Actes 5
1 Mais un homme nommé Ananias, d'accord avec sa femme Sapphira, vendit une propriété,
Now a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a piece of property,
2 mit de côté une partie du prix de vente, sa femme le sachant, et apportant le reste, le déposa aux pieds des apôtres.
and he kept back part of the sale money (his wife also knew it), and brought the other part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet.
3 Ananias, lui dit Pierre, pourquoi Satan s'est-il emparé de ton coeur, jusqu'à te faire mentir à l'Esprit saint, et te faire mettre de côté une partie du prix de ton champ?
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Si tu ne l'avais pas vendu, ne te serait-il pas resté? et, si tu le vendais, ne pouvais-tu pas à ton gré disposer de sa valeur? comment as-tu pu former un pareil projet dans ton coeur? ce n'est pas à des hommes que tu as menti, c'est à Dieu.»
While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own, and after it was sold, was it not in your control? How is it that you thought of this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.”
5 A l'ouïe de ces paroles, Ananias tomba et expira. Tous les auditeurs furent frappés d'épouvante;
Hearing these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last, and great fear came upon all who heard it.
6 cependant les plus jeunes, s'étant levés, l'arrangèrent pour l'ensevelir, puis ils l'emportèrent et l'enterrèrent.
The young men came forward and wrapped him up, and they carried him out and buried him.
7 Il s'était écoulé trois heures environ, lorsque sa femme entra, ne sachant pas ce qui était arrivé.
After about three hours, his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8 Pierre s'adressa à elle: «Dis-moi si c'est à ce prix-là que vous avez vendu votre champ?» Elle répondit: «C'est à ce prix-là.»
Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” She said, “Yes, for so much.”
9 Mais Pierre: «Eh quoi! vous vous êtes concertés pour tenter l'Esprit du Seigneur! Voici les pas de ceux qui ont enseveli ton mari s'approchent de cette porte; ils vont t'emporter!»
Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”
10 A l'instant même elle tomba à ses pieds et expira; les jeunes gens qui rentraient la trouvèrent morte, ils l'emportèrent et l'enterrèrent à côté de son mari.
She immediately fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in, they found her dead, and carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
11 L'Église tout entière et tous ceux qui apprirent ces faits furent frappés d'épouvante.
Great fear came upon the whole church, and upon all who heard these things.
12 Cependant il se faisait, dans le peuple, par les mains des apôtres, des miracles et des prodiges en grand nombre. Ceux-ci se tenaient d'habitude tous ensemble sous le portique de Salomon.
Many signs and wonders were taking place among the people through the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon's Porch.
13 Aucun des autres n'osait entrer en rapport avec eux, mais le peuple leur montrait une grande admiration;
But no one else had the courage to join them; however, they were held in high esteem by the people.
14 des croyants toujours plus nombreux, des hommes et des femmes en foule s'attachaient au Seigneur;
Still more believers were being added to the Lord, multitudes of men and women,
15 c'était au point qu'on portait les malades jusque dans les rues, qu'on les déposait sur de petits lits et sur des grabats afin que, Pierre venant à passer, son ombre au moins couvrît quelqu'un d'eux.
so that they even carried the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, so that as Peter came by, his shadow might fall on some of them.
16 Même des villes voisines, la foule accourait à Jérusalem, amenant des malades et des personnes tourmentées par des Esprits impurs: tous étaient guéris.
There also came together a great number of people from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
17 Cependant le grand-prêtre et tous ceux de son parti (le parti des Sadducéens) se mirent en mouvement. Poussés par la jalousie,
But the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees); and they were filled with jealousy
18 ils firent arrêter les apôtres et les jetèrent dans la prison publique.
and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in the public jail.
19 Mais un ange du Seigneur ouvrit, pendant la nuit, les portes de la prison, les fit sortir et leur dit:
Yet during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and led them out, and said,
20 «Allez vous montrer au Temple et annoncez au peuple toutes ces paroles de vie.»
“Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.”
21 A ces mots, ils entrèrent au Temple dès le point du jour et reprirent leur enseignement. Cependant le grand-prêtre et ses partisans convoquèrent le Sanhédrin et tout le sénat des Israélites, puis ils envoyèrent chercher les apôtres à la prison.
When they heard this, they entered into the temple about daybreak and taught. But the high priest came, and those who were with him, and called the council together, all the elders of the people of Israel, and sent to the jail to have the apostles brought.
