux pas.
For I do not the good which I wish: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 Si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, ce n'est plus moi qui agis ainsi, mais c'est le péché qui habite en moi.
If then I do that which I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21 Je trouve donc en moi cette loi: Quand je veux faire le bien, le mal est attaché à moi.
I find then a law, that, when I wish to do good, evil is presented to me.
22 Car, dans mon être intime, je prends plaisir à la loi de Dieu;
For I am delighted with the law of God, as respecting the inward man:
23 mais je vois dans mes membres une autre loi qui combat contre la loi de mon entendement, et qui me rend captif de la loi du péché, qui se trouve dans mes membres.
but I see another law in my members, militating against the law in my mind, and making me captive to the law of sin which is in my members.
24 Misérable que je suis! Qui me délivrera de ce corps de mort?
O wretched man, I! who shall pluck me from the body of this death?
25 Grâces soient rendues à Dieu par Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur! Ainsi donc, je suis moi-même assujetti, par l'entendement, à la loi de Dieu, mais, par la chair, à la loi du péché.
I give thanks to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Well then, I myself with my mind am servant to the law of God; but in my flesh to the law of sin.
