1 Et les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui déplaît à l'Éternel; c'est pourquoi l'Éternel les livra aux mains des Madianites pendant sept ans.

8 l'Éternel envoya un prophète aux enfants d'Israël, et il leur dit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Je vous ai amenés de l'Egypte et retirés de la maison de servitude,

11 Ensuite vint un Ange de l'Éternel qui s'assit sous le térébinthe d'Ophra appartenant à Joas de la maison de Abi-Ezer. Et Gédéon, son fils, battait du froment au pressoir pour le mettre à l'abri des Madianites.

13 Et Gédéon lui dit: Pardonne! mon Seigneur. Si l'Éternel est avec nous, pourquoi toutes ces choses nous sont-elles advenues? Et où sont tous Ses miracles que nous ont racontés nos pères en disant: L'Éternel ne nous a-t-Il pas retirés de l'Egypte? Eh bien! l'Éternel nous a abandonnés et nous a livrés aux mains des Madianites.

19 Et Gédéon entra et apprêta un chevreau et un épha de farine sans levain; il mit la chair dans la corbeille et le jus dans le vase à cuire; puis il l'apporta vers Lui sous le térébinthe, et le Lui offrit.

21 Et l'Ange de l'Éternel présentant le bout du bâton qu'il avait à la main, toucha la chair et les azymes, et le feu jaillit du rocher, et consuma la chair et les azymes, et l'Ange de l'Éternel disparut.

22 Alors Gédéon vit que c'était un ange de l'Éternel, et Gédéon dit: Ah! Seigneur, Éternel… car puisque j'ai vu un ange de l'Éternel face à face…

23 Et l'Éternel lui dit: Salut pour toi! n'aie pas peur! tu ne mourras pas.

24 Alors Gédéon éleva là un autel à l'Éternel, et il l'appela Jehova-Schalom (Éternel Salut). Il subsiste encore aujourd'hui à Ophra des Abi-Ezrites.

25 Et pendant la nuit même l'Éternel lui dit: Prends le jeune taureau de ton père, et un second taureau de sept ans, et démolis l'autel de Baal, qui est à ton père et coupe l'Aschère qui est auprès.

26 Puis élève un autel à l'Éternel, ton Dieu, sur le sommet de ce rocher avec la pile du bûcher, et prends le second taureau, et offre un holocauste avec le bois de l'Aschère que tu auras coupée.

27 Alors Gédéon prit dix hommes parmi ses serviteurs et exécuta ce que l'Éternel lui avait dit. Et comme il craignait de le faire de jour à la vue de la maison de son père et des gens de la ville, il le fit de nuit.

29 Et ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: Qui a fait cela? Et ils firent des recherches et des perquisitions et dirent: C'est Gédéon, fils de Joas, qui l'a fait.

30 Alors les gens de la ville dirent à Joas: Livre ton fils et qu'il meure! car il a détruit l'autel de Baal et coupé l'Aschère avoisinante.

31 Et Joas dit à tous ceux qui l'entouraient: Voulez-vous prendre parti pour Baal ou voulez-vous le sauver? Celui qui prendra parti pour Baal sera mis à mort d'ici à demain. S'il est dieu, il peut se venger lui-même de la destruction de son autel.

32 Et ce jour-là on l'appela Jérubbaal, en disant: Que Baal le prenne à partie pour avoir démoli son autel.

33 Cependant Madian entier, et Amalek, et les enfants de l'Orient, se réunirent tous et passèrent [le Jourdain] et campèrent dans la vallée de Jizréel.

38 Et ainsi arriva. Et le lendemain à son lever il pressa la toison et il en exprima toute une jatte d'eau.
