Josué 7
1 Or les enfants d'Israël se rendirent coupables de soustraction de choses dévouées. Car Achan, fils de Charmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zérah de la Tribu de Juda, prit de ce qui était dévoué, et la colère de l'Éternel s'alluma contre les enfants d'Israël.
But the sons of Israel committed a trespass in what was set apart. For Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took from what was set apart, and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the sons of Israel.
2 Cependant de Jéricho Josué envoya des hommes vers Aï qui est située près de Beth-Aven à l'orient de Béthel, en leur disant: Allez en avant et explorez le pays. Et ces hommes s'avancèrent et reconnurent Aï.
And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. And the men went up and spied out Ai.
3 Et étant revenus auprès de Josué, ils lui dirent: Il n'y a pas lieu de mettre tout le peuple en campagne; deux ou trois mille hommes environ n'ont qu'à marcher et ils réduiront Aï; n'en donne pas la fatigue à tout le peuple, car il n'y a que peu de monde.
And they returned to Joshua, and said to him, Let not all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai. Do not make all the people to toil there, for they are but few.
4 On ne fit donc marcher contre elle dans tout le peuple que trois mille hommes; mais ils prirent la fuite devant les hommes d'Aï.
So there went up there of the people about three thousand men. And they fled before the men of Ai.
5 Et les hommes d'Aï en tuèrent environ trente-six, et les poursuivirent depuis la porte jusqu'à Schebarim et les défirent à la descente; et le courage se fondit et s'écoula comme l'eau.
And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty-six men. And they chased them from before the gate even to Shebarim, and smote them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
6 Et Josué déchira ses vêtements, et fut prosterné la face contre terre devant l'Arche de l'Éternel jusqu'au soir, lui et les Anciens d'Israël, et ils lancèrent la poussière en l'air sur leurs têtes.
And Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of Jehovah until the evening, he and the elders of Israel, and they put dust upon their heads.
7 Et Josué dit: Ah! Seigneur, Éternel, pourquoi as-tu fait passer le Jourdain à ce peuple, pour nous livrer aux mains des Amoréens, pour nous perdre? si seulement nous nous étions contentés de rester au delà du Jourdain!
And Joshua said, Alas, O lord Jehovah, why have thou at all brought this people over the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? Would that we had been content and dwelt beyond the Jordan!
8 Je te le demande, ô mon Seigneur, que puis-je dire après qu'Israël a tourné le dos devant ses ennemis?
Oh, Lord, what shall I say after Israel has turned their backs before their enemies!
9 Et les Cananéens et tous les habitants du pays vont l'apprendre et nous cerner et faire disparaître notre nom de la terre. Et que veux-tu faire pour ton grand Nom?
For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will encompass us around, and cut off our name from the earth, and what will thou do for thy great name?
10 Et l'Éternel dit à Josué: Relève-toi! pourquoi t'es-tu jeté la face contre terre?
And Jehovah said to Joshua, Get thee up. Why are thou thus fallen upon thy face?
11 Israël a péché; et même ils ont transgressé mon alliance que je leur ai prescrite, et même retenu des choses dévouées, et même dérobé et dissimulé, et ils les ont cachées parmi leurs bagages.
Israel has sinned. Yes, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them. Yes, they have even taken from what was set apart, and have also stolen, and also dissembled. And they have even put it among their own stuff.
12 C'est pourquoi les enfants d'Israël ne peuvent tenir tête à leurs ennemis, et tournent le dos devant leurs ennemis; car ils sont sous l'anathème. Je ne serai plus désormais avec vous, si vous n'exterminez pas le sacrilège du milieu de vous.
Therefore the sons of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies because they have become accursed. I will not be with you any more unless ye destroy what was set apart from among you.
13 Lève-toi, mets le peuple en état de sainteté et dis: Mettez-vous pour demain en état de sainteté; car ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Il y a un anathème au milieu de toi, Israël; vous ne sauriez tenir tête à vos ennemis jusqu'à ce que vous ayez ôté l'anathème du milieu de vous.
Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow. For thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, There is what has been set apart in the midst of thee, O Israel. Thou cannot stand before thine enemies until ye take away the devoted thing from among you.
14 Vous vous présenterez donc le matin par Tribus, et la Tribu que tirera l'Éternel, s'avancera par familles, et la famille que l'Éternel tirera s'avancera par maisons, et la maison que tirera l'Éternel s'avancera par individus.
In the morning therefore ye shall be brought near by your tribes, and it shall be, that the tribe which Jehovah takes shall come near by families, and the family which Jehovah shall take shall come near by households, and the household which Jehovah shall take shall come near man by man.
15 Et celui qui sera désigné comme sacrilège, sera brûlé au feu, lui et tout ce qui lui appartient, pour avoir transgressé l'alliance de l'Éternel et commis un forfait en Israël.
And it shall be, that he who is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of Jehovah, and because he has wrought folly in Israel.
16 Et Josué s'étant levé le matin fit approcher Israël par Tribus, et la Tribu de Juda fut désignée.
So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel near by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken.
17 Puis il fit approcher les familles de Juda, et on tira la famille de Zérah; et il fit approcher la famille de Zérah par individus, et Zabdi fut désigné,
And he brought near the family of Judah, and he took the family of the Zerahites. And he brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken.
18 et il fit approcher la maison de celui-ci par individus, et Achan, fils de Charmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zérah, de la Tribu de Juda fut pris.
And he brought near his household man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
19 Et Josué dit à Achan: Mon fils! Rends gloire à l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, et fais-lui hommage, et avoue-moi ce que tu as fait, et ne te cache pas de moi.
And Joshua said to Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to Jehovah, the God of Israel, and make confession to him, and tell me now what thou have done. Hide it not from me.
20 Et Achan répondit à Josué et dit: C'est la vérité; j'ai péché contre l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël; et voici, voici comment j'ai agi:
And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Of a truth I have sinned against Jehovah, the God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
21 j'aperçus dans le butin un beau manteau de Sinéar et deux cents sicles d'argent et un lingot d'or du poids de cinquante sicles, et j'ai convoité cela, et l'ai pris; et voilà, ces objets sont enfouis dans la terre au milieu de ma tente, et l'argent est dessous.
When I saw among the spoil a goodly Babylonian mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them. And, behold, they are hid in the ground in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
22 Et Josué dépêcha des commissaires qui coururent à la tente; et voici, les objets étaient enfouis dans sa tente, et l'argent au-dessous.
So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent. And, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
23 Et les ayant enlevés de la tente ils les apportèrent à Josué et à tous les enfants d'Israël, et ils les étalèrent devant l'Éternel.
And they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them to Joshua, and to all the sons of Israel, and they laid them down before Jehovah.
24 Alors Josué fit saisir Achan, fils de Zérah, et l'argent et le manteau et le lingot d'or et ses fils et ses filles et son bœuf et son âne et ses brebis et sa tente et tout ce qui lui appartenait, de concert avec tout Israël, et on les fit monter au val d'Achor.
And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his donkeys, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them up to the valley of Achor.
25 Et Josué dit: Pourquoi nous as-tu perdus? que l'Éternel te perde aujourd'hui! Et tout Israël le lapida, et les brûla au feu, et les assaillirent de pierres.
And Joshua said, Why have thou troubled us? Jehovah shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.
26 Et ils élevèrent sur lui un grand tas de pierres [demeuré] jusqu'aujourd'hui. Alors l'Éternel revint de son ardente colère. C'est pour cela que ce lieu a porté le nom de Val d'Achor (perdition) jusqu'aujourd'hui.
And they raised over him a great heap of stones, to this day, and Jehovah turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called the valley of Achor to this day.
