Actes 22
1 Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez ce que j'ai à vous dire maintenant pour ma défense.
“Brother and fathers,” he said, “Please listen as I give my defense before you.”
2 Quand ils l'entendirent parler en langue hébraïque, ils redoublèrent d'attention. Alors il dit:
When they heard him speaking to them in Aramaic, they became very quiet.
3 Je suis Juif, né à Tarse, en Cilicie; mais j'ai été élevé ici dans cette ville, aux pieds de Gamaliel, instruit dans la connaissance exacte de la loi de nos pères. J'étais plein de zèle pour Dieu, comme vous l'êtes tous aujourd'hui.
“I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia,” he began. “However, I was brought up here in this city, and sat at the feet of Gamaliel. I was taught to strictly observe the law of our fathers. I was zealous for God, just like all of you here today,
4 Cette secte, je l'ai persécutée à mort, chargeant de chaînes et jetant en prison hommes et femmes:
and I persecuted the people of this Way—having them put to death, and imprisoning both men and women.
5 le souverain sacrificateur m'en est témoin, ainsi que toute l'assemblée des anciens. C'est d'eux, en effet, que je reçus des lettres pour les frères de Damas, où je me rendis, afin de jeter aussi dans les chaînes ceux qui se trouvaient là et de les amener à Jérusalem pour les y faire punir.
As the high priest and the council of the elders can also verify, I received from them letters of authorization addressed to the Jewish brothers in Damascus, and went there to arrest these people and bring them as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.
6 Or il arriva, comme j'étais en chemin et que j'approchais de Damas, vers midi, que tout à coup une grande lumière, venant du ciel, resplendit autour de moi.
At around noon, while I was on my way and approaching Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven shone all around me.
7 Je tombai à terre, et j'entendis une voix qui me disait: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?
I fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’
8 Je répondis: Qui es-tu. Seigneur? La voix me dit; Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes.
‘Who are you, Lord?’ I answered. ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, the one you are persecuting,’ he told me.
9 Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n'entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.
Those who were traveling with me did see the light, but they didn't hear the voice that spoke to me.
10 Alors je m'écriai: Que ferai-je, Seigneur? Le Seigneur me répondit: Lève-toi, va à Damas, et là on te dira tout ce qu'il t'est ordonné de faire.
‘What shall I do, Lord?’ I asked. The Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you'll be told everything that's arranged for you to do.’
11 Et comme je n'y voyais pas, à cause de l'éclat de cette lumière, ceux qui étaient avec moi me prirent par la main, et j'allai à Damas.
Since I couldn't see because of the brightness of the light, those who were with me led me by the hand into Damascus.
12 Un certain Ananias, homme pieux selon la loi, auquel tous les Juifs demeurant à Damas rendaient un bon témoignage, vint me trouver;
There a man called Ananias came to see me. He was a religious man who observed the law, and was highly respected by the Jews who lived in the town.
13 et, se tenant devant moi, il me dit: Saul, mon frère, recouvre la vue. Au même instant, je recouvrai la vue et je vis Ananias.
He stood in front of me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive back your sight.’ At that very moment I could see again, and I looked at him.
14 Puis il me dit: Le Dieu de nos pères t'a destiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir le Juste et à entendre la parole de sa bouche.
He told me, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, to see the one who is truly good and right, and to listen to what he has to say to you.
15 Car tu seras pour lui, devant tous les hommes, le témoin des choses que tu as vues et entendues.
You will testify for him to everyone about what you have seen and heard. So what are you waiting for?
16 Et maintenant, que tardes-tu? Lève-toi, sois baptisé et purifié de tes péchés, en invoquant son nom.
Get up, be baptized, and wash away your sins as you call on his name.’
17 De retour à Jérusalem, comme je priais dans le temple, je fus ravi en extase;
I returned to Jerusalem, and as I was praying in the Temple, I fell into a trance.
18 et je vis Jésus qui me disait: Hâte-toi, sors promptement de Jérusalem; car on n'y recevra point le témoignage que tu me rendras.
I saw a vision of the Lord telling me, ‘Hurry! You need to leave Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept what you are telling them about me.’
19 Je répondis: Seigneur, ils savent eux-mêmes que je mettais en prison et que je faisais battre de verges dans les synagogues ceux qui croient en toi.
I replied, ‘Lord, they certainly know that I went from synagogue to synagogue, beating and imprisoning those who trusted in you.
20 Lorsque fut répandu le sang d'Etienne, ton témoin, j'étais là, j'approuvais, et je gardais les vêtements de ceux qui le faisaient mourir.
When Stephen was killed for testifying about you I was standing there in full agreement with those who killed him, holding their coats for them.’
21 Alors il me dit: Va; car je t'enverrai au loin, vers les Païens.
The Lord told me, ‘Leave now, for I am sending you far away to the foreigners.’”
22 On avait écouté Paul jusque-là; mais à ce mot, ils se mirent à crier: Ote de la terre un tel homme! Il n'est pas digne de vivre!
Up until this point they had listened to what he was saying, but then they started shouting, “Get rid of this man from the earth—he doesn't deserve to live!”
23 Ils poussaient des cris; ils jetaient leurs vêtements, et faisaient voler la poussière en l'air.
They screamed and tore off their coats and threw dust into the air.
24 Le tribun ordonna alors de mener Paul dans la forteresse et de lui donner la question par le fouet, afin de savoir pour quel sujet ils criaient ainsi contre lui.
The commander ordered Paul brought into the fortress, and gave orders for him to be interrogated by flogging so he could find out the reason people were shouting so much against Paul.
25 Comme on l'attachait pour lui donner les coups, Paul dit au centenier qui était présent: Vous est-il permis de battre de verges un citoyen romain, qui n'a pas même été condamné?
As they stretched him out and tied him down to flog him, Paul asked the centurion standing there, “Is it legal to flog a Roman citizen who hasn't had a trial?”
26 A ces paroles, le centenier alla avertir le tribun: Que vas-tu faire? lui dit-il; car cet homme est citoyen romain.
When the centurion heard what Paul said, he went to the commander and asked him, “What are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen.”
27 Le tribun, étant venu, dit à Paul: Dis-moi, es-tu citoyen romain? Oui, répondit Paul.
The commander came, and asked Paul, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” Paul replied, “Yes I am.”
28 Le tribun reprit: J'ai acheté à grand prix ce droit de citoyen. Et moi, dit Paul, je l'ai par ma naissance.
“I paid a lot of money to buy Roman citizenship,” said the commander. “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.
29 Aussitôt, ceux qui devaient lui donner la question s'éloignèrent; et le tribun eut peur, quand il sut que celui qu'il avait fait charger de liens était citoyen romain.
Those who were about to interrogate Paul left immediately. The commander was worried when he found out that Paul was a Roman citizen because he had placed him in chains.
30 Le lendemain, voulant savoir exactement de quoi Paul était accusé par les Juifs, le tribun lui fit ôter ses liens; et, ayant ordonné aux principaux sacrificateurs et à tout le Sanhédrin de se réunir, il amena Paul et le fit comparaître devant eux.
The next day, wanting to find out the reason why the Jews were accusing Paul, he had him released and taken before the chief priests and the whole council which he ordered to assemble. He had Paul brought down and placed him before them.
