Psaumes 44
1 Au maître chantre. Hymne des fils de Coré. O Dieu, nous avons ouï de nos oreilles, nos pères nous ont raconté les exploits que tu fis en leurs jours, aux jours d'autrefois.
To the chief Musician. Of the sons of Korah. An instruction. O God, with our ears have we heard, our fathers have told us, the work thou wroughtest in their days, in the days of old:
2 De ta main tu chassas les nations, pour les établir; tu détruisis les peuples, pour les multiplier.
Thou, by thy hand, didst dispossess the nations, but them thou didst plant; thou didst afflict the peoples, but them didst thou cause to spread out.
3 Car ce ne fut pas par leur épée qu'ils conquirent le pays, ni leur bras qui les rendit vainqueurs, mais ta droite et ton bras, et la lumière de ta face; car tu leur fus propice.
For not by their own sword did they take possession of the land, neither did their own arm save them; but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst delight in them.
4 O Dieu! tu es mon Roi! Ordonne la délivrance de Jacob!
Thou thyself art my king, O God: command deliverance for Jacob.
5 Avec toi nous battons nos ennemis, par ton nom nous terrassons nos adversaires
Through thee will we push down our adversaries; through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
6 Car dans mon arc je ne me confie point, ce n'est pas mon épée qui me délivre;
For I will not put confidence in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
7 mais c'est toi qui nous délivres de nos ennemis, et qui confonds ceux qui nous haïssent.
For thou hast saved us from our adversaries, and hast put them to shame that hate us.
8 De Dieu nous faisons gloire en tout temps, et nous louons éternellement ton nom. (Pause)
In God will we boast all the day, and we will praise thy name for ever. (Selah)
9 Cependant tu nous rejetas et nous couvris d'opprobre, et tu ne marchas plus avec nos armées;
But thou hast cast off, and put us to confusion, and dost not go forth with our armies;
10 tu nous fis reculer devant nos ennemis, et ceux qui nous haïssent, emportèrent des dépouilles;
Thou hast made us to turn back from the adversary, and they that hate us spoil for themselves;
11 tu nous livras comme la brebis que l'on mange, et parmi les nations tu nous disséminas;
Thou hast given us over like sheep [appointed] for meat, and hast scattered us among the nations;
12 tu vendis ton peuple à vil prix, et pour toi il n'eut pas une grande valeur;
Thou hast sold thy people for nought, and hast not increased [thy wealth] by their price;
13 tu nous exposas aux affronts de nos voisins, aux railleries et aux insultes de nos alentours;
Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a mockery and a derision for them that are round about us;
14 tu nous fis passer en proverbe chez les nations, exciter des hochements de tête parmi les peuples.
Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.
15 Toujours ma honte est devant mes yeux, et la confusion de ma face me couvre,
All the day my confusion is before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
16 à la voix de celui qui m'insulte et m'outrage, à l'aspect de l'ennemi et de l'homme hostile.
Because of the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and the avenger.
17 Tout cela nous est arrivé, et pourtant nous ne t'avions pas oublié, nous n'avions pas violé ton alliance,
All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely against thy covenant:
18 notre cœur ne s'était point retiré de toi, et nos pas n'avaient pas dévié de tes voies,
Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy path;
19 pour que tu nous écrases dans le pays des chacals, et que tu nous enveloppes d'une ombre de mort.
Though thou hast crushed us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.
20 Si nous avions oublié le nom de notre Dieu, et tendu nos mains vers un dieu étranger, est-ce que Dieu ne le pénétrerait pas,
If we had forgotten the name of our God, and stretched out our hands to a strange god,
21 lui qui connaît les secrets de nos cœurs?
Would not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
22 Mais non, pour toi nous sommes tués tous les jours, et regardés comme des brebis à égorger.
But for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are reckoned as sheep for slaughter.
23 Veille! pourquoi dors-tu, Seigneur? Réveille-toi! ne nous rejette pas à jamais!
Awake, why sleepest thou, Lord? arise, cast [us] not off for ever.
24 Pourquoi cacher ta face, oublier notre misère et notre oppression?
Wherefore hidest thou thy face, [and] forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
25 Car jusqu'à la poussière notre âme est abattue, et notre corps à la terre est attaché.
For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
26 Lève-toi! à notre secours! et sauve-nous pour l'amour de ta grâce.
Rise up for our help, and redeem us for thy loving-kindness' sake.
