1 Ayant su que les Pharisiens avaient ouï dire qu'il faisait plus de disciples et baptisait plus que Jean
Now when the Lord learned that the Pharisees heard he was making and baptizing more disciples than John
2 (quoiqu'il ne baptisât pas lui-même; c'étaient ses disciples qui baptisaient),
(although it was not Jesus himself who baptized them, but his disciples),
3 le Seigneur quitta la Judée et repartit pour la Galilée.
he left Judea and went away to Galilee.
4 Il lui fallait alors traverser la Samarie.
But he had to pass through Samaria.
5 Il arriva donc à une ville de ce pays nommé Sychar, près de la terre que Jacob avait donnée à son fils Joseph.
So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
6 Là se trouvait le puits de Jacob. Fatigué par le voyage, Jésus s'assit sur le puits; il était environ la sixième heure.
Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, wearied as he was from the journey, sat by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 Survint pour puiser de l'eau une femme de la Samarie.«Donne-moi à boire», lui dit Jésus.
When a woman from Samaria came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give me some water to drink.”
8 (Ses disciples étaient allés à la ville pour acheter des vivres.)
(For his disciples had gone into the city to buy food.)
9 La femme samaritaine lui répondit: Comment me demandes-tu à boire, toi, qui es Juif, à moi qui suis Samaritaine?» (Les Juifs, en effet, n'ont point de rapports avec les Samaritains.)
So the Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that yoʋ, a Jew, ask for water to drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
10 Jésus alors lui adressa ces paroles: «Si tu savais le don de Dieu, et quel est celui qui te dit: «Donne-moi à boire», tu lui ferais toi-même une telle demande, et il te donnerait de l'eau vive.»
Jesus answered her, “If yoʋ knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to yoʋ, ‘Give me some water to drink,’ yoʋ would have asked him, and he would have given yoʋ living water.”
11 «Seigneur, lui dit la femme, tu n'as rien pour puiser, et le puits est profond. D'où as-tu cette eau vive?
The woman said to him, “Sir, yoʋ do not even have a bucket to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then can yoʋ get this living water?
12 Es-tu plus grand que notre père Jacob, lequel nous a donné ce puits, et qui y a bu lui-même ainsi que ses fils et ses troupeaux?»
Are yoʋ greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock?”
13 Jésus lui répondit par ces paroles: «Quiconque boit de l'eau que voici aura soif de nouveau;
Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks this water will thirst again,
15 «Seigneur, reprit la femme, donne-moi cette eau-là, pour que je n'aie plus soif, et que je ne vienne plus ici pour puiser.»
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty again and have to come here to draw water.”
16 «Va appeler ton mari, lui dit Jésus, et reviens ici.»
Jesus said to her, “Go call yoʋr husband and come back here.”
17 La femme répondit ainsi: «Je n'ai pas de mari.» Jésus repartit: «Tu as raison de dire: «je n'ai pas de mari»;
The woman said in response, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “Yoʋ have rightly said, ‘I have no husband,’
18 en effet, tu as eu cinq maris et celui que tu as maintenant n'est pas ton mari; en cela, tu as dit vrai.»
for yoʋ have had five husbands, and the man yoʋ now have is not yoʋr husband; what yoʋ have said is true.”
19 «Seigneur, lui dit la femme, je vois que tu es prophète.
The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that yoʋ are a prophet.
20 Nos pères ont adoré sur cette montagne-ci; et vous dites, vous, qu'à Jérusalem est le lieu où il faut adorer.»
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21 «Femme, crois-moi, lui dit Jésus, il vient une heure où ni sur cette montagne-ci, ni à Jérusalem vous n'adorerez le Père.
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, an hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
22 Vous adorez, vous, ce que vous ne connaissez pas; nous, nous adorons ce que nous connaissons, parce que le salut vient des Juifs.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.
23 Mais il vient une heure, et elle est déjà venue, où les vrais adorateurs adoreront le Père en esprit et en vérité; car ce sont de tels adorateurs que demande le Père;
But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to worship him.
24 Dieu est esprit, et il faut que ceux qui l'adorent, l'adorent en esprit et en vérité.»
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
25 «Je sais, repartit la femme, qu'il va venir un Messie» — (ce mot signifie Christ). — «Quand il viendra, il nous apprendra tout.»
The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Jésus lui dit: «Je le suis, moi qui te parle.»
Jesus said to her, “I who speak to yoʋ am he.”
27 En ce moment, arrivèrent ses disciples; ils furent surpris de ce qu'il parlait à une femme. Aucun d'eux pourtant ne lui dit: «Que lui demandes-tu?» ou: «Pourquoi t'entretiens-tu avec elle?»
Just then his disciples came back, and they were amazed that he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, “What do yoʋ want?” or, “Why are yoʋ speaking with her?”
