Juges 11
1 Et Jephthé de Galaad était un brave guerrier; or il était fils d'une courtisane, et Galaad avait engendré Jephthé.
Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.
2 Et lorsque l'épouse de Galaad lui eut donné des fils et que les fils de l'épouse furent adultes, ils avaient chassé Jephthé en lui disant: Tu ne peux être héritier dans la maison de notre père, car tu es le fils d'une autre femme.
And Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said to him, You shall not inherit in our father’s house; for you are the son of a strange woman.
3 Alors Jephthé s'était enfui loin de ses frères et s'était établi dans la contrée de Tob. Et des aventuriers affluèrent vers Jephthé, et ils allèrent en course avec lui.
Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and dwelled in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.
4 Et quelque temps après survint la guerre des Ammonites contre Israël.
And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
5 Et comme les Ammonites en étaient venus aux hostilités avec Israël, les Anciens de Galaad partirent pour aller chercher Jephthé au pays de Tob.
And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:
6 Et ils dirent à Jephthé: Viens et sois notre général pour nous mener au combat contre les Ammonites. Et Jephthé dit aux Anciens de Galaad:
And they said to Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.
7 N'est-ce pas vous qui m'avez haï et chassé de la maison de mon père? Et pourquoi venez-vous à moi maintenant que vous êtes dans l'embarras?
And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, Did not you hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are you come to me now when you are in distress?
8 Et les Anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephthé: C'est à cause de cela que nous revenons maintenant à toi: viens donc avec nous combattre les Ammonites, et sois notre chef à nous tous les habitants de Galaad.
And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to you now, that you may go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
9 Et Jephthé dit aux Anciens de Galaad: Si vous me ramenez pour combattre les Ammonites, et que l'Éternel me rende maître d'eux, moi je veux rester votre chef.
And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, If you bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
10 Et les Anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephthé: Que l'Éternel entende ce qui se traite entre nous! Oui, nous ferons ce que tu viens de dire.
And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to your words.
11 Alors Jephthé partit avec les Anciens de Galaad, et le peuple le préposa sur lui-même comme chef et général. Et Jephthé prononça toutes ces paroles en la présence de l'Éternel à Mitspa.
Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.
12 Alors Jephthé dépêcha des messagers au Roi des Ammonites pour lui dire: Qu'avons-nous à démêler ensemble, que tu marches contre moi pour faire la guerre à mon pays?
And Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What have you to do with me, that you are come against me to fight in my land?
13 Et le roi des Ammonites dit aux messagers de Jephthé: C'est qu'Israël s'est emparé de mon pays, lors de sa sortie de l'Egypte, depuis l'Arnon au Jabbok et au Jourdain. Et maintenant restitue-le à l'amiable.
And the king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even to Jabbok, and to Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.
14 Alors Jephthé dépêcha de nouveau des messagers au roi des Ammonites
And Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon:
15 pour lui dire: Ainsi parle Jephthé: Israël ne s'est emparé ni du pays de Moab, ni du pays des Ammonites.
And said to him, Thus says Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:
16 Car après sa sortie de l'Egypte, Israël parcourut le désert jusqu'à la Mer aux algues, et il atteignit Cadès.
But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness to the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
17 Alors Israël envoya des messagers au roi d'Edom pour lui dire: Daigne m'accorder le passage par ton territoire! Mais le roi d'Edom ne consentit pas. Et ils députèrent aussi auprès du roi de Moab, et celui-ci ne voulut pas. Israël resta donc à Cadès.
Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray you, pass through your land: but the king of Edom would not listen thereto. And in like manner they sent to the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel stayed in Kadesh.
18 Et il parcourut le désert, et tourna le pays d'Edom et le pays de Moab, et ils arrivèrent à l'orient du pays de Moab et ils campèrent au delà de l'Arnon, sans entrer sur le territoire de Moab; car l'Arnon forme la frontière de Moab.
Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.
19 Alors Israël envoya des messagers à Sihon, roi des Amoréens, roi de Hesbon, et Israël lui disait: Daigne m'accorder le passage à travers ton pays jusqu'au lieu où je vais.
And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, Let us pass, we pray you, through your land into my place.
20 Mais Sihon ne se crut pas assez sûr des Israélites pour les laisser passer sur son territoire, et Sihon rassembla tout son peuple et campa à Jahtsa et fit la guerre à Israël.
But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
21 Et l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, livra Sihon et tout son peuple aux mains des Israélites qui les battirent. Et Israël conquit tout le pays des Amoréens établis dans cette contrée.
