1 Or les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad avaient des troupeaux nombreux, très considérables, et ils avaient sous les yeux le pays de Jaëzer et le pays de Galaad, et voici, ces lieux étaient des lieux propres aux troupeaux.

Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a great number of cattle: and when they saw that the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead was a good place for cattle;

2 Alors les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben s'adressèrent à Moïse et au Prêtre Eléazar et aux Princes de l'Assemblée et dirent:

The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the meeting,

3 Ataroth et Dibon et Jaëzer et Nimra et Hesbon et Eléalé et Sebam et Nébo et Bebon,

Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,

4 le pays que l'Éternel a vaincu à la tête de l'Assemblée d'Israël, est un pays propre aux troupeaux, et tes serviteurs ont des troupeaux.

The land which the Lord gave into the hands of the children of Israel, is a land for cattle, and your servants have cattle.

5 Et ils dirent: Si nous avons trouvé grâce à tes yeux, que ce pays soit donné en propriété à tes serviteurs, ne nous fais pas passer le Jourdain.

And they said, With your approval, let this land be given to your servants as their heritage: do not take us over Jordan.

6 Moïse répondit aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Ruben: Vos frères marcheront-ils au combat, et vous, resterez-vous ici?

And Moses said to the children of Gad and the children of Reuben, Are your brothers to go to the war, while you take your rest here?

7 Pourquoi voulez-vous ôter aux enfants d'Israël le désir de passer dans le pays que leur a donné l'Éternel?

Why would you take from the children of Israel the desire to go over into the land which the Lord has given them?

8 Ainsi firent vos pères, lorsque je les envoyai de Cadès-Barnéa explorer le pays: ils s'avancèrent jusqu'à la vallée d'Escol, et après avoir vu le pays,

So did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.

9 ils ôtèrent aux enfants d'Israël le désir d'entrer dans le pays que leur donnait l'Éternel.

For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they took from the children of Israel the desire to go into the land which the Lord had given them.

10 Alors en ce jour même la colère de l'Éternel s'alluma et Il prononça ce serment:

And at that time the Lord was moved to wrath, and made an oath, saying,

11 Ces hommes sortis de l'Egypte, âgés de vingt ans et plus, ne verront pas le sol que je promis par serment à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, car ils ne m'ont pas rendu une pleine obéissance,

Truly, not one of the men of twenty years old and over who came out of Egypt will see the land which I gave by oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; because they have not been true to me with all their heart;

12 excepté Caleb, fils de Jephunné, issu de Kenaz, et Josué, fils de Nun, qui ont rendu à l'Éternel une pleine obéissance.

But only Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua, the son of Nun: because they have been true to the Lord.

13 Ainsi la colère de l'Éternel s'alluma contre Israël et Il les fit errer quarante ans dans le désert jusqu'à l'extinction de toute la génération qui avait fait le mal aux yeux de l'Éternel.

Then the Lord was angry with Israel, and he made them wanderers in the waste land for forty years? till all that generation who had done evil in the eyes of the Lord was dead.

14 Et voilà que vous succédez à vos pères, à cette race de pécheurs, pour accroître encore la colère de l'Éternel contre Israël.

And now you have come to take the place of your fathers, another generation of sinners, increasing the wrath of the Lord against Israel.

15 Si vous lui faites défection, Il le laissera plus longtemps encore dans le désert, et vous entraînerez la perte de tout ce peuple.

For if you are turned away from him, he will send them wandering again in the waste land; and you will be the cause of the destruction of all this people.

16 Alors s'approchant de lui ils dirent: Nous construirons ici des parcs pour nos troupeaux et des villes pour nos enfants,

Then they came to him, and said, We will make safe places for our cattle here, and towns for our little ones;

17 mais nous-mêmes, de suite nous marcherons armés en tête des enfants d'Israël jusqu'à ce que nous les ayons introduits dans leur séjour; et nos enfants demeureront dans les villes fortifiées contre les habitants du pays.

But we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel till we have taken them to their place: but our little ones will be safe in the walled towns against the people of the land.

18 Nous ne rentrerons pas dans nos maisons que les enfants d'Israël n'aient pris chacun possession de son héritage.

We will not come back to our houses till every one of the children of Israel has come into his heritage.

19 Car nous ne voulons pas nous établir avec eux de l'autre côté du Jourdain et plus loin, puisque notre héritage se présente pour nous au delà du Jourdain vers le levant.

For we will not have our heritage with them on the other side of Jordan and forward; because our heritage has come to us on this side of Jordan to the east.

20 Là-dessus Moïse leur dit: Si vous le faites, si vous marchez en armes au combat sous les yeux de l'Éternel,

Then Moses said to them, If you will do this, arming yourselves to go before the Lord to the war,

21 et que toute votre milice passe le Jourdain sous les yeux de l'Éternel, jusqu'à ce qu'il ait chassé ses ennemis devant Lui, et que tout le pays ait été soumis par l'Éternel,

Every armed man of you going across Jordan before the Lord till he has overcome and sent in flight all who are against him,

22 et si vous revenez seulement alors, vous serez quittes envers l'Éternel et envers Israël et ce pays vous appartiendra en propre devant l'Éternel.

