Juges 9
1 Et Abimélech, fils de Jérubbaal, se rendit à Sichem auprès des frères de sa mère; et il leur parla ainsi qu'à toute la race de la maison du père de sa mère, en ces termes:
Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,
2 Portez donc ces paroles aux oreilles de tous les citoyens de Sichem: Lequel vaut le mieux pour vous ou que soixante-dix hommes, tous fils de Jérubbaal, vous gouvernent, ou bien qu'un seul homme vous gouverne? rappelez-vous que je suis votre sang, votre chair même!
“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”
3 Et les frères de sa mère portèrent pour lui toutes ces paroles aux oreilles de tous les citoyens de Sichem, et leur cœur inclina du côté d'Abimélech; car, disaient-ils, il est notre frère.
His mother’s brothers spoke of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words. Their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, “He is our brother.”
4 Et ils tirèrent du temple de Baal-Berith soixante-dix sicles d'argent pour les lui donner; et avec cela Abimélech soudoya des vauriens et des hommes audacieux qui s'attachèrent à lui.
They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal Berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and reckless fellows who followed him.
5 Et il vint dans la maison de son père à Ophra, et il égorgea ses frères, fils de Jérubbaal, soixante-dix hommes, sur une même pierre; cependant Jotham, fils cadet de Jérubbaal, survécut, parce qu'il s'était caché.
He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone; but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.
6 Et tous les citoyens de Sichem et tous les habitants de la citadelle s'étant assemblés, vinrent et établirent Abimélech roi près du chêne du corps-de-garde vers Sichem.
All the men of Shechem assembled themselves together with all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.
7 Et Jotham en ayant été informé alla se placer au haut du mont Garizim, et élevant la voix il les harangua et leur dit: « Ecoutez-moi, citoyens de Sichem, afin que Dieu vous écoute!
When they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and lifted up his voice, cried out, and said to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.
8 Les arbres se réunirent pour oindre un roi qui régnât sur eux. Et ils dirent à l'olivier: Règne sur nous!
The trees set out to anoint a king over themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’
9 Et l'olivier leur dit: Renoncerais-je à mon huile qui m'attire l'estime des dieux et des hommes, pour aller me balancer au-dessus des arbres?
“But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I stop producing my oil, with which they honor God and man by me, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’
10 Alors les arbres dirent au figuier: Eh bien! toi, règne sur nous! Et le figuier leur dit:
“The trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and reign over us.’
11 Renoncerais-je à ma douceur et à mon fruit exquis pour aller me balancer au-dessus des arbres?
“But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’
12 Alors les arbres dirent à la vigne: Eh bien! toi, règne sur nous!
“The trees said to the vine, ‘Come and reign over us.’
13 Et la vigne leur dit: Renoncerais-je à ma liqueur qui réjouit les dieux et les hommes, pour aller me balancer au-dessus des arbres?
“The vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’
14 Alors tous les arbres dirent au buisson d'épines: Eh bien! toi, règne sur nous!
“Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come and reign over us.’
15 Et le buisson d'épines dit aux arbres: Si en vérité vous voulez m'oindre pour m'établir roi sur vous, venez et abritez-vous sous mon ombrage; sinon du buisson d'épines sortira un feu qui dévorera les cèdres du Liban.
“The bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’
16 Ainsi donc, si c'est avec fidélité et droiture que vous avez agi en faisant Abimélech roi, et si vous vous êtes bien conduits envers Jérubbaal et sa maison, et si vous l'avez traité en raison de ce qu'il a fait pour vous,
“Now therefore, if you have dealt truly and righteously, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his hands
17 des combats que mon père a livrés pour vous, des dangers auxquels il a exposé sa vie pour vous, afin de vous sauver des mains des Madianites…
(for my father fought for you, risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian;
18 (mais aujourd'hui vous vous êtes levés contre la maison de mon père, et vous avez égorgé ses fils, soixante-dix hommes sur une pierre; et vous avez établi Abimélech, fils de sa servante, roi des citoyens de Sichem, parce qu'il est votre frère),
and you have risen up against my father’s house today and have slain his sons, seventy persons, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);
19 si c'est avec sincérité et droiture qu'en ce jour vous en avez agi avec Jérubbaal et sa maison, alors soyez satisfaits d'Abimélech, et que lui aussi soit satisfait de vous;
if you then have dealt truly and righteously with Jerubbaal and with his house today, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you;
20 sinon, un feu sortira d'Abimélech et dévorera les citoyens de Sichem et les habitants de la citadelle, et un feu sortira des citoyens de Sichem et des habitants de la citadelle, et dévorera Abimélech. »
but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the men of Shechem and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem and from the house of Millo and devour Abimelech.”
