Romains 13

1 Que toute personne soit soumise aux autorités placées au-dessus de nous; car il n'y a pas d'autorité qui ne vienne de Dieu, et celles qui existent ont été instituées par Dieu.

Let every soul to the higher authorities be subject, for there is no authority except from God, and the authorities existing are appointed by God,

2 Ainsi, celui qui résiste à l'autorité, s'oppose à l'ordre que Dieu a établi; et ceux qui s'y opposent, attireront sur eux le jugement.

so that he who is setting himself against the authority, against God's ordinance hath resisted; and those resisting, to themselves shall receive judgment.

3 En effet, ceux qui gouvernent ne sont pas à craindre pour les bonnes actions, mais pour les mauvaises. Veux-tu ne pas avoir à craindre l'autorité? Fais le bien, et tu auras son approbation;

For those ruling are not a terror to the good works, but to the evil; and dost thou wish not to be afraid of the authority? that which is good be doing, and thou shalt have praise from it,

4 car le magistrat est ministre de Dieu pour ton bien. Mais si tu fais le mal, crains; car ce n'est pas en vain qu'il porte l'épée: il est ministre de Dieu pour exercer la justice et pour punir celui qui fait le mal.

for of God it is a ministrant to thee for good; and if that which is evil thou mayest do, be fearing, for not in vain doth it bear the sword; for of God it is a ministrant, an avenger for wrath to him who is doing that which is evil.

5 C'est pourquoi, il est nécessaire de se soumettre, non seulement par crainte de la punition, mais encore par motif de conscience.

Wherefore it is necessary to be subject, not only because of the wrath, but also because of the conscience,

6 C'est pour la même raison que vous payez des impôts; car les magistrats sont les serviteurs de Dieu, quand ils s'acquittent fidèlement de leur fonction.

for because of this also pay ye tribute; for servants of God they are, on this very thing attending continually;

7 Rendez à tous ce qui leur est dû: l'impôt, à qui est dû l'impôt; le tribut, à qui est dû le tribut; la crainte, à qui est due la crainte; l'honneur, à qui est dû l'honneur.

render, therefore, to all [their] dues; to whom tribute, the tribute; to whom custom, the custom; to whom fear, the fear; to whom honour, the honour.

8 N'ayez de dettes envers personne, si ce n'est l'amour que vous vous devez les uns aux autres; car celui qui aime son prochain a accompli la loi.

To no one owe anything, except to love one another; for he who is loving the other — law he hath fulfilled,

9 En effet, ces commandements: «Tu ne commettras point d'adultère; tu ne tueras point; tu ne déroberas point; tu ne convoiteras point» — et tels autres qu'on pourrait encore citer, — tous se résument dans cette parole: «Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même.»

for, 'Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false testimony, Thou shalt not covet;' and if there is any other command, in this word it is summed up, in this: 'Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself;'

10 L'amour ne fait point de mal au prochain; l'amour est donc l'accomplissent de la loi.

the love to the neighbour doth work no ill; the love, therefore, [is] the fulness of law.

11 Au surplus, vous savez dans quel temps nous vivons: l'heure est venue de vous réveiller de votre sommeil, puisque le salut est maintenant plus près de nous que lorsque nous avons cru.

And this, knowing the time, that for us, the hour already [is] to be aroused out of sleep, for now nearer [is] our salvation than when we did believe;

12 La nuit est avancée, le jour approche; dépouillons-nous donc des oeuvres des ténèbres et revêtons-nous des armes de la lumière.

the night did advance, and the day came nigh; let us lay aside, therefore, the works of the darkness, and let us put on the armour of the light;

13 Marchons honnêtement, comme en plein jour. Ne vous livrez pas aux excès et à l'ivrognerie, à la débauche et au dérèglement, aux querelles et à la jalousie;

as in day-time, let us walk becomingly; not in revellings and drunkennesses, not in chamberings and lasciviousnesses, not in strife and emulation;

14 mais revêtez-vous du Seigneur Jésus-Christ, et ne prenez pas soin de la chair de manière à en exciter les convoitises.

but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and for the flesh take no forethought — for desires.
