Job 38
1 Et l'Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit:
THEN the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
2 Qui est-ce qui obscurcit mes décrets par des discours dénués d'intelligence?
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Eh bien! ceins tes reins, comme un homme! puis je te questionnerai, et tu m'instruiras.
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
4 Où étais-tu, quand je fondai la terre? Indique-le, si tu as vraiment la science!
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
5 Qui est-ce qui en fixa la dimension, que tu saches, ou étendit sur elle le cordeau?
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
6 Quel est le support jusqu'où ses bases plongent? Ou qui est-ce qui en a posé la pierre angulaire,
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
7 aux accords unanimes des étoiles du matin, aux acclamations de tous les Fils de Dieu?
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 Et qui est-ce qui enferma la mer entre des portes, quand elle fit éruption du sein maternel;
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
9 quand je lui donnai la nuée pour manteau, et les sombres vapeurs pour lui servir de langes;
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
10 quand je lui prescrivis ma loi, et que j'établis ses barres et ses portes,
And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
11 et que je dis: Jusqu'ici tu viendras, et pas plus avant! et ici s'arrêtera l'orgueil de tes vagues?
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
12 De ton vivant as-tu commandé au matin, et fait connaître à l'aurore le lieu d'où elle part,
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
13 pour saisir la terre par ses bords? Alors les impies en sont balayés,
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
14 alors la terre prend une face nouvelle, telle que l'argile qui reçoit une empreinte, et toutes choses paraissent comme pour la vêtir;
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
15 alors les impies perdent la clarté qu'ils aiment, et le bras qu'ils ont levé déjà, se brise.
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
16 As-tu pénétré jusqu'aux sources des mers, et au fond de l'abîme as-tu porté tes pas?
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
17 Les portes de la mort te furent-elles découvertes? As-tu vu les portes de la sombre mort?
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
18 Ton regard embrasse-t-il les contours de la terre? Raconte, si tu sais toutes ces choses!
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
19 Quelle route mène où la lumière habite? et la nuit, où fait-elle son séjour?
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
20 Iras-tu les chercher l'une et l'autre, pour les amener chacune à leurs limites? Et connais-tu le chemin de leur demeure?
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
21 Tu le sais! car alors tu étais déjà né! et le nombre de tes jours est immense!
Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
22 As-tu pénétré jusqu'aux dépôts de la neige, et as-tu vu les dépôts de la grêle,
Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
23 que je réserve pour les temps du désastre, pour le jour du combat et de la bataille?
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24 Quel chemin mène aux lieux où la lumière se divise, d'où le vent d'Est se répand sur la terre?
By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
25 Qui a fait ces conduits qui éparpillent la pluie, et a tracé une route à la foudre bruyante,
Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
26 afin d'arroser une terre inhabitée, une steppe où il n'y a pas un humain,
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
27 afin d'abreuver les lieux déserts et solitaires, et de fertiliser le sol qui donne le gazon?
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
28 La pluie a-t-elle un père? Ou qui est-ce qui engendra les gouttes de la rosée?
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
29 Du sein de qui la glace sort-elle? et qui est-ce qui produit le givre du ciel?
Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
30 Comme la pierre, les eaux se condensent, et la surface de l'abîme est enchaînée.
The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
31 As-tu formé le lien qui unit les Pléiades? Ou peux-tu détacher les chaînes d'Orion?
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
32 Fais-tu paraître en leur temps les signes du Zodiaque? Ou conduis-tu Arcture avec son cortège?
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
33 Connais-tu les lois des Cieux? Les as-tu mis à même d'influer sur la terre?
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
34 Parles-tu à la nue avec autorité, et te couvre-t-elle aussitôt d'une eau abondante?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Lances-tu des foudres, et partent-elles, et disent-elles: Nous voici?
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
36 Qui a mis une sagesse dans les sombres nuages, et a donné aux météores une intelligence?
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
37 Qui a calculé les nuées avec sagesse? Et qui est-ce qui incline les urnes des Cieux,
Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
38 quand la poussière coule comme un métal en fonte, et que les glèbes se collent l'une à l'autre?
When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
39 Pour la lionne vas-tu chasser une proie? et assouvis-tu la faim des lionceaux,
Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
40 quand ils sont blottis dans leurs repaires, ou dans leurs tanières, tapis en embuscade?
When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
41 Qui est-ce qui procure au corbeau sa pâture, quand ses petits poussent vers Dieu leurs cris, et errent affamés?
Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
