1 Et étant partis, les fils d'Israël vinrent camper dans les plaines de Moab au delà du Jourdain, près de Jéricho.
The Israelites moved on and camped on the plains of Moab east of the Jordan, opposite Jericho.
2 Et Balak, fils de Tsippor, vit tout ce qu'Israël avait fait aux Amoréens.
Balak, son of Zippor, had seen all that the Israelites had done to the Amorites.
3 Et Moab conçut un grand effroi en face de ce peuple, car il était fort nombreux, et Moab eut peur à la vue des enfants d'Israël.
The Moabites were terrified of the Israelites because there were so many of them. The Moabites dreaded the arrival of the Israelites
4 Et Moab dit aux Anciens de Madian: Cette troupe va tout dévorer autour de nous, comme le bœuf broute la verdure de la campagne. Or Balak, fils de Tsippor, était alors Roi de Moab.
and told the leaders of Midian, “This horde will eat up everything we have, just like an ox eats up grass in the field!” (Balak son of Zippor, was king of Moab at that time.)
5 Alors Balak envoya des messagers à Balaam, fils de Behor, à Pethor, sur le Fleuve (l'Euphrate) dans le pays des fils de son peuple, pour le mander en lui disant: Voici, un peuple est sorti de l'Égypte; voilà qu'il couvre la face entière du pays, et il est campé en face de moi:
He sent messengers to call Balaam, son of Beor, who lived in Pethor near the Euphrates River in his own country. “Listen, a group of people has arrived here who came from Egypt,” Balak said in his message to Balaam. “There are hordes of them and they present a real threat to me.
6 maintenant viens donc! maudis pour moi ce peuple-là, car il est plus fort que moi; peut-être ainsi l'emporterai-je; nous le battrons et je le chasserai du pays; car je sais que celui que tu bénis est béni, et que celui que tu maudis est maudit.
Please come immediately and curse these people for me, because they are stronger than me. Maybe then I'll be able to attack them and drive them out of my country because I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.”
7 Les Anciens de Moab et les Anciens de Madian partirent, ayant en main le salaire pour le devin. Et ils arrivèrent auprès de Balaam et lui rapportèrent les paroles de Balak.
The Moabite and Midianite leaders departed, taking payment for the fortune-telling with them. When they arrived they gave Balaam the message from Balak.
8 Et il leur dit: Passez ici la nuit, et je vous rendrai réponse d'après ce que l'Éternel m'aura dit. Et les princes de Moab restèrent chez Balaam.
“Stay the night and I'll let you know the answer the Lord gives me,” Balaam told them. So the Moabite leaders stayed there with Balaam.
9 Puis Dieu vint à Balaam et dit: Qui sont ces hommes que tu as chez toi?
God came to Balaam and asked him, “Who are these men staying with you?”
10 Et Balaam dit à Dieu: Balak, fils de Tsippor, Roi de Moab, m'a fait dire:
Balaam told God, “Balak, son of Zippor, the king of Moab, sent me this message:
11 Voici, un peuple sorti de l'Egypte couvre la face du pays: viens donc, maudis pour moi ce peuple; peut-être ainsi serai-je à même de le combattre et de le chasser.
‘Listen, a group of people has arrived here who came from Egypt. There are hordes of them. Please come immediately and curse these people for me. Maybe then I'll be able to fight them and drive them out of my country.’”
12 Et Dieu dit à Balaam: Ne va pas avec eux; tu n'as point à maudire ce peuple, car il est béni.
But God told Balaam, “You are not to go back with them. You must not curse this people, for they are blessed.”
13 Et Balaam se leva le matin et dit aux princes de Balak: Allez-vous-en dans votre pays, car l'Éternel a refusé de me permettre de vous accompagner.
In the morning Balaam got up and said to Balak's messengers, “Go back to where you came from because the Lord has refused to allow me to go with you.”
