1 Quand le Seigneur eut appris que les pharisiens avaient entendu dire qu'il faisait et baptisait plus de disciples que Jean,
Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
2 — toutefois ce n'était pas Jésus lui-même qui baptisait, mais c'étaient ses disciples, —
(although Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples),
3 il quitta la Judée et retourna en Galilée.
he left Judea and departed into Galilee.
4 Or, il fallait qu'il passât par la Samarie.
He needed to pass through Samaria.
5 Il arriva donc à une ville de Samarie, nommée Sichar, près du champ que Jacob avait donné à Joseph, son fils.
So he came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Là se trouvait le puits de Jacob. Jésus, fatigué de la route, s'assit auprès du puits; c'était environ la sixième heure.
Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being tired from his journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 Une femme samaritaine vint puiser de l'eau. Jésus lui dit: Donne-moi à boire.
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”
8 Car ses disciples étaient allés à la ville pour acheter des vivres.
For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9 La femme samaritaine lui répondit: Comment, toi qui es Juif, me demandes-tu à boire, à moi qui suis une femme samaritaine? — Les Juifs, en effet, n'ont pas de relations avec les Samaritains. —
The Samaritan woman therefore said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
10 Jésus répondit et lui dit: Si tu connaissais le don de Dieu, et qui est celui qui te dit: Donne-moi à boire, — tu lui aurais demandé toi-même à boire, et il t'aurait donné une eau vive.
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
11 La femme lui dit: Seigneur, tu n'as rien pour puiser, et le puits est profond; d'où aurais-tu donc cette eau vive?
The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. So where do you get that living water?
12 Es-tu plus grand que Jacob, notre père, qui nous a donné ce puits et qui en a bu lui-même, aussi bien que ses fils et ses troupeaux?
Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his children and his livestock?”
13 Jésus lui répondit: Quiconque boit de cette eau aura encore soif;
Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again,
15 La femme lui dit; Seigneur, donne-moi de cette eau, afin que je n'aie plus soif, et que je ne vienne plus ici pour puiser de l'eau.
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I do not get thirsty, neither come all the way here to draw.”
16 Jésus lui dit: Va, appelle ton mari, et reviens.
Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17 La femme répondit: Je n'ai point de mari. Jésus reprit: Tu as raison de dire: Je n'ai point de mari;
The woman answered, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You said well, ‘I have no husband,’
18 car tu as eu cinq maris, et celui que tu as maintenant n'est pas ton mari; en cela tu as dit vrai.
for you have had five husbands; and he whom you now have is not your husband. This you have said truly.”
19 La femme lui dit: Seigneur, je vois que tu es un prophète!
The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.
20 Nos pères ont adoré sur cette montagne; et vous dites, vous, que le lieu où il faut adorer est à Jérusalem.
Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”
21 Jésus lui répondit: Femme, crois-moi; l'heure vient où vous n'adorerez plus le Père ni sur cette montagne, ni à Jérusalem.
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
22 Vous adorez ce que vous ne connaissez pas. Nous, nous adorons ce que nous connaissons; car le salut vient des Juifs.
You worship that which you do not know. We worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.
23 Mais l'heure vient, et elle est déjà venue, où les vrais adorateurs adoreront le Père en esprit et en vérité: ce sont là les adorateurs que le Père demande.
But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers.
24 Dieu est Esprit, et il faut que ceux qui l'adorent, l'adorent en esprit et en vérité.
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
25 La femme lui répondit: Je sais que le Messie — c'est-à-dire le Christ — doit venir; quand il sera venu, il nous annoncera toutes choses.
The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming, he who is called Christ. When he has come, he will declare to us all things.”
26 Jésus lui dit: Je le suis, moi qui te parle.
Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who speaks to you.”
27 A ce moment, ses disciples arrivèrent, et ils furent surpris de ce qu'il parlait avec une femme. Pourtant, aucun d'eux ne lui dit: Que lui demandes-tu? ou: Pourquoi parles-tu avec elle?
Just then, his disciples came. They marveled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no one said, “What are you looking for?” or, “Why do you speak with her?”
28 La femme laissa donc sa cruche et s'en alla à la ville; et elle dit aux gens de l'endroit:
So the woman left her water pot, went away into the city, and said to the people,
29 Venez voir un homme qui m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait: ne serait-ce pas le Christ?
“Come, see a man who told me everything that I have done. Can this be the Christ?”
