Josué 24

1 Et Josué réunit toutes les Tribus d'Israël à Sichem, et manda les Anciens d'Israël et ses Chefs et ses Juges et ses Officiers, et ils se présentèrent devant Dieu.

And Joshua gathered all the tribe of Israel to Selo, and convoked their elders, and their officers, and their judges, and set them before God.

2 Et Josué dit à tout le peuple: Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Dans les anciens temps vos pères, Thérah, père d'Abraham et père de Nachor, habitaient au delà du Fleuve, et servaient d'autres dieux.

And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, Your fathers at first sojourned beyond the river, [even] Thara, the father of Abraam and the father of Nachor; and they served other gods.

3 Alors je pris votre père Abraham d'au delà du Fleuve, et je lui fis parcourir tout le pays de Canaan, et je multipliai sa race, et lui donnai Isaac.

And I took your father Abraam from the other side of the river, and I guided him through all the land, and I multiplied his seed;

4 Et je donnai à Isaac Jacob et Esaü, et je donnai à Esaü la montagne de Séir pour l'occuper; et Jacob et ses fils descendirent en Egypte.

and I gave to him Isaac, and to Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave to Esau mount Seir for him to inherit: and Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt, and became there a great and populous and mighty nation: and the Egyptians afflicted them.

5 Et j'envoyai Moïse et Aaron et je frappai l'Egypte ainsi que je l'ai fait au milieu d'elle; après quoi je vous en retirai.

And I struck Egypt with the wonders that I wrought amongst them.

6 Je retirai donc vos pères de l'Egypte et vous arrivâtes à la mer et les Égyptiens poursuivirent vos pères avec des chars et de la cavalerie jusqu'à la Mer aux algues.

And afterwards [God] brought out our fathers from Egypt, and you entered into the Red Sea; and the Egyptians pursued after our fathers with chariots and horses into the Red Sea.

7 Alors ils crièrent vers l'Éternel, et Il mit des ténèbres entre vous et les Égyptiens, et ramena la mer sur eux et les submergea, et vos yeux virent comment je traitai les Égyptiens, et vous fîtes un long séjour dans le désert.

And we cried aloud to the Lord; and he put a cloud and darkness between us and the Egyptians, and he brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen all that the Lord did in the land of Egypt; and you were in the wilderness many days.

8 Et je vous amènerai dans le pays des Amoréens établis au delà du Jourdain, et quand ils vous firent la guerre, je les livrai entre vos mains et vous conquîtes leur pays et je les fis disparaître devant vous.

And he brought us into the land of the Amorites that lived beyond Jordan, and the Lord delivered them into our hands; and you inherited their land, and utterly destroyed them from before you.

9 Alors Balak, fils de Tsippor, roi de Moab, se mit en mouvement et attaqua Israël, et il envoya quérir Balaam, fils de Behor, pour vous maudire.

And Balac, king of Moab, son of Sepphor, rose up, and made war against Israel, and sent and called Balaam to curse us.

10 Mais je ne voulus pas écouter Balaam, et il dut vous bénir, et je vous arrachai de sa main.

But the Lord your God would not destroy you; and he greatly blessed us, and rescued us out of their hands, and delivered them [to us].

11 Et lorsque, après avoir passé le Jourdain, vous fûtes venus à Jéricho, les maîtres de Jéricho se mesurèrent avec vous, les Amoréens, les Perizzites, les Cananéens, les Héthiens et les Gergésites et les Hévites et les Jébusites, et je les livrai entre vos mains.

And you crossed over Jordan, and came to Jericho; and the inhabitants of Jericho fought against us, the Amorite, and the Chananite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Chettite, and the Gergesite, and the Lord delivered them into our hands.

12 Et je vous fis précéder par les frelons qui les chassèrent devant vous, les deux rois des Amoréens, et ce ne fut pas au moyen de votre épée et de votre arc.

And he sent forth the hornet before you; and he drove them out from before you, [even] twelve kings of the Amorites, not with your sword, nor with your bow.

13 Et je vous donnai un pays que vous n'aviez point cultivé, et des villes que vous n'aviez point bâties, et vous vous y êtes établis; vous jouissez de vignes et d'olivaies que vous n'avez point plantées.

And he gave you a land on which you did not labour, and cities which you did not build, and you were settled in them; and you eat [of] vineyards and olive yards which you did not plant.

14 Maintenant donc craignez l'Éternel et servez-le sans partage et en vérité, et défaites-vous des dieux que vos pères servirent au delà du Fleuve et en Egypte, et servez l'Éternel.

And now fear the Lord, and serve him in righteousness and justice; and remove the strange gods, which our fathers served beyond the river, and in Egypt; and serve the Lord.

15 Et si vous ne vous souciez pas de servir l'Éternel, faites aujourd'hui votre choix de qui vous voulez servir, soit des dieux que vos pères ont servis au delà du Fleuve, soit des dieux des Amoréens dont vous habitez le pays; quant à moi et à ma maison, nous servirons l'Éternel.

But if it seem not good to you to serve the Lord, choose to yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods of your fathers that were on the other side of the river, or the gods of the Amorites, amongst whom you dwell upon their land: but I and my house will serve the Lord, for he is holy.

