Ruth 1
1 Et à l'époque du régime des juges il survint une famine dans le pays. Et un homme de Bethléhem de Juda émigra pour établir son séjour en Moabie, lui, sa femme et ses deux fils.
And it came to pass, in the days when the Judges administered justice, that there was a famine in the land, —and so a certain man went his way, out of Bethlehem-judah to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
2 Or le nom de cet homme était Elimélech, et le nom de sa femme, Noomi, et le nom de ses deux fils, Mahlon et Chilion, Ephratites de Bethléhem de Juda. Et arrivés en Moabie, ils s'y fixèrent.
And, the name of the man, was Elimelech, and, the name of his wife, Naomi, and, the name of his two sons, Mahlon and Chilion—Ephrathites out of Bethlehem-judah, —so they came into the country of Moab, and remained there.
3 Cependant Elimélech, mari de Noomi, vint à mourir, et elle resta avec ses deux fils.
And Elimelech, husband of Naomi, died, —and she was left, she and her two sons.
4 Et ils épousèrent des femmes Moabites qui se nommaient, l'une, Orpa, l'autre Ruth, et ils demeurèrent là près de dix ans.
And they took them wives, of the women of Moab, the name of the one, was Orpah, and, the name of the other, Ruth, —and they dwelt there, about ten years.
5 Puis Mahlon et Chilion moururent tous deux aussi, et la femme survécut à ses deux fils et à son mari.
And, they also, both, died, Mahlon and Chilion, —so the woman was bereft of her two sons, and of her husband.
6 Alors elle se disposa avec ses deux brus à revenir de Moabie, parce qu'en Moabie elle avait appris que l'Éternel avait visité son peuple pour lui donner du pain.
Then she arose, she and her daughters-in-law, and returned out of the country of Moab, —for she had heard, in the country of Moab, how that Yahweh had visited his people, in giving unto them, bread.
7 Elle quitta donc le lieu où elle avait vécu, et ses deux brus avec elle, et elles se mirent en chemin pour retourner au pays de Juda.
So she went forth out of the dwelling-place where she had remained, and her two daughters-in-law with her, —and they went on the way, to return unto the land of Judah.
8 Alors Noomi dit à ses deux brus: Allez, retournez chacune dans la maison de sa mère! Que l'Éternel agisse envers vous avec amour, comme vous l'avez fait envers les décédés et envers moi!
Then said Naomi to her two daughters-in-law: Go return, each one to the house of her mother, —Yahweh deal with you in lovingkindness, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.
9 Que l'Éternel vous donne de trouver le repos chacune dans la maison d'un époux! Et elle les embrassa.
Yahweh grant you, that ye may find a place of rest, each one in the house of her husband, —And she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
10 Alors elles élevèrent leur voix et pleurèrent; et elles lui dirent: Non! nous irons avec toi rejoindre ton peuple.
And they said to her, —With thee, will we return, unto thy people.
11 Et Noomi dit: Retournez donc, mes filles! Pourquoi viendriez-vous avec moi? Ai-je encore dans mon sein des fils qui puissent devenir pour vous des époux?
Then said Naomi—Go back, my daughters! wherefore should ye journey with me? Have I, yet, sons in my womb, that they should become your, husbands?
12 Retournez, mes filles, allez! Car je suis trop vieille pour être à un mari. Quand je penserais: Il y a lieu pour moi d'espérer; quand cette nuit même je me trouverais mariée, bien plus, quand j'enfanterais des fils,
Go back, my daughters, go your way, for I am too old to have a husband, —If I should say, I have, hope, if I should, even to-night have a husband, and should, even bear sons,
13 voudriez-vous pour cela attendre qu'ils aient grandi, et vous séquestrer pour ne point vous marier? Oh! non! mes filles! j'ai plus d'amertumes que vous, car la main de l'Éternel a frappé sur moi.
would ye, therefore, tarry until they were grown? would ye, therefore, shut yourselves up from having husbands? Nay! my daughters, for it is far more bitter for me than for you, that forth hath gone against me, the hand of Yahweh.
14 Et elles élevèrent leur voix et se remirent à pleurer. Alors Orpa donna le baiser à sa belle-mère, mais Ruth s'attacha à elle.
And they lifted up their voice and wept, yet more. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in- law, but, Ruth, clave unto her.
15 Et [Noomi] dit: Voilà que ta belle-sœur est allée retrouver son peuple et son Dieu: suis ta belle-sœur et t'en retourne.
And she said—Lo! thy sister-in-law hath gone back, unto her people, and unto her gods, —go thou back, after thy sister-in-law.
16 Mais Ruth dit: Ne me presse pas de te quitter, de renoncer à te suivre! non! où tu iras, j'irai, où tu coucheras, je coucherai; ton peuple est mon peuple, et ton Dieu mon Dieu:
And Ruth said—Do not urge me to leave thee, to go back from following thee, —for, whither thou goest, I will go, and, where thou lodgest, I will lodge, thy people, shall be my people, and, thy God, my God;
17 où tu mourras, je veux mourir, et là trouver ma sépulture; si non, que l'Éternel m'inflige ceci et plus encore! c'est la mort qui mettra une barrière entre moi et toi.
where thou diest, I will die, and, there, will I be buried: So, let Yahweh do to me, and, so, let him add, if, death itself, part me and thee.
18 Et la voyant fermement résolue à l'accompagner, Noomi renonça à la contrarier.
And, when she saw that, bravely determined, was she to go with her, she ceased entreating her.
19 Elles firent donc le voyage à elles deux jusqu'à leur arrivée à Bethléhem. Et à leur entrée dans Bethléhem, toute la ville s'émut à leur occasion, et les femmes disaient: Est-ce Noomi?
So, they two, went their way, until they entered Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they entered Bethlehem, that all the city was moved concerning them, and the women said—Is this Naomi?
20 Et elle leur répondit: Ne m'appelez pas Noomi (ma suavité)! appelez-moi Mara (amertume), car le Tout-Puissant m'a affligée de bien des amertumes.
And she said unto them, Do not call me Naomi ["Sweet"], —call me Mara ["Bitter"], for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me:
21 Pourvue je suis partie et l'Éternel me ramène dénuée. Pourquoi m'appeler Noomi, quand l'Éternel se prononce contre moi et que le Tout-Puissant m'a rendue malheureuse?
I was full when I departed, but, empty, am I brought back of Yahweh, —wherefore should ye call me Naomi, when, Yahweh, hath given answer against me, and, the Almighty, hath crushed me?
22 Ainsi revint Noomi accompagnée de Ruth, la Moabite, sa bru, qui avait quitté les champs de Moab; or elles arrivaient à Bethléhem au début de la moisson des orges.
So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab, —and, they, entered Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