And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22 Et ils conquirent tout le territoire des Amoréens de l'Arnon au Jabbok et du désert au Jourdain.
And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even to Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to Jordan.
23 Ainsi l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, a expulsé les Amoréens devant son peuple d'Israël! et toi, tu voudrais t'emparer de leur pays!
So now the LORD God of Israel has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess it?
24 N'as-tu pas la propriété de ce dont Camos, ton dieu, t'a mis en possession? De même nous avons la propriété de tout ce dont l'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous a mis en possession.
Will not you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.
25 Et puis, es-tu mieux placé que Balak, fils de Tsippor, roi de Moab? A-t-il cherché querelle aux Israélites ou leur a-t-il fait la guerre?
And now are you any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,
26 Pendant les trois cents ans du séjour des Israélites dans Hesbon et ses annexes, dans Aroër et ses annexes et toutes les villes sises sur les bords de l'Arnon, pourquoi ne les avez-vous pas revendiquées à cette époque-là?
While Israel dwelled in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did you not recover them within that time?
27 Moi, je n'ai pas failli à ton égard, et toi, tu en agis mal avec moi, en me faisant la guerre. Que l'Éternel, qui est Juge, prononce donc aujourd'hui entre les enfants d'Israël et les enfants d'Ammon!
Why I have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.
28 Mais le roi des Ammonites n'écouta point les raisons que Jephthé lui avait fait alléguer.
However, the king of the children of Ammon listened not to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29 Alors l'esprit de l'Éternel descendit sur Jephthé, qui, traversant Galaad et Manassé, passa à Mitspa en Galaad et de Mitspa en Galaad marcha contre les Ammonites.
Then the Spirit of the LORD came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.
30 Et Jephthé fit un vœu à l'Éternel en ces termes: Si tu livres les Ammonites entre mes mains,
And Jephthah vowed a vow to the LORD, and said, If you shall without fail deliver the children of Ammon into my hands,
31 la personne qui de la porte de ma maison sortira à ma rencontre, moi revenant sain et sauf de la guerre des Ammonites, appartiendra à l'Éternel et je la Lui offrirai en holocauste.
Then it shall be, that whatever comes forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
32 Puis Jephthé marcha contre les Ammonites pour engager le combat avec eux. Et l'Éternel les livra entre ses mains.
So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.
33 Et il les battit depuis Aroër jusque vers Minnith, dans vingt villes, et jusqu'à Abel-Keramim; ce fut une grande défaite et les Ammonites furent abaissés devant les enfants d'Israël.
And he smote them from Aroer, even till you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
34 Et comme Jephthé revenait dans sa maison à Mitspa, voilà que sa fille sortit à sa rencontre avec des tambourins et des chœurs; et elle était seule, unique; il n'avait point d'autres fils ou filles.
And Jephthah came to Mizpeh to his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
35 Et quand il la vit, il déchira ses vêtements et dit: Ah! ma fille! tu m'atterres, tu m'atterres! c'est toi qui me plonges dans l'affliction! J'ai laissé ma bouche promettre à l'Éternel et je ne puis revenir en arrière!
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! you have brought me very low, and you are one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth to the LORD, and I cannot go back.
36 Et elle lui dit: Mon père, si tu as laissé ta bouche promettre à l'Éternel, traite-moi d'après ce qu'a proféré ta bouche, dès que l'Éternel t'a permis de tirer vengeance de tes ennemis, des enfants d'Ammon.
And she said to him, My father, if you have opened your mouth to the LORD, do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth; for as much as the LORD has taken vengeance for you of your enemies, even of the children of Ammon.
37 Et elle dit à son père: Qu'une chose me soit accordée: relâche-toi de deux mois en ma faveur, et j'irai m'enfoncer dans les montagnes et y pleurer ma virginité avec mes compagnes.
And she said to her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down on the mountains, and mourn my virginity, I and my fellows.
38 Et il lui dit: Va! et il la laissa libre pour deux mois. Et elle s'en alla avec ses compagnes et pleura sa virginité sur les montagnes.
And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains.
39 Et au bout de deux mois elle revint chez son père et il accomplit sur elle le vœu qu'il avait fait. Et elle ne connut point d'homme.
And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
40 Et l'usage s'établit en Israël que toutes les années les filles d'Israël s'en vont pendant quarante jours de l'année louer la fille de Jephthé, de Galaad.
That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
