1 Ensuite Jésus passa de l'autre côté de la mer de Galilée (ou de Tibériade).
After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is [the sea] of Tiberias.
2 Il était suivi d'une foule immense, attirée par les miracles qu'il opérait sur les malades.
And a great multitude followed him, because they beheld the signs which he did on them that were sick.
3 Il gravit la montagne et y fit sa demeure ainsi que ses disciples.
And Jesus went up into the mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.
4 C'était aux approches de la fête juive de la Pâque.
Now the passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.
5 Ayant levé les yeux, Jésus aperçut l'immense foule qui venait à lui, et dit à Philippe: «Où achèterons-nous des pains pour leur donner à manger?»
Jesus therefore lifting up his eyes, and seeing that a great multitude cometh unto him, saith unto Philip, Whence are we to buy bread, that these may eat?
6 (Il lui parlait ainsi pour le mettre à l'épreuve; car, lui, il savait ce qu'il allait faire.)
And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.
7 «Pour que chacun en eût tant soit peu, lui répondit Philippe, deux cents deniers de pains seraient insuffisants.»
Philip answered him, Two hundred shillings’ worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little.
8 L'un des disciples (c'était. André, le, frère de Simon Pierre) dit à Jésus:
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,
9 «Il y a ici un petit garçon qui a cinq pains d'orge et deux poissons; mais pour une pareille foule qu'est-ce que cela?» —
There is a lad here, who hath five barley loaves, and two fishes: but what are these among so many?
10 «Faites asseoir ces gens», dit Jésus. En ce lieu-là, l'herbe était abondante. Les hommes s'assirent au nombre d'environ cinq mille.
Jesus said, Make the people sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
11 Jésus prit alors les pains, prononça l'action de grâces et les distribua à ceux qui étaient assis; il fit de même avec les poissons; ils en eurent autant qu'ils en voulaient.
Jesus therefore took the loaves; and having given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down; likewise also of the fishes as much as they would.
12 Quand tous furent rassasiés, il dit à ses disciples: «Ramassez, pour que rien ne se perde, les morceaux qui sont restés.»
And when they were filled, he saith unto his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces which remain over, that nothing be lost.
13 Ils les ramassèrent donc; et, avec ces morceaux des cinq pains d'orge, avec ce superflu du repas, ils remplirent douze paniers.
So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which remained over unto them that had eaten.
14 Tous ces gens, s'apercevant qu'il avait fait un miracle, disaient: «C'est vraiment là le prophète qui doit venir dans le monde.»
When therefore the people saw the sign which he did, they said, This is of a truth the prophet that cometh into the world.
15 Sachant alors qu'ils allaient l'enlever de force pour le faire roi, Jésus se retiras de nouveau, lui seul, dans la montagne.
Jesus therefore perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain himself alone.
16 Quand vint le soir, ses disciples redescendirent vers la mer;
And when evening came, his disciples went down unto the sea;
17 ils montèrent dans une barque et entreprirent la traversée dans la direction de Capharnaüm. Il faisait déjà nuit, Jésus ne les avait pas encore rejoints,
and they entered into a boat, and were going over the sea unto Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
18 et la mer s'enflait au souffle d'un grand vent.
And the sea was rising by reason of a great wind that blew.
19 Les disciples avaient parcouru environ vingt-cinq ou trente stades, quand ils aperçurent Jésus, marchant sur la mer et s'approchant de la barque. L'épouvante les saisit,
When therefore they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the boat: and they were afraid.
20 mais Jésus leur dit: «C'est moi, soyez sans crainte.»
But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
21 Ils voulurent alors le recevoir dans la barque, et tout aussitôt elle se trouva à terre, là où ils allaient.
They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat: and straightway the boat was at the land whither they were going.
22 Le lendemain, les multitudes, restées de l'autre côté de la mer, remarquèrent que Jésus n'était pas entré avec ses disciples dans la seule et unique barque qui fût là, et que ceux-ci étaient partis seuls.
On the morrow the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, save one, and that Jesus entered not with his disciples into the boat, but [that] his disciples went away alone
23 D'autres bateaux cependant arrivèrent de Tibériade près de l'endroit où, à la suite de l'action de grâces du Seigneur, tous avaient été nourris.
