Juges 3
1 Or voici les nations que l'Éternel épargna pour mettre par elles à l'épreuve les Israélites, tous ceux qui n'avaient pas connu par eux-mêmes toutes les guerres de Canaan,
NOW these are the nations which the Lord left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
2 uniquement pour donner l'expérience aux générations des enfants d'Israël, leur apprendre la guerre, à ceux seulement qui jadis ne l'avaient pas connue par eux-mêmes:
Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
3 cinq princes des Philistins et tous les Cananéens et les Sidoniens et les Hévites établis au mont Liban depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusque vers Hamath.
Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath.
4 Et ils servirent d'instruments pour éprouver Israël et montrer s'il serait docile aux commandements de l'Éternel, prescrits à ses pères par l'organe de Moïse.
And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
5 Les enfants d'Israël demeurèrent donc au milieu des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Amoréens, et des Perizzites et des Hévites et des Jébusites;
And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:
6 et ils prirent leurs filles pour femmes, et marièrent leurs filles à leurs fils, et servirent leurs dieux.
And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
7 Et les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui déplaît à l'Éternel, et oublièrent l'Éternel, leur Dieu, et servirent les Baals et les Aschères.
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgat the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
8 Alors la colère de l'Éternel s'alluma contre Israël et Il les vendit entre les mains de Cusan-Risathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, et les enfants d'Israël furent asservis huit ans à Cusan-Risathaïm.
Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.
9 Alors les enfants d'Israël crièrent vers l'Éternel, et l'Éternel suscita aux enfants d'Israël un libérateur qui les sauva, Othniel, fils de Kénaz, frère cadet de Caleb.
And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
10 Et l'Esprit de l'Éternel reposa sur lui, et il jugea Israël, et il entra en campagne. Et l'Éternel livra entre ses mains Cusan-Risathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, et sa main l'emporta sur Cusan-Risathaïm.
And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the Lord delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.
11 Ainsi, le pays eut un repos de quarante ans, et Othniel, fils de Kénaz, mourut.
And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
12 Et les enfants d'Israël continuèrent à faire ce qui déplaît à l'Éternel, et l'Éternel prêta force à Eglon, roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu'ils faisaient ce qui déplaît à l'Éternel.
And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.
13 Et il s'adjoignit les enfants d'Ammon et Amalek, et il se mit en marche et défit Israël, et la Ville des Palmiers fut prise par eux.
And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
14 Et les enfants d'Israël furent asservis à Eglon, roi de Moab, durant dix-huit ans.
So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
15 Alors les enfants d'Israël crièrent vers l'Éternel, et l'Éternel leur suscita un libérateur, Ehud, fils de Géra, Benjaminite, homme perclus de la main droite. Alors les enfants d'Israël envoyèrent par son entremise un présent à Eglon, roi de Moab.
But when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.
16 Et Ehud se fit un glaive à double tranchant, long d'une coudée, et il se l'attacha sous sa casaque sur le flanc droit.
But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.
17 Et ainsi, il porta le présent à Eglon, roi de Moab; or Eglon était un homme de très grand embonpoint.
And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.
18 Et lorsqu'il eut achevé l'offrande du présent, il reconduisit les gens qui en avaient été les porteurs;
And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
19 mais lui-même il rebroussa aux Idoles près de Guilgal et fit faire ce message: J'ai à te dire un mot en secret, ô Roi! Et celui-ci dit: Chut! Alors sortirent de sa présence tous ses entours.
But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
20 Et Ehud l'aborda; or le roi qui était assis dans son cabinet de fraîcheur, se trouva seul. Et Ehud parla: J'ai un message de Dieu pour toi; et il se leva de son siège.
And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
21 Alors Ehud avança la main gauche, et tirant son glaive de son flanc droit il le lui plongea dans le ventre
And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:
22 tellement que la poignée aussi s'enfonça après la lame, et que la graisse se referma sur le glaive; car il ne retira pas le glaive du ventre du roi; et il ressortit par derrière.
And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.
23 Et Ehud sortant passa dans le péristyle et ferma après lui les portes du pavillon, et poussa les verrous.
Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
24 Et lorsqu'il fut parti, les serviteurs du roi entrèrent, et remarquant que les portes du pavillon étaient fermées aux verrous, ils dirent: Sans doute il se couvre les pieds dans son cabinet de fraîcheur.
When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
25 Et ils furent très longtemps à attendre; et voici, personne n'ouvrait les portes du pavillon; alors ils prirent la clef et ouvrirent, et voilà que leur maître était étendu par terre mort.
And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
26 Cependant Ehud s'était échappé, tandis qu'ils hésitaient; il passa les Idoles et se sauva à Séïra.
And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.
27 Et en arrivant il sonna de la trompette sur la montagne d'Ephraïm, et les enfants d'Israël descendirent avec lui de la montagne, lui à leur tête.
And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
28 Et il leur dit: Suivez-moi! car l'Éternel a livré vos ennemis, les Moabites, entre vos mains. Et ils descendirent sous sa conduite, et ils occupèrent les gués du Jourdain vis-à-vis de Moab; et ils ne laissaient passer personne.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the Lord hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
29 Et dans ce temps-là ils défirent, les Moabites, qui étaient environ dix mille, tous hommes robustes et guerriers dont pas un n'échappa.
And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
30 C'est ainsi qu'en ce temps Moab fléchit sous la main d'Israël. Et le pays eut quatre-vingts ans de repos.
So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.
31 Et après lui il y eut Samgar, fils d'Anath; il défit les Philistins, au nombre de six cents hommes, avec un aiguillon de bouvier; lui aussi fut le libérateur d'Israël.
And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
