Josué 9

1 A ces nouvelles, tous les rois du pays en deçà du Jourdain, de la Montagne, du Pays-bas et de toutes les côtes de la Grande Mer vis-à-vis du Liban, les Héthiens, et les Amoréens, les Cananéens, les Périzzites, les Hévites et les Jébusites

And when all the Kings that were beyonde Iorden, in the mountaines and in the valleis, and by all the coastes of the great Sea ouer against Lebanon (as the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebusites) heard thereof,

2 se coalisèrent pour attaquer Josué et Israël, d'un commun accord.

They gathered themselues together, to fight against Ioshua, and against Israel with one accord.

3 Mais les habitants de Gabaon apprenant comment Josué avait traité Jéricho et Aï, eurent de leur côté recours à la ruse.

But the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Ioshua had done vnto Iericho, and to Ai.

4 Ils partirent donc et allèrent en ambassade, et, sur leurs ânes, ils emportèrent des sacs usés, et des outres à vin usées, trouées et ravaudées,

And therefore they wrought craftily: for they went, and fayned themselues ambassadours, and tooke olde sackes vpon their asses, and olde bottels for wine, both rent and bound vp,

5 et à leurs pieds de vieilles sandales rapetassées, et sur eux-mêmes des haillons, et tout leur pain de provision était sec et en miettes.

And olde shoes and clouted vpon their feete: also the raiment vpon them was old, and all their prouision of bread was dried, and mouled.

6 Et ils se rendirent vers Josué au camp de Guilgal, et ils lui dirent ainsi qu'aux hommes d'Israël: Nous arrivons d'un pays lointain; dès là accordez-nous une alliance.

So they came vnto Ioshua into the hoste to Gilgal, and said vnto him, and vnto the men of Israel, Wee be come from a farre countrey: nowe therefore make a league with vs.

7 Et les hommes d'Israël dirent à ces Hévites: Vous habitez peut-être au milieu de nous; comment nous serait-il possible de vous accorder une alliance?

Then the men of Israel said vnto the Hiuites, It may be that thou dwellest among vs, how then can I make a league with thee?

8 Et ils dirent à Josué: Nous sommes tes serviteurs. Et Josué leur dit: Qui êtes-vous? d'où pouvez-vous venir?

And they said vnto Ioshua, We are thy seruants. Then Ioshua saide vnto them, Who are ye? and whence come ye?

9 Et ils lui dirent: Tes serviteurs viennent, au nom de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, d'un pays très éloigné; car nous avons entendu parler de Lui et de tout ce qu'il a fait en Egypte,

And they answered him, From a very farre countrey thy seruants are come for the Name of the Lord thy God: for we haue heard his fame and all that he hath done in Egypt,

10 et de tout ce qu'il a fait aux deux rois des Amoréens au delà du Jourdain, à Sihon, roi de Hesbon, et à Og, roi de Basan, qui était à Astaroth.

And all that he hath done to the two Kings of the Amorites that were beyonde Iorden, to Sihon King of Heshbon, and to Og King of Bashan, which were at Ashtaroth.

11 Et nos Anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont parlé en ces termes: Prenez avec vous des provisions pour le voyage et allez vous présenter à eux et leur dire: Nous sommes vos serviteurs; accordez-nous donc une alliance.

Wherefore our elders, and all the inhabitants of our countrey spake to vs, saying, Take vitailes with you for the iourney, and go to meete them, and say vnto them, Wee are your seruants: now therefore make ye a league with vs.

12 Voyez! notre pain, nous l'avons pour notre viatique pris chaud dans nos maisons le jour de notre départ pour venir à vous; et maintenant, le voilà sec et en miettes.

This our bread we tooke it hote with vs for vittailes out of our houses, the day we departed to come vnto you: but nowe beholde, it is dried, and it is mouled.

13 Et ces outres à vin que nous avons remplies neuves, les voilà trouées, et ces habits que nous portons et ces souliers que nous avons, se sont usés par l'effet d'une marche bien longue.

Also these bottels of wine which we filled, were newe, and lo, they be rent, and these our garments and our shooes are olde, by reason of the exceeding great iourney.