14 Alors les princes de Moab se levèrent et revinrent auprès de Balak à qui ils dirent: Balaam a refusé de nous accompagner.
The Moabite leaders left. They returned to Balak, and told him, “Balaam refused to come back with us.”
15 Mais Balak délégua de nouveau des princes en plus grand nombre et plus considérables que les premiers.
Then Balak sent even more leaders who were more prestigious than before.
16 Et ils vinrent auprès de Balaam et lui dirent: Ainsi parle Balak, fils de Tsippor: Je t'en prie, ne te laisse point arrêter de te rendre auprès de moi.
When they arrived they told Balaam, “This is what Balak son of Zippor says: ‘Please don't let anything stop you from coming to see me,
17 Car je t'accorderai beaucoup d'honneurs, et je ferai tout ce que tu me diras: viens donc, et maudis pour moi ce peuple-là.
because I will pay you a great deal and follow all the advice you give me. Please come and curse these people for me!’”
18 Et Balaam répondit et dit aux serviteurs de Balak: Quand Balak me donnerait sa maison pleine d'argent et d'or, je ne pourrais contrevenir à l'ordre de l'Éternel, mon Dieu, en faisant peu ou beaucoup.
But Balaam told Balak's officials, “Even if Balak gave me his whole palace full of silver and gold, I couldn't disobey the command of the Lord my God in any way.
19 Mais je vous prie aussi de rester ici cette nuit et je verrai ce que l'Éternel me dira cette seconde fois.
Now you should also stay the night so I can see if the Lord has anything else to tell me.”
20 Et pendant la nuit Dieu vint à Balaam et lui dit: Si ces hommes sont venus pour te mander, lève-toi et accompagne-les, mais tu ne feras que ce que je te dirai.
God came to Balaam during the night and told him, “Since these men have come for you, get up and go with them. But only do what I tell you.”
21 Balaam se leva donc le matin et mit le harnais à son ânesse, et s'achemina avec les princes de Moab.
In the morning Balaam got up, put a saddle on his donkey, and left with the Moabite leaders.
22 Mais la colère de Dieu s'alluma parce qu'il était parti, et l'Ange de l'Éternel se posta sur le chemin pour s'opposer à lui. Or il était monté sur son ânesse ayant avec lui ses deux valets.
God's got angry because Balaam had decided to go. The angel of the Lord came and stood in the road to confront him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and he was accompanied by his two servants.
23 Et l'ânesse aperçut l'Ange de l'Éternel posté sur le chemin, et son épée nue dans sa main, et l'ânesse s'écarta de la route et entra dans les champs; et Balaam frappa l'ânesse pour la ramener dans la route.
The donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road holding a drawn sword, so it turned from the road and went into a field. So Balaam beat it to make it go back to the road.
24 Alors l'Ange vint se placer sur le sentier des vignes, où il y avait mur d'un côté et mur de l'autre.
Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow part of the road that passed between two vineyards, with walls on both sides.
25 Et l'ânesse voyant l'Ange de l'Éternel se serra contre la muraille et serra le pied de Balaam contre la muraille et il la frappa de nouveau.
The donkey saw the angel of the Lord and tried to get past. It pushed up against the wall and crushed Balaam's foot against it. So he beat it again.
26 Et l'Ange de l'Éternel passa encore en avant et se plaça dans un lieu étroit où il n'y avait aucune voie pour s'écarter ni à droite ni à gauche.
Then the angel of the Lord went ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to get past, either on the right or the left.
27 Et l'ânesse voyant l'Ange de l'Éternel s'abattit sous Balaam; et Balaam s'enflamma de colère et frappa l'ânesse avec son bâton.
The donkey saw the angel of the Lord and lay down under Balaam. He got angry and beat it with his walking stick.
28 Alors l'Éternel ouvrit la bouche de l'ânesse, et elle dit à Balaam: Que t'ai-je fait pour m'avoir battue déjà trois fois?
