Job 22
1 Et Eliphaz de Théman reprit et dit:
Then answered Eliphaz the Themanite, and said,
2 L'homme peut-il en quelque chose être utile à Dieu? Non! c'est à lui seul que le sage est utile.
Can a man be serviceable unto God? Truly the intelligent is serviceable unto himself.
3 Le Tout-puissant a-t-Il un intérêt dans ta justice, et un bénéfice dans l'intégrité de les voies?
Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that thou art righteous? or is it any gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
4 Est-ce par peur de toi qu'il te châtie, et qu'avec toi Il vient en jugement?
Is it out of fear of thee that he will reproach thee? or go with thee into judgment?
5 N'est-ce pas ton crime qui fut énorme, et tes transgressions qui furent infinies?
Is not thy evil great? and no end to thy iniquities?
6 Car tu acceptas de ton frère des gages, sans motif, et tu dépouillas les pauvres de leurs habits;
For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brothers for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7 tu n'offris point d'eau à l'homme altéré, et tu refusas ton pain à l'homme affamé;
Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and from the hungry thou hast withholden bread.
8 le pays était à la merci du violent, et le puissant s'y établissait;
But as for the man of a strong arm, he obtained the land, and the highly honored could dwell therein.
9 tu renvoyais les veuves à vide, et tu laissais briser le bras des orphelins!
Widows hast thou sent away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
10 C'est pourquoi les filets t'enveloppent, et la terreur t'épouvante soudain.
Therefore are snares round about thee, and sudden dread terrifieth thee.
11 Ou bien ne vois-tu pas ces ténèbres, et la masse des eaux qui te submergent?
Or seest thou not the darkness? and the abundance of water which covereth thee?
12 Dieu n'est-Il pas élevé comme le ciel? Regarde le faîte des étoiles! quelle hauteur!
Is not God in the height of heaven? and beholding the highest elevation of the stars, however high they are?
13 Et cependant tu dis: « Qu'est-ce que Dieu sait? A travers l'obscurité peut-Il juger?
But thou sayest, “What doth God know? can he judge behind the darkness?
14 Les nuées lui sont une enveloppe qui l'empêche de voir; c'est la sphère des cieux qu'il parcourt. »
Thick clouds are a covering for him, so that he will not see; and he walketh along on the circle of heaven.”
15 Tu veux dont te tenir sur l'ancienne voie que suivirent ces hommes méchants,
Wilt thou [thus] observe the path of ancient times which the men of injustice have trodden?
16 qui furent retranchés avant le temps, et dont un torrent submergea le séjour,
Who were shrivelled up before their time, whose foundation was flooded away like a river;
17 qui disaient à Dieu: « Retire-toi de nous! et que pourrait nous faire le Tout-puissant? »
Who said unto God, “'Depart from us:” and what wrought the Almighty for them?
18 Cependant Il avait rempli leurs maisons de biens. Loin de moi les principes des méchants!
And yet it was he that filled their houses with good things; but the counsel of the wicked be [still] far from me.
19 Les justes seront témoins, et se réjouiront, et l'innocent se moquera d'eux:
The righteous will see it, and be glad; and the innocent will laugh them to scorn.
20 « Oui, notre adversaire est anéanti, et le feu a dévoré sa magnificence. »
“Is not he destroyed that rose up against us, and hath not the fire consumed what they had left?”
21 Rapproche-toi donc de Lui, et tu seras sain et sauf, et par-là le bonheur te viendra!
Do but become acquainted with him, and be at peace: thereby will happiness come unto thee.
22 Reçois donc l'instruction que Sa bouche te donne, et mets Ses paroles dans ton cœur!
Do but accept instruction from his mouth, and lay up his saying in thy heart.
23 Si tu reviens au Tout-puissant, tu seras rétabli! Bannis l'iniquité de ta tente,
If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, so thou wilt but remove wrong-doing far away from thy tents.
24 et estime comme poussière le métal qui brille, et l'or d'Ophir, comme les cailloux des torrents!
And throw down in the dust precious metals, and [the gold of] Ophir to the stones of the brooks:
25 Alors le Tout-puissant te sera richesse et argent et trésors!
Then will the Almighty be thy precious metal, and brightly-shining silver unto thee.
26 Alors tu auras à te réjouir du Très-haut, et à relever ton visage vers Dieu:
For then wilt thou have in the Almighty thy delight, and thou canst lift up unto God thy face.
27 tu le prieras, et Il t'exaucera, et tu accompliras tes vœux;
Thou wilt make entreaty unto him, and he will hear thee, and thy vows wilt thou pay.
28 si tu prends un parti, il te réussira, et la clarté luira sur ta voie;
And if thou decree a thing, it will be fulfilled unto thee; and upon thy ways the light will shine.
29 et si elle s'affaisse, tu pourras dire: Qu'elle se relève! car Il est secourable à l'homme abattu,
For when men are brought low, thou wilt say, Pride [hath done it]; but those of lowly eyes [God] will help.
30 Il sauvera même le coupable, sauvé en faveur de la pureté de ses mains.
He will even deliver him who is not guiltless: and thou wilt be delivered by the purity of thy hands.