21 Et Jotham se retira et s'enfuit, et gagna Béer où il vécut à distance d'Abimélech, son frère.
Jotham ran away and fled, and went to Beer and lived there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22 Et Abimélech fut pendant trois ans le prince d'Israël.
Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.
23 Alors Dieu envoya un mauvais esprit entre Abimélech et les citoyens de Sichem; et les citoyens de Sichem se révoltèrent contre Abimélech,
Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,
24 afin que l'atrocité commise sur les soixante-dix fils de Jérubbaal retombât et que leur sang rejaillît sur Abimélech, leur frère, qui était leur meurtrier, et sur les citoyens de Sichem, qui lui avaient prêté main-forte pour égorger ses frères.
that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother who killed them, and on the men of Shechem who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.
25 Et les citoyens de Sichem apostèrent contre lui des gens en embuscade sur les sommets des montagnes; et ils pillaient tous ceux qui passaient près d'eux sur la route. Et l'avis en fut donné à Abimélech.
The men of Shechem set an ambush for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who came along that way by them; and Abimelech was told about it.
26 Alors arriva Gaal, fils de Ebed, avec ses frères; et ils entrèrent dans Sichem; et les citoyens de Sichem eurent confiance en lui.
Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.
27 Et ils firent une excursion dans la campagne et vendangèrent leurs vignes, et pressurèrent, et firent une fête, et entrèrent dans le temple de leur dieu, et mangèrent et burent et maudirent Abimélech.
They went out into the field, harvested their vineyards, trod the grapes, celebrated, and went into the house of their god and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.
28 Et Gaal, fils de Ebed, disait: Qui est Abimélech et qu'est Sichem pour que nous lui soyons asservis? N'est-il pas fils de Jérubbaal, et Zebul n'est-il pas son lieutenant? Soumettez-vous aux hommes de Hamor, père de Sichem; mais pourquoi lui serions-nous soumis, nous?
Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal? Isn’t Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem, but why should we serve him?
29 Oh! si l'on me donnait la conduite de ce peuple! je mettrais de côté Abimélech! Et il disait à Abimélech: Renforce ton armée et parais!
I wish that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” He said to Abimelech, “Increase your army and come out!”
30 Et Zebul, commandant de la ville, eut avis des propos de Gaal, fils de Ebed; et sa colère s'alluma,
When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger burned.
31 et il dépêcha secrètement des messagers à Abimélech pour lui dire: Voici, Gaal, fils de Ebed, et ses frères sont entrés dans Sichem, et voilà qu'ils soulèvent la ville contre toi.
He sent messengers to Abimelech craftily, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and behold, they incite the city against you.
32 Pars donc pendant la nuit avec les troupes que tu as avec toi, et viens te mettre en embuscade dans les champs.
Now therefore, go up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field.
33 Et le lendemain au lever du soleil, lève-toi le matin et fais irruption contre la ville; et voici, lui et les gens qui sont avec lui, feront une sortie contre toi: alors agis contre lui d'après les occurences.
It shall be that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early and rush on the city. Behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, then may you do to them as you shall find occasion.”
34 Là-dessus Abimélech se mit en marche de nuit avec toutes les troupes qu'il avait, et il vint se placer en embuscade près de Sichem, en quatre, divisions.
Abimelech rose up, and all the people who were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
35 Et Gaal, fils de Ebed, sortit et se posta à l'entrée de la porte de la ville. Alors Abimélech et les troupes qu'il avait avec lui quittèrent l'embuscade.
Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. Abimelech rose up, and the people who were with him, from the ambush.
36 Et à la vue des troupes Gaal dit à Zebul: Voilà des troupes qui descendent des sommets des montagnes. Et Zebul lui dit: Tu prends l'ombre des montagnes pour des hommes.
When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” Zebul said to him, “You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men.”
37 Et Gaal reprit la parole et dit: Voilà des troupes qui descendent de la sommité du pays, et une division arrive du chemin du chêne des augures.
Gaal spoke again and said, “Behold, people are coming down by the middle of the land, and one company comes by the way of the oak of Meonenim.”
