Luc 2
1 Vers cette époque, parut un édit de César-Auguste ordonnant le recensement de tous les habitants de la terre.
In those days Augustus Caesar issued an edict for a census of the whole inhabited world.
2 Ce recensement fut le premier, et Cyrénius était alors légat impérial en Syrie.
This was the first census, When Quirinius was governor of Syria.
3 Tout le monde allait se faire enregistrer; et chacun en son lieu d'origine.
And every one went to be registered, each to the town to which he belonged.
4 Joseph (qui était de la maison et de la famille de David) partit, lui aussi, de Nazareth, ville de la Galilée, pour monter au pays de Judée et se rendre à la cité de David, appelée Bethléem,
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city if Nazareth, into Judea, to David’s town of Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David.
5 afin d'y être inscrit avec Marie, sa fiancée, qui était enceinte.
He went to be registered along with Mary, who was espoused to him, and was pregnant.
6 Or il advint, pendant qu'ils étaient en cet endroit, que le moment d'enfanter arriva;
But while they were there the days were fulfilled for her delivery.
7 et elle mit au monde son fils premier-né. Elle l'emmaillota et le coucha dans une crèche, parce qu'il n'y avait pas pour eux de place à l'hôtellerie.
And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 Il y avait, en ce même lieu, des bergers qui vivaient dans les champs et gardaient leurs troupeaux durant les veilles de la nuit.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night.
9 Un ange du Seigneur leur apparut, et une gloire du Seigneur resplendit autour d'eux; et ils furent saisis d'une grande crainte.
When suddenly an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round them; and they feared with a great fear. The angel said to them.
10 L'ange leur dit: «Ne vous effrayez point, car je vous apporte la Bonne Nouvelle d'une grande joie, qui sera pour tout le peuple:
"Have no fear, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be for all the people.
11 Aujourd'hui, en la cité de David, vous est né un Sauveur; c'est le Christ, le Seigneur.
"For unto you born this day in there is born in David’s town a Saviour, who is the Anointed Lord.
12 Et, pour vous, voici quel sera le signe: vous trouverez un petit enfant emmailloté et couché dans une crèche.»
"And this is a sign to you; You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling-clothes lying in a manger."
13 Soudain s'unirent à l'ange des multitudes appartenant à l'armée du ciel. Et tous louaient Dieu et disaient:
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly army praising God and saying,
14 «Gloire à Dieu au plus haut des cieux Et paix sur la terre aux hommes de bonne volonté»
"Glory to God in the highest, And in earth peace among men who please him"
15 Quand les anges s'éloignèrent, remontant au ciel, les bergers se dirent l'un à l'autre: «Allons jusqu'à Bethléem, voyons ce qui, est arrivé, ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître.»
Now when the angels had left them, and gone away to heaven, the shepherds said to one to another, "Let us go now even to Bethlehem, and see this saying which has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us."
16 Étant partis en toute hâte, ils trouvèrent Marie, Joseph et le petit enfant couché dans la crèche.
so they made haste, and came and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger.
17 Quand ils l'eurent vu, ils firent connaître ce qui leur avait été dit de cet enfant.
When they had seen, they made known about the words which had been spoken to them concerning the child.
18 Chacun, en écoutant les bergers, était émerveillé de ce qu'ils racontaient.
And all who heard it were astonished at the things which were told to them by the shepherds.
19 Quant à Marie, elle conservait toutes ces paroles et les repassait en son coeur.
But Mary treasured up all those words, Often pondering on on them in her heart.
20 Les bergers s'en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu de ce qu'ils avaient entendu et vu, toutes choses en parfait accord avec ce qui leur avait été dit.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying God and praising him for all those things that they had seen and heard, even as it was told to them.
21 Lorsque huit jours après, l'enfant fut circoncis, on lui donna le nom de Jésus, celui que l'ange lui avait donné avant qu'il eût été conçu dans le sein maternel.
When eight days had passed, and the time had come to circumcise him, he was called Jesus, the name given him by the angel before his conception in the womb.
22 Quand furent achevés les jours que la Loi de Moïse consacre à la purification, on porta l'enfant à Jérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur
And when the days for purification according to the law of Moses had passed, they took him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord,
23 (en exécution de ce qui est écrit dans sa Loi: «Tout enfant mâle premier-né sera dit consacré au Seigneur»
as it is written in the law of Moses, Every firstborn male shall be called holy to the Lord.
24 et pour offrir en sacrifice (selon la prescription de la Loi du Seigneur) «soit une couple de tourterelles, soit deux jeunes colombes.»
And they also offered a sacrifice as commanded in the Law of the Lord A pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.
25 Or, à Jérusalem, il y avait alors un homme qui se nommait Siméon. Cet homme était juste et pieux, il attendait la consolation d'Israël, et sur lui reposait l'Esprit saint;
Now there was in Jerusalem a man whose name was Simeon. He was righteous and devout, and was waiting for the consolation of Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him.
26 et cet Esprit saint lui avait révélé qu'il ne verrait point la mort avant qu'il eût vu l'Oint du Seigneur.