14 Alors les Israélites acceptèrent de leurs provisions, et ils ne consultèrent point l'Éternel.

And the men accepted their tale concerning their vittailes, and counselled not with the mouth of the Lord.

15 Et Josué fit avec eux une capitulation et leur accorda une alliance portant qu'on leur laisserait la vie; et les Princes de l'Assemblée se lièrent envers eux par un serment.

So Ioshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, that he would suffer them to liue: also the Princes of the Congregation sware vnto them.

16 Et trois jours après leur avoir accordé l'alliance ils apprirent qu'ils étaient tout près d'eux et habitaient au milieu d'eux.

But at the end of three dayes, after they had made a league with them, they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

17 Et les enfants d'Israël se mirent en marche et atteignirent leurs villes le troisième jour; or leurs villes étaient Gabaon, et Caphira et Beéroth et Kiriath-Jearim.

And the children of Israel tooke their iourney, and came vnto their cities the third day, and their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth and Kiriath-iearim.

18 Et les enfants d'Israël ne les exterminèrent pas à cause du serment que leur avaient fait les Princes de l'Assemblée par l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël. Alors toute l'Assemblée murmura contre les Princes.

And the children of Israel slewe them not, because the Princes of the Congregation had sworne vnto them by the Lord God of Israel: wherefore all the Congregation murmured against the Princes.

19 Et tous les Princes dirent à toute l'Assemblée: Nous leur avons fait serment par l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël; dès lors nous ne pouvons porter la main sur eux.

Then all the Princes said vnto all the Congregation, We haue sworne vnto them by the Lord God of Israel: nowe therefore we may not touch them.

20 Voici comment nous les traiterons: nous leur laisserons la vie afin de ne pas attirer sur nous des Vengeances…, en suite du serment que nous leur avons fait. Et les Princes leur dirent: Ils auront la vie sauve.

But this we wil doe to them, and let them liue, least the wrath be vpon vs because of the othe which we sware vnto them.

21 Et ils devinrent coupeurs de bois et porteurs d'eau auprès de toute l'Assemblée, comme les Princes le leur avaient dit.

And the Princes sayd vnto them againe, Let them liue, but they shall hewe wood, and drawe water vnto all the Congregation, as the Princes appoint them.

22 Alors Josué les fit venir et leur parla en ces termes: Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés en disant: Nous sommes à une très grande distance de vous, tandis que vous habitez au milieu de nous?

Ioshua then called them, and talked with them, and sayd, Wherefore haue ye beguiled vs, saying, We are very farre from you, when ye dwel among vs?

23 dès là vous êtes maudits, et vous ne cesserez jamais d'être dans la servitude, de couper le bois et de puiser l'eau pour la maison de mon Dieu.

Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24 Et ils répondirent à Josué et dirent: C'est qu'on avait instruit tes serviteurs de l'ordre donné par l'Éternel, ton Dieu, à Moïse, son serviteur, de vous livrer tout ce pays et d'en exterminer tous les habitants devant vous; aussi avons-nous eu grande peur pour nos vies à votre aspect; c'est pourquoi nous avons agi de telle sorte.

And they answered Ioshua, and sayd, Because it was tolde thy seruants, that the Lord thy God had commanded his seruant Moses to giue you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land out of your sight, therefore we were exceeding sore afraid for our liues at the presence of you, and haue done this thing:

25 Et maintenant nous voici entre tes mains: traite-nous comme il te semblera bon et juste de le faire.

And beholde nowe, we are in thine hand: doe as it seemeth good and right in thine eyes to doe vnto vs.

26 Et Josué agit ainsi à leur égard, et il les sauva des mains des enfants d'Israël, qui ne les massacrèrent pas;

Euen so did he vnto them, and deliuered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slewe them not.

27 mais en ce jour Josué disposa d'eux pour couper le bois et puiser l'eau pour l'Assemblée et pour l'Autel de l'Éternel jusqu'aujourd'hui, au lieu que choisirait l'Éternel.

And Ioshua appointed them that same day to be hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the Congregation, and for the altar of the Lord vnto this day, in the place which he should chuse.