(howbeit there came boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks):
24 Les multitudes, qui finirent par se convaincre que, de même que ses disciples, Jésus n'était plus là, montèrent dans ces embarcations pour aller le chercher à Capharnaüm.
when the multitude therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they themselves got into the boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25 Et l'ayant en effet trouvé sur l'autre rive, elles lui demandèrent: «Rabbi, quand es-tu venu ici?»
And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
26 Jésus leur répondit par ces paroles: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous me cherchez non pas à cause des miracles que vous avez vus, mais à cause des pains dont vous avez été nourris et rassasiés.
Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled.
27 Travaillez à acquérir, non l'aliment qui périt, mais l'aliment qui subsiste en vie éternelle, et que le Fils de l'homme vous donnera, le Fils de l'homme que le Père, que Dieu a marqué de son sceau.» (aiōnios g166)
Work not for the food which perisheth, but for the food which abideth unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him the Father, [even] God, hath sealed. (aiōnios g166)
28 «Que devons-nous faire, lui dirent-ils, pour travailler aux oeuvres de Dieu?»
They said therefore unto him, What must we do, that we may work the works of God?
29 Jésus leur répondit par ces paroles: «L'oeuvre de Dieu est d'avoir foi en celui qu'Il a envoyé.»
Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
30 Alors ils lui demandèrent: «Quel est le miracle que tu fais afin que nous le voyions et que nous ayons foi en toi? Quelle est l'oeuvre que tu accomplis?
They said therefore unto him, What then doest thou for a sign, that we may see, and believe thee? what workest thou?
31 Nos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert comme cela est écrit: «Il leur donna à manger un pain qui vient du ciel.»
Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.
32 «Le pain qui vient du ciel, leur répondit Jésus, en vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, Moïse ne vous l'a pas donné; mais c'est mon Père qui vous donne le pain qui vient du ciel, le pain véritable.
Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, It was not Moses that gave you the bread out of heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread out of heaven.
33 Le pain de Dieu est, en effet, celui qui descend du ciel et qui donne la vie au monde.»
For the bread of God is that which cometh down out of heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34 «Seigneur, lui demandèrent-ils, donne-nous toujours ce pain-là.»
They said therefore unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 Jésus leur dit alors: «C'est moi qui suis le pain de la vie. Celui qui vient à moi n'aura jamais faim; celui qui croit en moi n'aura jamais soif.
Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
36 Mais je vous l'ai dit: Bien que vous m'ayez vu, vous ne croyez pas.»
But I said unto you, that ye have seen me, and yet believe not.
37 «A moi viendra tout ce que le Père me donne, et celui qui vient à moi je ne le repousserai point au dehors;
All that which the Father giveth me shall come unto me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
38 car je suis descendu du ciel, non pour faire ma volonté, mais la volonté de Celui qui m'a envoyé.
For I am come down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
39 Or, la volonté de Celui qui m'a envoyé, c'est que je ne perde rien de ce qu'il m'a donné, mais que je ressuscite tout au dernier jour.
And this is the will of him that sent me, that of all that which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.
40 Oui, la volonté de mon Père c'est que quiconque contemple le Fils et croit en lui ait la vie éternelle, et moi-même je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.» (aiōnios g166)
For this is the will of my Father, that every one that beholdeth the Son, and believeth on him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. (aiōnios g166)
41 Cependant les Juifs murmuraient contre cette parole de lui: «C'est moi qui suis le pain descendu du ciel.» —
The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, I am the bread which came down out of heaven.
42 «Est-ce que ce n'est pas là Jésus, le fils de Joseph, disaient-ils, Jésus dont nous connaissons le père et la mère? Comment cet homme peut-il dire: «je suis descendu du ciel?»
And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how doth he now say, I am come down out of heaven?
43 Jésus leur répondit par ces paroles: «Ne murmurez pas entre vous;
Jesus answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
44 nul ne peut venir à moi, sans être attiré par le Père qui m'a envoyé, et c'est moi qui ressusciterai celui-là au dernier jour.
No man can come to me, except the Father that sent me draw him: and I will raise him up in the last day.
45 Il est écrit dans les prophètes: «Ils seront tous enseignés de Dieu.» «Quiconque a entendu le Père et a appris, vient à moi.
It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard from the Father, and hath learned, cometh unto me.