30 Alors ils sortirent de la ville et allèrent vers Jésus.
They went out of the city, and were coming to him.
31 Cependant les disciples insistaient auprès de lui, en disant: Maître, mange.
In the meanwhile, the disciples urged him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
32 Il leur répondit: J'ai pour me nourrir un aliment que vous ne connaissez pas.
But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”
33 Les disciples se disaient donc l'un à l'autre: Quelqu'un lui aurait-il apporté à manger?
The disciples therefore said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?”
34 Jésus leur dit: Ma nourriture est de faire la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé, et d'accomplir son oeuvre.
Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.
35 Ne dites-vous pas qu'il y a encore quatre mois jusqu'à la moisson? Mais moi, je vous dis: Levez les yeux et regardez les campagnes, déjà blanches pour la moisson.
Do not you say, ‘There are yet four months until the harvest’? Behold, I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, that they are white for harvest already.
36 Déjà le moissonneur reçoit son salaire et amasse du fruit pour la vie éternelle, afin que le semeur et le moissonneur en aient ensemble de la joie. (aiōnios g166)
He who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit to consummate (aiōnios g166) life; that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
37 Car c'est ici qu'on peut dire en toute vérité: Autre est le semeur, autre le moissonneur.
For in this the saying is true, ‘One sows, and another reaps.’
38 Je vous ai envoyés moissonner où vous n'aviez pas travaillé; d'autres ont travaillé, et vous, vous êtes entrés dans leur travail.
I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
39 Plusieurs des Samaritains de cette ville crurent en lui, à cause de la parole de la femme qui lui avait rendu ce témoignage: Il m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait.
From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, “He told me everything that I have done.”
40 Les Samaritains, étant donc venus vers lui, le prièrent de demeurer chez eux; et il y demeura deux jours.
So when the Samaritans came to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed there two days.
41 Il y en eut beaucoup plus qui crurent en lui après avoir entendu sa parole.
Many more believed because of his word.
42 Et ils disaient à la femme: Ce n'est plus à cause de ce que tu nous as dit, que nous croyons; car nous l'avons entendu nous-mêmes, et nous savons que c'est lui qui est véritablement le Sauveur du monde.
They said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of your speaking; for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
43 Après ces deux jours, Jésus partit de là et s'en alla en Galilée;
After the two days he went out from there and went into Galilee.
44 — car il avait déclaré lui-même qu'un prophète n'est point honoré dans sa patrie. —
For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
45 Lorsqu'il fut arrivé en Galilée, il fut bien reçu des Galiléens qui avaient vu tout ce qu'il avait fait à Jérusalem pendant la fête; car ils étaient allés, eux aussi, à la fête.
So when he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also went to the feast.
46 Il vint donc de nouveau à Cana en Galilée, où il avait changé l'eau en vin. Or, il y avait à Capernaüm un officier royal, dont le fils était malade.
Jesus came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water into wine. There was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 Cet officier, ayant appris que Jésus était venu de Judée en Galilée, alla le trouver et le pria de descendre pour guérir son fils, qui était mourant.
When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to him and begged him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
48 Jésus lui dit: Si vous ne voyez des miracles et des prodiges, vous ne croyez pas!
Jesus therefore said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will in no way believe.”
49 L'officier royal lui répondit: Seigneur, descends, avant que mon enfant ne meure!
The nobleman said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50 Jésus lui dit: Va, ton fils vit! Cet homme crut à la parole que Jésus lui avait dite, et il s'en alla.
Jesus said to him, “Go your way. Your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.
51 Comme il était déjà en route, ses serviteurs vinrent à sa rencontre et lui dirent: Ton fils vit.
As he was going down, his servants met him and reported, saying “Your child lives!”
52 Il leur demanda à quelle heure il s'était trouvé mieux. Ils lui répondirent: Hier, à la septième heure, la fièvre l'a quitté.
So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. They said therefore to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour, the fever left him.”
53 Le père reconnut que c'était à cette heure-là que Jésus lui avait dit: Ton fils vit. Et il crut, lui et toute sa maison.
So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” He believed, as did his whole house.
54 Ce nouveau miracle fut le second que fit Jésus, à son retour de Judée en Gahlée.
This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judea into Galilee.
