Luc 3
1 Or, la quinzième année du règne de l'empereur Tibère, Ponce Pilate étant gouverneur de Judée, et Hérode le tétraque de Galilée, tandis que Philippe son frère était tétraque de l'Iturée et de la Trachonite et Lysanias, tétrarque de l'Abilène,
NOW in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene:
2 sous le pontificat d'Annas et de Caïaphas, la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Jean fils de Zacharie dans le désert,
when Annas and Caiaphas were high-priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness;
3 et il parcourut toute la contrée voisine du Jourdain en prêchant un baptême de repentance pour la rémission des péchés,
and he came into all the country on the confines of Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
4 comme il est écrit dans le livre des discours d'Ésaïe le prophète: « Voix d'un crieur dans le désert: Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, redressez Ses sentiers.
as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths strait:
5 Toute vallée sera comblée, et toute montagne et toute colline seront abaissées; et ce qui est tortueux sera redressé, et les chemins raboteux deviendront unis.
every valley shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be levelled, and the crooked ways made strait, and the rough roads smooth:
6 Et toute chair verra le salut de Dieu. »
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
7 Il disait donc à la foule qui venait se faire baptiser par lui: « Engeance de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère à venir?
He said, therefore, to the multitudes who came out to be baptised by him, Ye broods of vipers, who hath warned you to fly from the approaching wrath?
8 Produisez donc des fruits dignes de la repentance, et ne vous mettez pas à dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons Abraham pour père! Car je vous déclare que Dieu peut de ces pierres-ci susciter des enfants à Abraham.
Produce then fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say in yourselves, We have a father, even Abraham; for I say unto you, That God is able out of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
9 Mais déjà la hache même est mise à la racine des arbres; tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bon fruit doit être coupé et jeté au feu. »
But now is the ax laid even to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that produceth not good fruit, is cut down and cast into the fire.
10 Et la foule lui demandait: « Qu'avons-nous donc à faire? »
And the multitudes asked him, saying, What then shall we do?
11 Mais il leur répliquait: « Que celui qui a deux tuniques partage avec celui qui n'en a point, et que celui qui a des vivres fasse de même. »
And he answering said to them, He that hath two coats, let him give to him that hath none; and he that hath provisions, let him do in like manner.
12 Or il vint aussi des publicains pour se faire baptiser, et ils lui dirent: « Maître, qu'avons-nous à faire? »
Then came also the farmers of the taxes to be baptised, and they said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
13 Mais il leur dit: « N'exigez rien au delà de ce qui vous est prescrit. »
He said unto them, Exact nothing more than is appointed for you.
14 Des soldats aussi lui demandaient: « Et nous de notre côté que ferons-nous? » Et il leur dit: « N'opprimez ni ne vexez personne, et contentez-vous de votre paie. »
And the military men also asked him, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Extort nothing by force; nor turn informers; and be content with your pay.
15 Mais comme le peuple était dans l'attente, et que tous se demandaient en leurs cœurs relativement à Jean, s'il ne serait point lui-même le Christ,
Now when the people were in expectation, and many reasoned in their hearts respecting John, whether he were the Messiah,
16 Jean s'adressant à tous leur dit: « Pour moi, je vous baptise d'eau; mais il vient, celui qui est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de délier la courroie de ses sandales; c'est lui qui vous baptisera d'Esprit saint et de feu.
John addressed himself to them all, saying, I indeed baptise you with water; but one mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie: he shall baptise you with the Holy Ghost and with fire;
17 Il tient son van dans sa main pour nettoyer son aire et serrer le blé dans son grenier; mais il brûlera la paille dans un feu inextinguible. »
whose winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor, and collect the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18 Tandis donc qu'il évangélisait le peuple, en lui adressant encore plusieurs autres exhortations,
Thus in many and various discourses exhorting them, he preached the glad tidings of the gospel to the people.
19 Hérode le tétrarque, réprimandé par lui à propos d'Hérodiade la femme de son frère et à propos de toutes les mauvaises actions que lui, Hérode, avait faites,
Now Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him, on account of Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the other wicked actions which he had done,
20 ajouta encore celle-ci à toutes les autres: il fit mettre Jean en prison.
added this also to all the rest, and shut up John in prison.
21 Or il advint, pendant que tout le peuple se faisait baptiser, qu'après que Jésus eut aussi été baptisé, et tandis qu'il priait, le ciel s'ouvrit,
Now it came to pass, at the time when John was baptising all the people, that Jesus also was baptised, and as he prayed, the heaven was opened,
22 et que l'Esprit saint descendit sur lui sous forme corporelle, comme une colombe, et qu'une voix vint du ciel: « Tu es Mon Fils bien-aimé, en toi J'ai pris plaisir. »
and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily form, like a dove, upon him, and a voice came from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased.
23 Et Jésus lui-même avait, lorsqu'il commença, environ trente ans, étant fils, comme on le pensait, de Joseph fils d'Héli,
And Jesus himself was about thirty years of age when he began his ministry, being (as was supposed the son of Joseph) of Heli,