46 Non que quelqu'un ait vu le Père, sauf celui qui est de la part de Dieu, lui, il a vu le Père.»
Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he that is from God, he hath seen the Father.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth hath eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
48 Je suis, moi, le pain de la vie.
I am the bread of life.
49 Vos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert; puis ils sont morts.
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
50 Voici le pain descendant du ciel, afin qu'on en mange et qu'on ne meure points.
This is the bread which cometh down out of heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
51 Je suis, moi, le pain vivant descendu du ciel. Si quelqu'un mange de ce pain, il vivra éternellement. Et le pain que je donnerai pour la vie du monde, c'est ma chair.» (aiōn g165)
I am the living bread which came down out of heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: yea and the bread which I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world. (aiōn g165)
52 Il y eut alors un débat entre les Juifs; ils disaient: «Comment cet homme peut-il nous donner à manger sa chair?»
The Jews therefore strove one with another, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
53 «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, reprit Jésus, si vous ne mangez la chair du Fils de l'homme, et si vous ne buvez son sang, vous n'avez pas la vie en vous-mêmes.
Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have not life in yourselves.
54 Qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang a la vie éternelle, et je le ressusciterai au dernier jour. (aiōnios g166)
He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. (aiōnios g166)
55 Car ma chair est une vraie nourriture, et mon sang est un vrai breuvage.
For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang demeure en moi et moi en lui.
He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me, and I in him.
57 De même que Celui qui est vivant, le Père, m'a envoyé et que, moi, je vis par le Père, de même aussi celui qui me mange vivra par moi.
As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he that eateth me, he also shall live because of me.
58 Tel est le pain descendu du ciel. Il n'en est pas de lui comme de la manne dont se nourrirent vos pères, lesquels sont morts ensuite. Celui qui mange ce pain-ci vivra éternellement.» (aiōn g165)
This is the bread which came down out of heaven: not as the fathers ate, and died; he that eateth this bread shall live for ever. (aiōn g165)
59 Telles furent les paroles de Jésus enseignant dans la synagogue à Capharnaüm.
These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
60 Après les avoir entendues, plusieurs de ses disciples dirent: «C'est dur à accepter ce qu'il dit là! Qui peut écouter ces paroles?»
Many therefore of his disciples, when they heard [this], said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?
61 Sachant en lui-même les murmures de ses disciples à ce sujet, Jésus leur dit: «Cela vous scandalise!
But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said unto them, Doth this cause you to stumble?
62 Et si vous voyiez le Fils de l'homme montant là où il était auparavant!
[What] then if ye should behold the Son of man ascending where he was before?
63 C'est l'Esprit qui vivifie; la chair ne sert de rien. Les paroles que je vous ai dites sont esprit et sont vie.
It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit, and are life.
64 Mais il en est parmi vous quelques-uns qui, ne croient pas!» (Dès le commencement, en effet, Jésus savait quels étaient ceux qui ne croyaient point, et quel était l'homme qui le livrerait.)
But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him.
65 «Voilà pourquoi, ajoutait-il, je vous ai dit que nul ne peut venir à moi, à moins que cela ne lui soit donné par le Père.»
And he said, For this cause have I said unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it be given unto him of the Father.
66 Ce fut alors qu'un grand nombre de ses disciples se retirèrent; ils ne furent plus de sa suite; ils ne marchaient plus avec lui.
Upon this many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
67 «Et vous, voulez-vous aussi vous en aller?» dit Jésus aux douze.
Jesus said therefore unto the twelve, Would ye also go away?
68 Simon Pierre lui répondit: «Seigneur, à qui irions-nous? tu as des paroles de vie éternelle, (aiōnios g166)
Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
69 et nous, nous avons cru et nous avons reconnu que tu es le Saint de Dieu.»
And we have believed and know that thou art the Holy One of God.
70 Jésus reprit: «N'est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis tous les douze? eh bien, l'un de vous est un démon!»
Jesus answered them, Did not I choose you the twelve, and one of you is a devil?
71 Il parlait de Judas, fils de Simon, l'Iskariôte. C'était lui, en effet, qui devait le livrer, lui, l'un des douze.
Now he spake of Judas [the son] of Simon Iscariot, for he it was that should betray him, [being] one of the twelve.