16 Alors le peuple répondit et dit: Loin de nous la pensée de quitter l'Éternel pour servir d'autres dieux!

And the people answered and said, Far be it from us to forsake the Lord, so as to serve other gods.

17 Car l'Éternel est notre Dieu; c'est Lui qui nous a retirés, nous et nos pères, du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude et qui a opéré devant nos yeux ces grands signes, et nous a eus en sa garde pendant toute la route que nous avons faite, et au milieu de tous les peuples au travers desquels nous avons percé.

The Lord our God, he is God; he brought up us and our fathers from Egypt, and kept us in all the way wherein we walked, and amongst all the nations through whom we passed.

18 Et l'Éternel a chassé devant nous tous les peuples et les Amoréens établis dans le pays; nous voulons, nous aussi, servir l'Éternel, car Il est notre Dieu.

And the Lord cast out the Amorite, and all the nations that inhabited the land from before us: yes, we will serve the Lord, for he is our God.

19 Et Josué dit au peuple: Vous n'êtes pas à même de servir l'Éternel, car Il est un Dieu saint, un Dieu jaloux; Il ne pardonnera pas vos désobéissances et vos péchés.

And Joshua said to the people, Indeed you will not be able to serve the Lord, for God is holy; and he being jealous will not forgive your sins and your transgressions.

20 Si vous quittez l'Éternel pour servir des dieux de l'étranger, Il changera, et Il vous maltraitera, et vous exterminera après avoir été votre bienfaiteur.

Whenever you shall forsake the Lord and serve other gods, then he shall come upon you and afflict you, and consume you, because he has done you good.

21 Et le peuple dit à Josué: Non! car c'est l'Éternel que nous servirons.

And the people said to Joshua, Nay, but we will serve the Lord.

22 Et Josué dit au peuple: Vous êtes témoins contre vous-mêmes, que vous-mêmes vous avez fait votre choix de l'Éternel pour le servir. Et ils répondirent: Témoins!

And Joshua said to the people, You [are] witnesses against yourselves, that you have chosen the Lord to serve him.

23 « En suite de cela défaites-vous des dieux étrangers qui sont au milieu de vous, et tournez vos cœurs vers l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël. »

And now take away the strange gods that are amongst you, and set your heart right towards the Lord God of Israel.

24 Et le peuple dit à Josué: Nous servirons l'Éternel, notre Dieu, et nous obéirons à sa voix.

And the people said to Joshua, We will serve the Lord, and we will listen to his voice.

25 Alors Josué conclut une alliance avec le peuple en ce jour même et lui fixa ainsi à Sichem une loi et un droit.

So Joshua made a covenant with the people on that day, and gave them a law and an ordinance in Selo before the tabernacle of the God of Israel.

26 Et Josué transcrivit ces choses dans le Livre de la Loi de Dieu, et il prit une grande pierre qu'il érigea là sous le chêne dans le lieu consacré à l'Éternel.

And he wrote these words in the book of the laws of God: and Joshua took a great stone, and set it up under the oak before the Lord.

27 Et Josué dit à tout le peuple: Voici, cette pierre sera un témoin contre nous, car elle a ouï toutes les paroles de l'Éternel qu'il nous a adressées; qu'elle soit donc un témoin contre vous afin que vous ne reniiez pas votre Dieu.

And Joshua said to the people, Behold, this stone shall be amongst you for a witness, for it has heard all the words that have been spoken to it by the Lord; for he has spoken to you this day; and this [stone] shall be amongst you for a witness in the last days, whenever you shall deal falsely with the Lord my God.

28 Et Josué congédia le peuple pour que chacun se rendît dans sa propriété.

And Joshua dismissed the people, and they went every man to his place.

29 Et après ces choses Josué, fils de Nun, serviteur de l'Éternel, mourut à l'âge de cent dix ans.

And it came to pass after these things that Joshua the son of Naue the servant of the Lord died, [at the age] of a hundred and ten years.

30 Et il reçut la sépulture dans le territoire de son lot à Thimnath-Sérah dans la montagne d'Ephraïm au nord du mont Gaas.

And they buried him by the borders of his inheritance in Thamnasarach in the mount of Ephraim, northward of the mount of Galaad.

31 Et Israël servit l'Éternel durant toute la vie de Josué et durant toute la vie des Anciens qui survécurent à Josué, et qui connaissaient tous les actes que l'Éternel avait accomplis en faveur d'Israël.

And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that lived as long as Joshua, and all that knew all the works of the Lord which he wrought for Israel.

32 Et les os de Joseph que les enfants d'Israël avaient ramenés de l'Egypte, furent inhumés à Sichem dans la pièce de terre que Jacob avait achetée des fils de Hémor, père de Sichem, pour cent kesitas, et les fils de Joseph la reçurent en propriété.

And the children of Israel brought up the bones of Joseph out of Egypt, and buried [them] in Sicima, in the portion of the land which Jacob bought of the Amorites who lived in Sicima for a hundred ewe-lambs; and he gave it to Joseph for a portion.

33 Et Eléazar, fils d'Aaron, mourut, et il reçut la sépulture à Gibéa, ville de Phinées, son fils, laquelle lui avait été donnée dans la montagne d'Ephraïm.

And it came to pass afterwards that Eleazar the high-priest the son of Aaron died, and was buried in Gabaar of Phinees his son, which he gave him in mount Ephraim.