Now it has been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
27 Poussé par l'Esprit, il vint au Temple, et comme les parents de l'enfant Jésus l'y apportaient afin de se conformer, en ce qui le concernait, à l'usage légal,
And he came into the Temple, led by the Spirit. and when his parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law,
28 ce fut lui qui le reçut dans ses bras, et il bénit Dieu et dit:
he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,
29 «Maintenant, ô mon Maître, tu laisses ton serviteur s'en aller, En paix, suivant ta parole;
"Now lettest thou thy slave depart, O Master; according to thy word in peace,
30 Car mes yeux ont vu ton salut;
"Because my eyes had seen the salvation,
31 Salut que tu as préparé à la face de tous les peuples,
"Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples;
32 Lumière qui se révélera aux nations Et gloire de ton peuple d'Israël!
"A light for the unveiling of the Gentiles And the glory of thy people Israel."
33 Le père et la mère de l'enfant s'émerveillaient de ce que l'on disait de lui.
And while his father and mother were marveling at the words that were spoken concerning him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother.
34 Siméon les bénit aussi et dit à Marie, sa mère: «Sache que cet enfant est au monde pour être la chute et le relèvement de plusieurs en Israël et pour être un signal de contradiction,
"Behold this child is set for the falling and rising up of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against.
35 et ton âme, à toi-même, sera transpercée par un glaive; c'est ainsi que paraîtront au jour les sentiments de bien des coeurs.»
Yea, and a sword shall pierce through your own soul also, that the thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed."
36 Il y avait là également une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d'Aser. Elle était toute chargée d'années. Après avoir, depuis sa virginité, vécu sept ans avec son mari, elle était devenue veuve.
There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in age, having lived with her husband seven years, after her girlhood,
37 Agée alors de quatre-vingt-quatre ans, elle ne quittait point le Temple, servant nuit et jour le Seigneur dans les jeûnes et dans les prières,
and then being a widow even for fourscore and four years. She departed not from the temple, but worshiped with the fasting and prayer, night and day.
38 Elle aussi, survenant en cette même heure, rendit gloire à Dieu et parla de l'enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la rédemption de Jérusalem.
She came up at that very hour, and gave thanks to God, and spoke of the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
39 Quand furent accomplies toutes les prescriptions de la Loi du Seigneur, ils rentrèrent en Galilée, dans leur ville de Nazareth.
As soon as all that the law required had been done, they returned to Galilee to their own town, Nazareth.
40 L'enfant grandissait et se fortifiait; il était plein de sagesse et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.
And the child grew and became strong, becoming full of wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.
41 Chaque année, à la fête de Pâque, ses parents allaient à Jérusalem.
Now his parents were accustomed to go up to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.
42 Ils y montèrent pour la fête, comme de coutume, lorsqu'il eut atteint l'âge de douze ans.
And when he was twelve years old they went up, as was customary, at the time of the feast
43 Les jours consacrés à la solennité étant passés, ils s'en revinrent. Or l'enfant Jésus était resté à Jérusalem. Ses parents ne s'en aperçurent point.
After spending the full number of days they started home, but the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother did not know this,
44 Supposant qu'il était avec leurs compagnons de route, ils firent une journée de marche, le cherchant parmi ceux de leur parenté et parmi leurs connaissances.
but supposed that he was in the company, and went a days journey. Then they hunted for him among his kinsfolk and acquaintance;
45 Ne l'ayant point trouvé, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem, le cherchant toujours.
and when they did not find him they returned to Jerusalem, making anxious inquiry for him.
46 Ce fut au bout de trois jours qu'ils le trouvèrent, dans le Temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, les écoutant et les interrogeant.
On the third day they found him sitting in the Temple, among the Rabbis, both listening to them and asking questions.
47 Tous ceux qui l'entendaient étaient confondus de son intelligence et de ses réponses.
All that heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
48 A sa vue, ses parents furent très surpris, et sa mère lui dit: «Mon enfant, pourquoi as-tu agi de la sorte à notre égard? Voilà que ton père et moi nous te cherchions dans une grande angoisse.» —
When they saw him they were astonished, and his mother said to him "Child, why have you treated us so? Behold your father and I have been looking for you in anguish."
49 «Pourquoi me cherchiez? vous?» leur répondit-il. «Ne saviez-vous pas qu'il faut que je sois aux affaires de mon Père.»
He answered, "Why is it that you have been looking for me, did you not realize that I had to be in my Father’s house?"
50 Ses parents ne comprirent pas cette parole qu'il leur adressa.
But they did not understand the words that he spoke to them.
51 Descendant avec eux, il retourna à Nazareth; il leur était soumis; sa mère conservait toutes ces choses en son coeur;
Then he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and he was always obedient to them. But his mother kept treasuring up all these incidents in her hearts.
52 et Jésus progressait en sagesse, en stature et en grâce, devant Dieu et devant les hommes.
And Jesus was ever advancing in wisdom and in status and in favor with God and man.