The Lord gave the donkey the ability to speak and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you for you to beat me three times?”
29 Et Balaam dit à l'ânesse: C'est que tu as été rétive pour moi; que n'ai-je une épée dans ma main? je t'aurais déjà tuée.
“You made me look stupid!” Balaam told the donkey. “If I was holding a sword, I'd kill you now!”
30 Et l'ânesse dit à Balaam: Ne suis-je pas ton ânesse que, depuis que tu es, tu as montée jusqu'aujourd'hui? Ai-je l'habitude de te faire pareille chose? Et il dit: Non!
But the donkey asked Balaam, “Aren't I the donkey you've ridden all your life right up to today? Have I ever treated you this way before?” “No,” he admitted.
31 Alors l'Éternel dessilla les yeux de Balaam et il aperçut l'Ange de l'Éternel posté sur le chemin, son épée nue à la main, et il s'inclina et se prosterna la face contre terre.
Then the Lord gave Balaam the ability to see the angel of the Lord standing in the road holding a drawn sword. Balaam bowed low and fell facedown on the ground.
32 Et l'Ange de l'Éternel lui dit: Pourquoi as-tu frappé ton ânesse déjà trois fois? Voici, je suis sorti pour m'opposer, parce que je te vois suivre une voie périlleuse. Et l'ânesse m'a vu et à mon aspect s'est écartée déjà trois fois.
The angel of the Lord asked him, “Why did you beat your donkey three times? Listen, I have come to confront you because you're being obstinate.
33 Si elle ne se fût pas écartée de moi, certes je t'aurais déjà tué, et à elle j'aurais laissé la vie.
The donkey saw me and avoided me three times. If it had not avoided me, by now I definitely would have killed you and allowed the donkey to live.”
34 Et Balaam dit à l'Ange de l'Éternel: J'ai péché, car j'ignorais que tu fusses posté contre moi sur le chemin, et maintenant, si tu me désapprouves, je m'en retournerai.
“I have sinned because I did not realize that you were standing in the road to confront me,” Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “So if this isn't what you want, I'll go back home.”
35 Et l'Ange de l'Éternel dit à Balaam: Va avec ces hommes; mais ne dis pas autre chose que les paroles que je te dirai. Et Balaam chemina avec les princes de Balak.
The angel of the Lord told Balaam, “No, you can go with the men, but only say what I tell you.” So Balaam continued on with Balak's officials.
36 Et Balak apprenant que Balaam arrivait, vint au-devant de lui jusqu'à la ville de Moab, à la limite de l'Arnon qui est l'extrême frontière.
When Balak found out that Balaam was on his way, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the border at the Arnon River, the farthest point of his territory.
37 Et Balak dit à Balaam: N'ai-je pas envoyé auprès de toi pour te mander? Pourquoi ne t'es-tu pas rendu auprès de moi? vraiment, ne suis-je pas en état de te donner des honneurs?
He said to Balaam, “Didn't you think my call for you to come was urgent? Why didn't you come to me straight away? Did you think I couldn't pay you enough?”
38 Et Balaam dit à Balak: Voici, je suis arrivé auprès de toi; maintenant est-ce que je puis tenir tout discours? je rendrai les paroles que l'Éternel me mettra dans la bouche.
“Look, I'm here with you now, aren't I?” Balaam replied. “But do you think I can just say anything? I can only speak the words that God gives me to say.”
39 Et Balaam accompagna Balak et ils allèrent à Kiriath-Chutsoth.
So Balaam went with Balak and they arrived at Kiriath-huzoth.
40 Et Balak fit un sacrifice de gros et de menu bétail, et en envoya à Balaam et aux princes qui l'accompagnaient.
Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and he shared with meat with Balaam and the leaders who were with him.
41 Et le matin Balak prit Balaam et le conduisit sur les hauteurs de Bahal d'où il pût découvrir l'extrémité du peuple.
The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth-baal. From there he could see the extent of the Israelite camp.