38 Et Zebul lui dit: Eh bien! où est cette bouche de laquelle sortaient tes propos: Qui est Abimélech pour que nous lui soyons asservis? N'est-ce pas là la troupe que tu méprisais? Allons! en avant! mesure-toi avec lui!
Then Zebul said to him, “Now where is your mouth, that you said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Isn’t this the people that you have despised? Please go out now and fight with them.”
39 Alors Gaal s'avança à la tête des citoyens de Sichem et livra bataille à Abimélech.
Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
40 Et Abimélech le poursuivit, et il prit la fuite devant lui, et jusqu'à l'entrée de la porte il y eut beaucoup de monde tué.
Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many fell wounded, even to the entrance of the gate.
41 Et Abimélech resta à Aruma, et Zebul chassa Gaal et ses frères, qui ainsi cessèrent de demeurer dans Sichem.
Abimelech lived at Arumah; and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, that they should not dwell in Shechem.
42 Et le lendemain le peuple parut dans la campagne et Abimélech en fut informé.
On the next day, the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.
43 Alors il prit sa troupe et la partagea en trois corps, et se mit en embuscade dans les champs. Il observa, et dès que le peuple sortit de la ville, il l'attaqua et le défit.
He took the people and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and behold, the people came out of the city. So, he rose up against them and struck them.
44 Et Abimélech et les corps qui étaient avec lui se précipitèrent et vinrent prendre position à l'entrée de la porte de la ville, et deux corps se jetèrent sur tous ceux qui étaient dans les champs, et les battirent.
Abimelech and the companies that were with him rushed forward and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city; and the two companies rushed on all who were in the field and struck them.
45 Et Abimélech donna l'assaut à la ville toute la journée, et il la prit et massacra le peuple qui s'y trouvait, et il rasa la ville et y sema du sel.
Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city and killed the people in it. He beat down the city and sowed it with salt.
46 A l'ouïe de ces choses, les habitants de la Tour de Sichem gagnèrent le donjon du temple du dieu Berith.
When all the men of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.
47 Et on rapporta à Abimélech que tous les habitants de la Tour de Sichem étaient réunis.
Abimelech was told that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48 Alors Abimélech gravit la montagne du Tsalmon avec toute la troupe qu'il avait avec lui; et Abimélech prit une hache dans sa main, et coupa une branche d'arbre, et l'enleva et la mit sur son épaule, et il dit à la troupe qui l'accompagnait: Ce que vous m'avez vu faire, hâtez-vous de le faire comme moi.
Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an ax in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder. Then he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done!”
49 Alors tous les hommes de la troupe coupèrent aussi chacun sa branche, et suivirent Abimélech et posèrent [les branches] sur le donjon, et ils incendièrent le donjon avec ceux qui y étaient. Et tous les habitants de la Tour de Sichem moururent aussi, au nombre de mille, hommes et femmes.
All the people likewise each cut down his bough, followed Abimelech, and put them at the base of the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
50 Et Abimélech marcha contre Thébets, et il bloqua Thébets et la prit.
Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51 Or il y avait au milieu de la ville une tour forte où tous se réfugièrent, hommes et femmes et tous les citoyens de la ville; ils s'y enfermèrent et montèrent sur le toit de la tour.
But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women of the city fled there, and shut themselves in, and went up to the roof of the tower.
52 Et Abimélech arriva à cette tour et il l'attaqua et s'approcha jusqu'à la porte de la tour, pour la brûler.
Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it, and came near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 Alors une femme lança un fragment de meule sur la tête d'Abimélech et lui brisa le crâne.
A certain woman cast an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, and broke his skull.
54 Aussitôt il appela son valet qui portait ses armes et lui dit: Tire ton épée et tue-moi, afin qu'on ne dise pas de moi: Une femme l'a tué. Et son valet le transperça et il mourut.
Then he called hastily to the young man, his armor bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, that men not say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’ His young man thrust him through, and he died.”
55 Et quand les hommes d'Israël virent Abimélech mort, ils rentrèrent chacun chez soi.
When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they each departed to his place.
56 Ainsi tout le mal qu'Abimélech avait fait à son père, en égorgeant ses soixante-dix frères,
Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father in killing his seventy brothers;
57 et tout le mal qu'avaient fait les gens de Sichem, Dieu le fit retomber sur leur tête; et ainsi s'accomplit sur eux la malédiction de Jotham, fils de Jérubbaal.
and God repaid all the wickedness of the men of Shechem on their heads; and the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal came on them.