And the land is under the rule of the Lord: then after that you may come back, having done no wrong to the Lord and to Israel; and this land will be yours for your heritage before the Lord.

23 Mais si vous n'agissez pas ainsi, voici, vous péchez contre l'Éternel et vous ressentirez les effets de votre péché, qui vous atteindront.

But if you do not do this, then you are sinners against the Lord; and you may be certain that your sin will have its reward.

24 Bâtissez-vous des villes pour vos enfants et des parcs pour vos troupeaux, et ce que votre bouche a promis, tenez-le.

So get to work building your towns for your little ones, and safe places for your sheep; and do as you have said.

25 Alors les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben parlèrent à Moïse en ces termes: Tes serviteurs agiront ainsi que mon Seigneur l'ordonne.

And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben said to Moses, Your servants will do as my lord says.

26 Nos enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux, et tout notre bétail resteront ici dans les villes de Galaad,

Our little ones, our wives, and our flocks, and all our cattle, will be there in the towns of Gilead;

27 et tes serviteurs, toute leur milice guerrière, passeront sous les yeux de l'Éternel pour prendre part au combat, ainsi que mon Seigneur le dit.

But your servants will go over, every man armed for war, before the Lord to the fight, as my lord says.

28 Et Moïse donna pour eux ses ordres au Prêtre Eléazar, et à Josué, fils de Nun, et aux patriarches des Tribus des enfants d'Israël.

So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua, the son of Nun, and to the heads of families of the tribes of the children of Israel.

29 Et Moïse leur dit: Si les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben passent avec vous le Jourdain, tous équipés pour le combat, devant l'Éternel, alors, une fois le pays mis sous vos pieds devant vous, vous leur donnerez le pays de Galaad en propriété.

And Moses said to them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben go with you over Jordan, every man armed for the fight before the Lord, and all the land is given into your hands, then let them have the land of Gilead for a heritage:

30 Mais s'ils ne marchent pas en armes avec vous, qu'ils obtiennent leur lot au milieu de vous dans le pays de Canaan.

But if they do not go over with you armed, they will have to take their heritage with you in the land of Canaan.

31 Alors les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben répondirent et dirent: Ce que l'Éternel a dit à tes serviteurs, nous le ferons.

Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben said, As the Lord has said to your servants, so will we do.

32 Nous entrerons en armes sous les yeux de l'Éternel au pays de Canaan, mais que l'on nous mette en possession de notre lot de ce côté du Jourdain.

We will go over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, and you will give us our heritage on this side of Jordan.

33 Ainsi Moïse donna aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Ruben, et à la demi-Tribu de Manassé, fils de Joseph, le royaume de Sihon, Roi des Amoréens, et le royaume de Og, Roi de Basan, ce pays avec ses villes, et les territoires environnants des villes du pays.

So Moses gave to them, even to the children of Gad and the children of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites and Og, king of Bashan, all the land with its towns and the country round them.

34 Et les fils de Gad bâtirent Dibon et Ataroth et Aroër,

And the children of Gad were the builders of Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer;

35 et Atrothsophan et Jaëzer et Jogbeha

And Atroth-shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah;

36 et Beth-Nimra et Beth-Haran, villes fortes et parcs de moutons.

And Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran: walled towns and shut-in places for sheep.

37 Et les fils de Ruben rebâtirent Hesbon et Eléalé et Kiriathaïm

And the children of Reuben were the builders of Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim;

38 et Nébo et Bahal-Meon, dont les noms furent changés, et Sibma; et ils donnèrent des noms aux villes qu'ils bâtirent.

And Nebo and Baal-meon, (their names being changed, ) and Sibmah: and they gave other names to the towns they made.

39 Et les fils de Machir, fils de Manassé, marchèrent contre Galaad et s'en emparèrent et chassèrent les Amoréens qui y étaient établis.

And the children of Machir, the son of Manasseh, went to Gilead and took it, driving out the Amorites who were living there.

40 Et Moïse donna Galaad à Machir, fils de Manassé, qui s'y établit.

And Moses gave Gilead to Machir, the son of Manasseh; and he made it his living-place.

41 Et Jaïr, fils de Manassé, se mit en marche, et en conquit les bourgs qu'il appela Bourgs de Jaïr.

And Jair, the son of Manasseh, went and took the towns of Gilead, naming them Havvoth-Jair.

42 Et Nobah se mit en marche et conquit Kenath et ses dépendances et il l'appela Nobah de son nom.

And Nobah went and took Kenath and its small towns, naming it Nobah, after himself.