28 Quant à celle-ci, laissant là sa cruche, elle partit pour la ville et dit aux uns et aux autres:
Then the woman left her water jar, went into the town, and said to the people,
29 «Venez voir un homme qui m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait; ne serait-ce pas le Christ?»
“Come see a man who told me everything I have ever done. Could this be the Christ?”
30 Ils sortirent de la ville, et ils allaient vers Jésus.
So they left the town and began coming to him.
31 Dans l'intervalle, les disciples insistaient auprès de lui et lui disaient: «Rabbi, mange.»
In the meantime the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat.”
32 «J'ai pour me nourrir, leur répondit-il, un aliment que vous ne connaissez pas.»
But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”
33 Les disciples s'interrogeaient l'un l'autre: «Quelqu'un lui a-t-il apporté à manger?»
So the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?”
34 «Ma nourriture, reprit Jésus, c'est de faire la volonté de Celui qui m'a envoyé, c'est d'accomplir son oeuvre.
Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work.
35 Vous dites, n'est-ce pas, qu'il y a encore quatre mois avant la moisson. Eh bien! moi, je vous dis: levez les yeux et regardez ces campagnes, elles sont blanches pour la moisson.
Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and see that the fields are already ripe for harvest.
36 Déjà le moissonneur reçoit son salaire, et ramasse du fruit pour la vie éternelle, afin que le semeur se réjouisse en même temps que le moissonneur. (aiōnios g166)
He who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
37 Ici se vérifie cette parole: autre est le semeur, autre le moissonneur.
For in this the true saying is verified: ‘One sows and another reaps.’
38 Je vous ai envoyé moissonner là où vous n'aviez point travaillé. D'autres ont travaillé et vous, vous êtes entrés dans leur travails.»
I sent you to reap what you have not labored for; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
39 Beaucoup de Samaritains de cette ville crurent en lui d'après le témoignage porté par cette femme: «Il m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait.»
Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman's testimony: “He told me everything I have ever done.”
40 Aussi ces Samaritains vinrent-ils le prier de s'arrêter chez eux. Jésus y passa deux jours;
So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there for two days.
41 et un bien plus grand nombre encore crurent en lui, après avoir écouté sa parole.
And many more believed because of his word.
42 «Ce n'est plus sur ton récit que nous croyons, disaient-ils à la femme; car nous l'avons entendu nous-mêmes, et nous savons qu'il est vraiment le Sauveur du monde.»
So they said to the woman, “It is no longer because of yoʋr report that we believe, for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this is truly the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
43 Après ces deux jours, Jésus partit de là et s'en alla en Galilée.
After two days, he departed from there and went to Galilee.
44 Il est vrai qu'il avait lui-même déclaré que «dans sa propre patrie un prophète est sans honneur».
(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.)
45 Cependant quand il y arriva, les Galiléens l'accueillirent à cause de tout ce qu'ils lui avaient vu faire à Jérusalem pendant la fête à laquelle eux aussi avaient assisté.
When he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him because they had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also had gone to the feast.
46 Jésus se rendit aussi de nouveau à Cana de Galilée, où il avait changé l'eau en vin. Or, il y avait à Capharnaüm un officier royal dont le fils était malade.
Once more Jesus went to Cana of Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Now there was a certain royal official whose son was sick in Capernaum.
47 Cet officier ayant appris que Jésus, venant de Judée, était arrivé dans le pays, alla le trouver et le pria de descendre à Capharnaüm pour guérir son fils, qui était mourant.
When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for his son was about to die.
48 Jésus lui dit: «A moins d'avoir sous vos yeux des miracles et des prodiges vous ne croyez pas!» —
Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will certainly not believe.”
49 «Viens, Seigneur, reprit cet officier du roi, avant que mon enfant meure!» —
The royal official said to him, “Sir, come down before my boy dies.”
50 Jésus lui répondit: «Va, ton fils vit.» Cet homme crut à la parole que lui avait dite Jésus et s'en alla.
Jesus said to him, “Go; yoʋr son will live.” And the man believed what Jesus said to him and went on his way.
51 Il était déjà en route lorsqu'il rencontra ses serviteurs qui lui annoncèrent que son enfant était vivant.
As he was going back down to his house, his servants met him and told him, “Yoʋr son is alive.”
52 Il leur demanda à quelle heure l'enfant s'était senti mieux. «Hier, répondirent-ils, à la septième heure la fièvre l'a quitté.»
So he asked them the hour when he began to get better. They said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
53 Le père constata que c'était à cette heure même que Jésus lui avait dit: «Ton fils vit.» Dès lors il devint croyant, ainsi que tous ceux de sa maison.
Then the father realized that this was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Yoʋr son will live.” So he believed, along with his entire household.
54 C'était un nouveau miracle, le second que fit Jésus à son retour de Judée en Galilée.
This was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.
