Romains 2
1 Toi donc, ô homme, qui que tu sois, qui juge les autres, tu es inexcusable; car, en les jugeant, tu te condamnes toi-même, puisque toi qui les juges, tu fais les mêmes choses.
Therefore you are without excuse, O man, whoever you are who judge. For in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself. For you who judge practise the same things.
2 Or, nous savons que le jugement de Dieu contre ceux qui se rendent coupables de telles actions est conforme à la vérité.
We know that the judgement of God is according to truth against those who practise such things.
3 Penses-tu donc, toi qui juges ceux qui commettent de tels actes et qui les commets, que tu échapperas toi-même au jugement de Dieu?
Do you think this, O man who judges those who practise such things, and do the same, that you will escape the judgement of God?
4 Ou méprises-tu les richesses de sa bonté, de sa patience, de sa longanimité, et ne reconnais-tu pas que la bonté de Dieu te convie à la repentance?
Or do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
5 Par ton endurcissement et par l'impénitence de ton coeur, tu t'amasses un trésor de colère pour le jour de la colère et de la manifestation du juste jugement de Dieu,
But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath, revelation, and of the righteous judgement of God,
6 qui rendra à chacun selon ses oeuvres:
who “will pay back to everyone according to their works:”
7 la vie éternelle à ceux qui, en persévérant à faire le bien, cherchent la gloire, l'honneur et l'immortalité; (aiōnios g166)
to those who by perseverance in well-doing seek for glory, honour, and incorruptibility, eternal life; (aiōnios g166)
8 mais à ceux qui, dans un esprit de contradiction, désobéissent à la vérité et obéissent à l'injustice, — à eux la colère et l'indignation!
but to those who are self-seeking and don’t obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, will be wrath, indignation,
9 Oui, détresse et angoisse pour toute âme d'homme qui fait le mal, pour le Juif d'abord, et aussi pour le Grec;
oppression, and anguish on every soul of man who does evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
10 mais gloire, honneur et paix à tout homme qui fait le bien, au Juif d'abord, et aussi au Grec!
But glory, honour, and peace go to every man who does good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
11 Car, devant Dieu, il n'y a point d'acception de personnes.
For there is no partiality with God.
12 Tous ceux qui auront péché sans la loi, périront aussi sans la loi; et tous ceux qui auront péché ayant la loi, seront jugés par la loi;
For as many as have sinned without the law will also perish without the law. As many as have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.
13 car ce ne sont pas ceux qui entendent lire la loi qui sont justes devant Dieu, mais ceux-là seuls qui pratiquent la loi seront justifiés.
For it isn’t the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified
14 En effet, quand les Païens, qui n'ont pas la loi, font naturellement les choses que la loi commande, ces hommes, qui n'ont pas la loi, se tiennent lieu de loi à eux-mêmes.
(for when Gentiles who don’t have the law do by nature the things of the law, these, not having the law, are a law to themselves,
15 Ils font voir que l'oeuvre commandée par la loi est écrite dans leurs coeurs: leur propre conscience en témoigne, et leurs pensées tantôt les accusent, tantôt même les défendent.
in that they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying with them, and their thoughts amongst themselves accusing or else excusing them)
16 C'est ce qui apparaîtra le jour où, selon mon Évangile, Dieu jugera par Jésus-Christ les actions secrètes des hommes.
in the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my Good News, by Jesus Christ.
17 Mais toi, qui portes le nom de Juif, qui te reposes sur la loi, qui te glorifies de ton Dieu,
Indeed you bear the name of a Jew, rest on the law, glory in God,
18 toi qui connais sa volonté et qui sais discerner la différence des choses, instruit que tu es par la loi;
know his will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law,
19 toi qui te flattes d'être le conducteur des aveugles, la lumière de ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres,
and are confident that you yourself are a guide of the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,
20 le docteur des ignorants, le maître des simples, ayant dans la loi la règle de la connaissance et de la vérité,
a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babies, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth.
21 toi donc qui enseignes les autres, tu ne t'enseignes pas toi-même!- Toi, qui prêches qu'on ne doit pas dérober, tu dérobes!
You therefore who teach another, don’t you teach yourself? You who preach that a man shouldn’t steal, do you steal?
22 Toi, qui dis qu'il ne faut pas commettre d'adultère, tu commets l'adultère! Toi, qui as en abomination les idoles, tu t'empares de leurs dépouilles!
You who say a man shouldn’t commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
23 Toi, qui te glorifies de la loi, tu déshonores Dieu par la transgression de la loi!
You who glory in the law, do you dishonour God by disobeying the law?
24 En effet, «le nom de Dieu est blasphémé à cause de vous parmi les nations», — comme dit l'Ecriture.
For “the name of God is blasphemed amongst the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written.
25 Sans doute, la circoncision est utile, si tu pratiques la loi; mais si tu transgresses la loi, tu n'es plus, avec ta circoncision, qu'un incirconcis.
For circumcision indeed profits, if you are a doer of the law, but if you are a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
26 Si donc l'incirconcis observe les commandements de la loi, son incirconcision ne sera-t-elle pas tenue pour circoncision?
If therefore the uncircumcised keep the ordinances of the law, won’t his uncircumcision be accounted as circumcision?
27 Et celui qui, tout en restant incirconcis, accomplit cependant la loi, te jugera, toi qui, avec la lettre de la loi et la circoncision, es transgresseur de la loi.
Won’t those who are physically uncircumcised, but fulfil the law, judge you, who with the letter and circumcision are a transgressor of the law?
28 Car celui-là n'est pas Juif, qui ne l'est qu'au dehors, et la circoncision n'est pas celle qui se fait extérieurement dans la chair;
For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh;
29 mais celui-là est Juif qui l'est au dedans, et la vraie circoncision est celle du coeur, faite selon l'esprit, et non selon la lettre. Un tel Juif tire sa louange, non pas des hommes, mais de Dieu.
but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men, but from God.
