Job 31

1 J'avais fait un pacte avec mes yeux… Comment les eussé-je arrêtés sur une vierge?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; and how should I fix my regard upon a maid?

2 Et quel sort d'en haut Dieu m'eût-il envoyé, et quel lot le Tout-puissant, des lieux suprêmes?

For what would have been [my] portion of God from above, and what the heritage of the Almighty from on high?

3 La ruine n'est-elle pas pour le criminel, et le malheur pour ceux qui font le mal?

Is not calamity for the unrighteous? and misfortune for the workers of iniquity?

4 Ne découvre-t-Il pas mes voies, et ne compte-t-Il pas tous mes pas?

Doth not he see my ways, and number all my steps?

5 Ai-je eu commerce avec le mensonge, et mon pied fut-il prompt à supplanter?

If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot hath hasted to deceit,

6 Que Dieu me pèse à la juste balance, et Il reconnaîtra mon innocence!

(Let me be weighed in an even balance, and God will take knowledge of my blamelessness; )

7 Mes pas ont-ils dévié de la voie, et mon cœur suivit-il l'attrait de mes yeux? Une seule tache est-elle empreinte sur ma main?

If my step have turned out of the way, and my heart followed mine eyes, and if any blot cleaveth to my hands;

8 Alors, que je sème, et qu'un autre moissonne, et que mes rejetons soient extirpés!

Let me sow, and another eat; and let mine offspring be rooted out.

9 Mon cœur pour une femme s'est-il laissé séduire? ai-je été aux aguets à la porte de mon prochain?

If my heart have been enticed unto a woman, so that I laid wait at my neighbour's door,

10 Alors, que ma femme tourne la meule pour un autre, et que d'autres abusent d'elle!

Let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her.

11 Car c'est là un crime, un forfait que les juges doivent punir;

For this is an infamy; yea, it is an iniquity [to be judged by] the judges:

12 oui, c'est un feu qui consume, à détruire, et aurait dans sa racine ruiné tout mon avoir.

For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

13 Ai-je méprisé les droits de mon esclave, et de ma servante, quand ils n'étaient pas d'accord avec moi?

If I have despised the cause of my bondman or of my bondmaid, when they contended with me,

14 Mais que ferais-je, si Dieu se levait? et, s'il me châtiait, que lui répliquerais-je?

What then should I do when God riseth up? and if he visited, what should I answer him?

15 Dans le sein maternel, Celui qui me forma, ne le forma-t-Il pas aussi? et ne nous prépara-t-Il pas dans le sein d'une mère?

Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not One fashion us in the womb?

16 Ai-je rebuté le vœu du pauvre, et fait languir les yeux de la veuve?

If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire, or caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

17 Ai-je mangé mon pain seul, et l'orphelin n'y eut-il point de part?

Or have eaten my morsel alone, so that the fatherless ate not thereof,

18 Non, dès ma jeunesse, j'élevai l'un en père, et dès ma naissance je fus le guide de l'autre.

(For from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have guided the [widow] from my mother's womb; )

19 Ai-je pu voir l'indigent non vêtu, et le pauvre non couvert?

If I have seen any perishing for want of clothing, or any needy without covering;

20 Leurs reins ne me bénissaient-ils pas, et la toison de mes agneaux ne les réchauffait-elle pas?

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs;

21 Ma main a-t-elle menacé l'orphelin, parce que je me voyais soutenu à la Porte?

If I have lifted up my hand against an orphan, because I saw my help in the gate:

22 Alors, que mon épaule se détache de ma nuque, et que mon bras brisé sorte de son emboîture!

[Then] let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone!

23 Mais les vengeances de Dieu sont ma terreur, et devant Sa majesté je deviens impuissant.

For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his excellency I was powerless.

24 Ai-je pris l'or pour mon appui, et ai-je dit au métal: En toi je me confie?

If I have made gold my hope, or said to the fine gold, My confidence!

25 Me suis-je applaudi de la grandeur de mes biens, et des grands gains obtenus par mes mains?

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

26 Ai-je regardé la lumière, quand elle resplendit, et la lune, quand magnifique elle s'avance?

If I beheld the sun when it shone, or the moon walking in brightness,

27 Et mon cœur en secret s'est-il laissé séduire, jusqu'à confier à ma main les baisers de ma bouche?

And my heart have been secretly enticed, so that my mouth kissed my hand:

28 Cela aussi serait un crime que les juges doivent punir, parce que j'aurais menti au Dieu suprême.

This also would be an iniquity for the judge, for I should have denied the God who is above.

29 Étais-je joyeux de la ruine de mon ennemi, transporté de le voir atteint par les revers?

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, and exulted when evil befell him;

30 Mais je ne permettais pas à ma langue de pécher en demandant sa mort dans une imprécation.

(Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse; )

31 Les gens de ma tente ne disaient-ils pas: Montrez-nous qui ne fut pas rassasié à sa table?

If the men of my tent said not, Who shall find one that hath not been satisfied with his meat? —

32 L'étranger ne passait pas la nuit dehors, et j'ouvrais ma porte au voyageur.

The stranger did not lodge without; I opened my doors to the pathway.

33 A l'exemple des hommes ai-je dissimulé mes fautes, enfouissant dans mon sein mes égarements,

If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,

34 parce que je redoutais le peuple assemblé, et que le mépris des tribus me faisait peur à m'ôter la parole, et à m'empêcher de passer ma porte?

Because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and went not out of the door, ...

35 Ah! s'il voulait m'écouter et me dire: Voici ma signature! Si le Tout-puissant voulait répliquer! si j'avais le grief écrit par ma partie!

Oh that I had one to hear me! Behold my signature: let the Almighty answer me! And let mine opponent write an accusation!

36 Oui, je le porterais sur mon épaule, je le ceindrais comme un diadème,

Would I not take it upon my shoulder? I would bind it on to me [as] a crown;

37 j'avouerais chacun de mes pas, comme un prince je L'aborderais. –

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I come near to him.

38 Mon champ réclame-t-il contre moi, et ses sillons en même temps portent-ils plainte?

If my land cry out against me, and its furrows weep together;

39 En ai-je mangé le produit, sans l'avoir payé, et ai-je arraché des soupirs à son maître?

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have tormented to death the souls of its owners:

40 Alors, que la ronce germe au lieu du froment, et l'herbe gourmande à la place de l'orge! Fin des discours de Job.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and tares instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
