1 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le déclare, celui qui n'entre pas par la porte dans la bergerie, mais qui y monte par un autre endroit, celui-là est un voleur et un brigand.
In truth I tell you, whoever does not go into the sheepfold through the door, but climbs up at some other place, that man is a thief and a robber;
2 Mais celui qui entre par la porte est le berger des brebis.
but the man who goes in through the door is shepherd to the sheep.
3 Le portier lui ouvre, et les brebis entendent sa voix; il appelle ses brebis par leur nom, et il les mène dehors.
For him the watchman opens the door; and the sheep listen to his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out.
4 Quand il les a toutes fait sortir, il marche devant elles, et les brebis le suivent, parce qu'elles connaissent sa voix.
When he has brought them all out, he walks in front of them, and his sheep follow him, because they know his voice.
5 Mais elles ne suivront pas un étranger; au contraire, elles le fuiront, parce qu'elles ne connaissent point la voix des étrangers.
They will not follow a stranger, but will run away from him; because they do not know a stranger’s voice.”
6 Jésus leur dit cette similitude, mais ils ne comprirent pas ce qu'il voulait dire.
This was the allegory that Jesus told them, but they did not understand of what he was speaking.
7 Jésus leur dit encore: En vérité, en vérité, je vous le déclare, je suis la porte des brebis.
So he continued: “In truth I tell you, I am the Door for the sheep.
8 Tous ceux qui sont venus avant moi sont des voleurs et des brigands; mais les brebis ne les ont pas écoutés.
All who came before me were thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not listen to them.
9 Je suis la porte: si quelqu'un entre par moi, il sera sauvé; il entrera et sortira, et il trouvera de la pâture.
I am the Door; he who goes in through me will be safe, and he will go in and out and find pasture.
10 Le voleur ne vient que pour dérober, pour égorger et pour détruire; moi, je suis venu, afin que les brebis aient la vie, et qu'elles l'aient en abondance.
The thief comes only to steal, to kill, and to destroy; I have come that they may have Life, and may have it in greater fullness.
11 Je suis le bon berger; le bon berger donne sa vie pour ses brebis.
I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.
12 Le mercenaire, qui n'est pas le berger, et à qui les brebis n'appartiennent pas, s'il voit venir le loup, abandonne les brebis et s'enfuit; et le loup les ravit et les disperse.
The hired man who is not a shepherd, and who does not own the sheep, when he sees a wolf coming, leaves them and runs away; then the wolf seizes them, and scatters the flock.
13 C'est qu'il est mercenaire, et qu'il ne se soucie pas des brebis.
He does this because he is only a hired man and does not care about the sheep.
14 Je suis le bon berger! Je connais mes brebis, et mes brebis me connaissent,
I am the Good Shepherd; and I know my sheep, and my sheep know me —
15 comme le Père me connaît et comme je connais le Père; et je donne ma vie pour mes brebis.
Just as the Father knows me and I know the Father — and I lay down my life for the sheep.
16 J'ai encore d'autres brebis qui ne sont pas de cette bergerie; il faut aussi que je les amène. Elles entendront ma voix, et il y aura un seul troupeau, un seul berger!
I have other sheep besides, which do not belong to this fold; I must lead them also, and they will listen to my voice; and they shall become one flock under ‘one Shepherd.’
17 Voici pourquoi le Père m'aime: c'est parce que je donne ma vie, afin de la reprendre.
This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life — to receive it again.
18 Personne ne me l'ôte, mais je la donne de moi-même; j'ai le pouvoir de la donner, et j'ai le pouvoir de la reprendre: j'ai reçu cet ordre de mon Père.
No one took it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to receive it again. This is the command which I received from my Father.”
19 Les Juifs furent de nouveau divisés, à cause de ces paroles.
In consequence of these words a difference of opinion again arose among the Jews.
20 Plusieurs d'entre eux disaient: Il est possédé d'un démon, il est hors de sens; pourquoi l'écoutez-vous?
Many of them said: “He is possessed by a demon and is mad; why do you listen to him?”
21 D'autres disaient: Ce ne sont pas là les paroles d'un possédé. Un démon peut-il ouvrir les yeux des aveugles?
Others said: “This is not the teaching of one who is possessed by a demon. Can a demon give sight to the blind?”
