Actes 16
1 Il arriva aussi à Derbé et à Lystres et y trouva un disciple appelé Timothée, fils d'une Juive devenue croyante, mais dont le père était Grec.
Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:
2 Les frères de Lystres et d'Iconium avaient bonne opinion de lui.
Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
3 Paul voulut l'emmener avec lui; il le prit donc et le circoncit, à cause des Juifs de l'endroit; car tout le monde savait que son père était Grec.
Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.
4 Dans toutes les villes où ils passaient, ils faisaient connaître et recommandaient d'observer les décisions prises par les apôtres et les Anciens de Jérusalem.
And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.
5 C'est ainsi que la foi des Églises s'affermissait et que leur nombre augmentait tous les jours.
And so were the Assemblies established in the faith, and increased in number daily.
6 Ils traversèrent la Phrygie et le pays des Galates (le saint Esprit les avait empêchés de prêcher la Parole en Asie).
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,
7 Arrivés du côté de la Mysie, ils se proposaient d'entrer en Bithynie, mais l'Esprit de Jésus ne le leur permit pas.
After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
8 Ils traversèrent alors rapidement la Mysie et descendirent à Troas;
And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.
9 Paul y eut une vision pendant la nuit; un Macédonien se présentait à lui et lui disait en le suppliant: «Passe en Macédoine et viens à notre aide.»
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.
10 Immédiatement après que cette vision lui eut apparu, nous cherchâmes à partir pour la Macédoine; nous comprenions que Dieu nous appelait à y prêcher l'Évangile.
And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.
11 Embarqués à Troas, nous marchâmes, vent arrière, sur l'île de Samothrace; le lendemain sur Néapolis
Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;
12 et, de là, nous nous rendîmes à Philippes, la première ville de la province de Macédoine et une colonie. Nous restâmes quelques jours dans cette ville.
And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.
13 Le jour du sabbat nous sortîmes des portes et nous nous rendîmes au bord de la rivière, où nous supposions qu'on se réunissait pour la Prière. Nous prîmes notre place, et nous nous entretînmes avec les femmes qui y étaient rassemblées.
And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.
14 Il y en avait une appelée Lydie, marchande d'étoffes de pourpre de Thyatire, une prosélyte, qui nous écouta. Le Seigneur lui toucha le coeur, de sorte qu'elle fit attention à ce que disait Paul.
And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
15 Quand elle eut été baptisée avec sa famille, elle nous invita en disant: «Si vous me croyez fidèle au Seigneur, entrez dans ma maison; demeurez-y; » et elle nous en pria instamment.
And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.
16 Il arriva, comme nous allions à la Prière, qu'une esclave, possédée d'un Esprit devin, se présenta à nous. Elle faisait gagner beaucoup d'argent à ses maîtres en annonçant l'avenir.
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
17 Elle se mit à nous suivre, Paul et nous. «Ces hommes-là, criait-elle, sont des serviteurs du Dieu suprême, ils vous annoncent le chemin du salut.»
The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
18 Elle fit cela plusieurs jours; enfin Paul, impatienté, se retourna et dit à l'Esprit: «Je t'ordonne, au nom de Jésus-Christ, de sortir de cette femme.» A l'instant même, il sortit.
And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
19 Cependant les maîtres de cette esclave, se voyant enlever le gain sur lequel ils comptaient, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, les traînèrent sur la place publique devant les magistrats
And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,
20 et les amenèrent aux préteurs. «Ces hommes-là, dirent-ils, troublent notre ville; ce sont des Juifs,
And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,
21 et ils prêchent des coutumes qu'il ne nous est permis ni d'accepter ni de suivre, puisque nous sommes Romains!»
And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.
22 La populace se souleva aussi contre eux, et les préteurs leur firent arracher leurs vêtements et les condamnèrent à recevoir la bastonnade.
And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.
23 On les frappa cruellement, puis on les jeta en prison, et il fut recommandé au geôlier de les garder en lieu sûr.
And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:
24 Celui-ci, pour obéir à cet ordre, les mit dans le cachot le plus reculé et engagea leurs pieds dans les ceps.
Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
25 Vers le milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas priaient, chantaient les louanges de Dieu, et les prisonniers les écoutaient,
And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
26 quand tout à coup se produisit un tremblement de terre si violent que la prison fut ébranlée jusque dans ses fondements; toutes les portes s'ouvrirent instantanément, et les liens de tous les prisonniers se relâchèrent.
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
27 Le geôlier, réveillé en sursaut et voyant ouvertes les portes de la prison, tira son épée et voulut se donner la mort, croyant que les prisonniers s'étaient échappés.
And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
28 Mais Paul lui parla: «Ne te fais point de mal, lui cria-t-il, nous sommes tous ici.»
But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
29 Alors le geôlier demanda de la lumière, entra précipitamment dans le cachot et se jeta tout tremblant aux pieds de Paul et de Silas;
Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
30 puis il les fit sortir et leur dit: «Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé?»
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 Ils lui répondirent: «Crois au Seigneur Jésus et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta maison.»
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32 Et ils lui annoncèrent la Parole de Dieu, à lui et à tous ceux de sa famille.
And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
33 Le geôlier les prenant avec lui à l'heure même, pendant la nuit, lava leurs plaies et se fit immédiatement baptiser, lui et tous les siens.
And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
34 Puis il les conduisit dans son logement et leur donna à manger; il était transporté de joie, et tous les siens l'étaient avec lui, d'avoir cru en Dieu.
And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
35 Le jour venu, les préteurs envoyèrent les licteurs dire au geôlier: «Relâche ces hommes!»
And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.
36 Le geôlier rapporta ces paroles à Paul: Les préteurs me font dire de vous relâcher; partez donc et allez en paix.»
And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.
37 Mais Paul répondit aux licteurs: «Ils nous ont fait frapper en public et sans jugement, nous, des citoyens romains, puis ils nous ont jetés en prison, et maintenant ils nous font sortir en cachette! Non, non, il faut qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes et nous raccompagnent!»
But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.
38 Les licteurs répétèrent ces paroles aux préteurs. Ceux-ci, apprenant qu'ils étaient romains, prirent peur;
And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.
39 ils vinrent les apaiser, les raccompagnèrent et les prièrent de quitter la ville.
And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.
40 Quant à eux, à leur sortie de prison, ils se rendirent chez Lydie, ils y virent les frères, leur adressèrent quelques exhortations et partirent.
And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.
