Proverbes 6
1 Mon fils, si tu as cautionné ton prochain, si pour un autre tu as donné ta main,
My son, if thou hast become surety for another, If thou hast stricken hands for another,
2 si tu es engagé par les paroles de ta bouche, lié par les paroles de ta bouche;
If thou hast become ensnared by the words of thy mouth, If thou hast been caught by the words of thy mouth,
3 ah! fais ceci, mon fils, dégage-toi, car tu es tombé entre les mains de ton prochain! Va et te jette à ses pieds, et presse instamment ton prochain!
Do this now, my son, and rescue thyself, —Since thou hast fallen into the hands of thy neighbor, —Go, prostrate thyself, and be urgent with thy neighbor!
4 N'accorde ni sommeil à tes yeux, ni assoupissement à les paupières!
Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids;
5 Dégage-toi, comme la gazelle, de la main, comme l'oiseau, de la main de l'oiseleur!
Rescue thyself, as a roe from the hand, And as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Va vers la fourmi, paresseux! observe ses voies, et deviens sage!
Go to the ant, O sluggard! Consider her ways, and be wise!
7 Elle n'a ni prince, ni chef, ni souverain;
She hath no governor, Nor overseer, nor ruler;
8 cependant elle fait en été ses provisions, et durant la moisson recueille sa nourriture.
Yet she prepareth in the summer her food, She gathereth in the harvest her meat.
9 Jusques à quand, paresseux, seras-tu couché? quand te lèveras-tu secouant ton sommeil?
How long wilt thou lie in bed, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise from thy sleep?
10 « Un peu dormir, un peu sommeiller, un peu croiser les bras en étant couché! »
“A little sleep, —a little slumber, —A little folding of the hands to rest:”
11 Ainsi, la pauvreté fondra sur toi, comme un larron, et l'indigence, comme un homme portant le bouclier.
So shall thy poverty come upon thee like a robber, Yea, thy want, as an armed man!
12 Il est un indigne l'homme faux, dont la bouche s'écarte de la droiture,
A worthless wretch is the unrighteous man, Who walketh with a deceitful mouth;
13 qui cligne les yeux, parle du pied, et fait entendre du doigt.
Who winketh with his eyes, Speaketh with his feet, And teacheth with his fingers.
14 Les détours sont dans son cœur, il trame le mal en tout temps, et excite les rixes.
Fraud is in his heart; He deviseth mischief continually; He scattereth contentions.
15 Aussi sa ruine arrivera tout-à-coup, soudain il sera brisé, et sans remède.
Therefore shall calamity come upon him suddenly; In a moment shall he be destroyed, and that without remedy;
16 Il y a six choses que hait l'Éternel, et sept qui sont l'abomination de son âme:
These six things doth the LORD hate; Yea, seven are an abomination to him:
17 les yeux hautains, la langue menteuse, et les mains qui répandent le sang innocent;
Lofty eyes, a false tongue, And hands which shed innocent blood;
18 un cœur qui médite des projets pernicieux, des pieds empressés à courir au mal;
A heart that contriveth wicked devices; Feet that are swift in running to mischief,
19 celui qui, faux témoin, profère des mensonges, et celui qui excite des querelles entre les frères.
A false witness, that uttereth lies, And him that soweth discord among brethren.
20 Garde, mon fils, le précepte de ton père, et ne néglige pas les leçons de ta mère!
Keep, O my son! the commandment of thy father, And forsake not the precepts of thy mother!
21 Tiens-les toujours attachés à ton cœur, et liés à ton col!
Bind them continually to thy heart, Tie them around thy neck!
22 Si tu chemines, ils te garderont; si tu es couché, ils veilleront sur toi; à ton réveil ils t'entretiendront.
When thou goest forth, they shall guide thee; When thou sleepest, they shall watch over thee; And, when thou awakest, they shall talk with thee.
23 Car le précepte est un flambeau, et la leçon une lumière, et les remontrances de la sagesse sont la voie de la vie,
For the commandment is a lamp, and instruction a light; Yea, the rebukes of correction lead to life.
24 pour te préserver de la femme mauvaise, du doux parler de la langue étrangère.
They shall guard thee from the evil woman, From the smooth tongue of the unchaste woman.
25 Ne convoite point sa beauté dans ton cœur, et que ses paupières ne te captivent pas!
Desire not her beauty in thy heart, Nor let her catch thee with her eyelids;
26 Car pour une impudique on se réduit à un morceau de pain, mais la femme mariée tend un piège à la vie qui est chère.
For by a harlot a man is brought to a morsel of bread, And the adulteress layeth snares for the precious life.
27 Met-on du feu dans son sein, sans que les vêtements en soient embrasés?
Can a man take fire into his bosom, And his clothes not be burned?
28 Marche-t-on sur des charbons ardents, sans que les pieds en soient brûlés?
Can one walk upon burning coals, And his feet not be scorched?
29 De même pour celui qui va vers la femme de son prochain: qui la touchera, ne restera pas impuni.
So is it with him who goeth in to his neighbor's wife; Whoever toucheth her shall not go unpunished.
30 On ne néglige pas le voleur, quand il vole pour satisfaire son désir, parce qu'il a faim;
Men do not overlook a thief, Though he steal to satisfy his appetite, when he is hungry;
31 mais surpris, il restitue sept fois, et livre tout le bien de sa maison.
If found, he must repay sevenfold, And give up all the substance of his house.
32 Qui commet adultère avec une femme, n'a point la raison qui veut se perdre, le fait.
Whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding; He that doeth it destroyeth himself;
33 Il trouve des coups et de la honte, et son opprobre ne s'efface point.
Blows and dishonor shall he get, And his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 Car la jalousie est une fureur pour l'homme; il sera sans pitié au jour de la vengeance,
For jealousy is the fury of a man; He will not spare in the day of vengeance;
35 il n'aura égard à aucune rançon, et n'acceptera pas, quand tu multiplierais les dons.
And he will not pay regard to any ransom, Nor be content, though thou offer many gifts.