22 On célébrait à Jérusalem la fête de la Dédicace. C'était l'hiver;
Soon after this the Festival of the Re-dedication was held at Jerusalem.
23 et Jésus se promenait dans le temple, sous le portique de Salomon.
It was winter; and Jesus was walking in the Temple Courts, in the Colonnade of Solomon,
24 Les Juifs se rassemblèrent autour de lui, et lui dirent: Jusques à quand nous tiendras-tu l'esprit en suspens? Si tu es le Christ, dis-le-nous franchement.
when the Jews gathered round him, and said: “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us so frankly.”
25 Jésus leur répondit: Je vous l'ai dit, et vous ne croyez pas; les oeuvres que je fais au nom de mon Père me rendent témoignage.
“I have told you so,” replied Jesus, “and you do not believe me. The work that I am doing in my Father’s name bears testimony to me.
26 Mais vous ne croyez pas, parce que vous n'êtes pas de mes brebis.
But you do not believe me, because you are not of my flock.
27 Mes brebis entendent ma voix; je les connais, et elles me suivent.
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me;
29 Mon Père, qui me les a données, est plus grand que tous; et personne ne peut les ravir de la main du Père.
What my Father has entrusted to me is more than all else; and no one can snatch anything out of the Father’s hands.
30 Moi et le Père, nous sommes un.
The Father and I are one.”
31 Les Juifs prirent de nouveau des pierres pour le lapider.
The Jews again brought stones to throw at him;
32 Jésus leur dit: J'ai fait sous vos yeux beaucoup de bonnes oeuvres de la part du Père; pour laquelle me lapidez-vous?
and seeing this, Jesus said: “I have done before your eyes many good actions, inspired by the Father; for which of them would you stone me?”
33 Les Juifs lui répondirent: Ce n'est pas pour une bonne oeuvre que nous te lapidons, mais pour un blasphème, parce que, étant homme, tu te fais Dieu.
“It is not for any good action that we would stone you,” answered the Jews, “but for blasphemy; and because you, who are only a man, make yourself out to be God.”
34 Jésus leur répondit: N'est-il pas écrit dans votre Loi: «J'ai dit: Vous êtes des dieux»?
“Are there not,” replied Jesus, “these words in your Law — ‘I said “Ye are gods”’?
35 Si elle a appelé «dieux» ceux à qui la parole de Dieu était adressée, et si l'Écriture ne peut être anéantie,
If those to whom God’s word were addressed were said to be ‘gods’ — and Scripture cannot be set aside —
36 comment dites-vous que je blasphème, — moi que le Père a consacré et qu'il a envoyé dans le monde; — parce que j'ai dit: Je suis le Fils de Dieu?
Do you say of one whom the Father has consecrated and sent as his Messenger to the world ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said ‘I am God’s Son’?
37 Si je ne fais pas les oeuvres de mon Père, ne me croyez point.
If I am not doing the work that my Father is doing, do not believe me;
38 Mais si je les fais, quand même vous ne me croiriez pas, croyez à mes oeuvres, afin que vous appreniez et que vous sachiez que le Père est en moi, et que je suis dans le Père.
if I am doing it, even though you do not believe me, believe what that work shows; so that you may understand, and understand more and more clearly, that the Father is in union with me, and I with the Father.”
39 Ils cherchaient encore à s'emparer de lui; mais il s'échappa de leurs mains.
Upon this the Jews again sought to arrest him; but he escaped their hands.
40 Puis il s'en alla de nouveau au delà du Jourdain, à l'endroit où Jean avait baptisé tout d'abord, et il y demeura.
Then Jesus again crossed the Jordan to the place where John used to baptize at first, and stayed there some time, during which many people came to see him.
41 Beaucoup de gens vinrent à lui, et ils disaient: Jean n'a fait aucun miracle, mais tout ce que Jean a dit de cet homme était vrai.
“John gave no sign of his mission,” they said; “but everything that he said about this man was true.”
42 Et il y en eut là plusieurs qui crurent en lui.
And many learned to believe in Jesus there.