22 Leurs agents s'y rendirent donc et ne les y trouvèrent pas; ils revinrent et rapportèrent le fait en ces termes:
But the officers that went did not find them in the prison, and they returned and reported,
23 «Nous avons trouvé la prison fermée avec grand soin et les sentinelles se tenant aux portes; nous avons ouvert et, dedans, nous n'avons trouvé personne.»
“We found the jail securely shut and the guards standing at the door, but when we had opened it, we found no one inside.”
24 A l'ouïe de ces paroles, le capitaine du Temple et les chefs des prêtres se demandèrent avec inquiétude où étaient les apôtres et ce que tout cela deviendrait.
Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed concerning them as to what would come of it.
25 Là-dessus, quelqu'un vint leur dire: «Les hommes que vous avez fait mettre en prison sont installés au Temple et enseignent le peuple.»
Then someone came and told them, “The men whom you put in the jail are standing in the temple and teaching the people.”
26 Le capitaine du Temple partit alors avec ses agents et les amena, mais sans employer la force, car ils avaient peur du peuple qui aurait pu les lapider.
So the captain went with the officers, and brought them back, but without violence, for they feared that the people might stone them.
27 Ils les amenèrent donc et les introduisirent dans le Sanhédrin.
When they had brought them, they set them before the council. The high priest interrogated them,
28 Le grand-prêtre les interrogea «Ne vous avons-nous pas expressément interdit, leur dit-il, d'enseigner en ce nom-là, et voilà que vous avez rempli Jérusalem de votre enseignement et que vous voulez faire retomber sur nous le sang de cet homme!»
saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and desire to bring this man's blood upon us.”
29 Mais Pierre et les apôtres répondirent par ces paroles: «Il faut obéir à Dieu plutôt qu'aux hommes; »
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
30 le Dieu de nos pères a ressuscité Jésus que vous, vous avez fait mourir en le pendant à une croix.
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.
31 Dieu, par sa droite, l'a élevé à la dignité de Chef et de Sauveur, pour donner à Israël la repentance et le pardon des péchés,
God exalted him to his right hand to be a prince and a savior, to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
32 et nous, nous sommes témoins de ces choses, ainsi que le saint Esprit donné par Dieu à ceux qui lui obéissent.»
We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
33 Ce langage les exaspéra; ils voulaient les faire mettre à mort;
When the council members heard this, they were furious and wanted to kill the apostles.
34 mais un des membres du Sanhédrin, un des Pharisiens, appelé Gamaliel, un légiste qui était estimé de tout le peuple, se leva et demanda qu'on fît sortir un instant les apôtres,
But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up and commanded the apostles to be taken outside for a little while.
35 puis il dit: «Israélites, prenez bien garde à ce que vous allez faire à ces hommes;
Then he said to them, “Men of Israel, pay close attention to what you propose to do with these people.
36 il y a quelque temps s'est levé Theudas qui prétendait aussi être quelque chose, et quatre cents hommes environ se joignirent à lui; il fut tué et tous ceux qui s'étaient ralliés à lui ont été mis en déroute et réduits à rien.
For some time ago, Theudas rose up claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who had been obeying him were scattered and came to nothing.
37 Après lui, à l'époque du recensement, s'est levé Judas le Galiléen, et il a attiré bien des gens à lui; celui-là aussi a péri, et tous ceux qu'il avait ralliés à lui ont été dispersés.
After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census and drew away some people after him. He also perished, and all who had been obeying him were scattered.
38 Eh bien, je vous dis ceci: Cessez vos poursuites et laissez aller ces hommes; car si cette entreprise ou cette oeuvre vient des hommes, elle tombera d'elle-même;
Now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or work is of men, it will be overthrown.
39 si, au contraire, elle vient de Dieu, vous ne pourrez l'arrêter et vous risquez de vous trouver avoir combattu contre Dieu.»
But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; you may even find that you are fighting against God.” So they were persuaded.
40 Ils se rangèrent à son avis et, ayant rappelé les apôtres, ils leur firent donner la bastonnade, puis leur défendirent de prêcher au nom de Jésus et les relâchèrent.
Then they called the apostles in and beat them and commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 Les apôtres se retirèrent de devant le Sanhédrin pleins de joie d'avoir été jugés dignes de subir des outrages pour le nom de Dieu;
They left the council rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name.
42 et tous les jours, dans le Temple et dans leur maison, ils ne cessaient d'enseigner et d'annoncer l'Évangile de Jésus-Christ.
Thereafter every day, in the temple and from house to house, they were continuously teaching and proclaiming Jesus as the Christ.
