Job 2
1 Et il arriva, un jour où les Fils de Dieu vinrent se présenter devant l'Éternel, que Satan vint aussi parmi eux se présenter devant l'Éternel.
AGAIN there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.
2 Et l'Éternel dit à Satan: « D'où viens-tu? » « Et Satan répondit à l'Éternel et dit: « De parcourir la terre, et de m'y promener. »
And the Lord said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
3 Et l'Éternel dit à Satan: « As-tu pris garde à mon serviteur Job? Car nul n'est comme lui, sur la terre, homme intègre et droit et craignant Dieu et fuyant le mal; il est encore ferme dans sa piété, et tu m'excites à le perdre gratuitement. »
And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
4 Et Satan répondit à l'Éternel et dit: « Peau pour peau! Mais tout ce que l'homme possède, il le donnera pour sa vie.
And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
5 Or étends donc ta main, et touche à ses os et à sa chair, et tu verras s'il ne te renie pas en face. »
But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
6 Et l'Éternel dit à Satan: « Le voilà entre tes mains! seulement conserve-lui la vie. »
And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.
7 Alors Satan sortit de la présence de l'Éternel, et il frappa Job d'un ulcère malin depuis la plante des pieds jusqu'au sommet de la tête.
So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
8 Et il prit un têt pour se gratter, tandis qu'il était assis sur la cendre.
And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.
9 Et sa femme lui dit: « Tu es encore ferme dans ta piété! » renie Dieu, et meurs! »
Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.
10 Et Job lui dit: « Ainsi que parle une insensée, ainsi parles-tu. Quoi! nous recevons les biens de la main de Dieu, et nous n'en recevrions pas les maux! » Malgré tout cela, Job ne pécha point par ses discours.
But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
11 Et trois amis de Job ouïrent parler de tous ces maux qui lui étaient survenus, et ils vinrent chacun de leur lieu, Eliphaz de Théman, Bildad de Such, et Tsophar de Naama, et ils se concertèrent ensemble pour venir plaindre Job et le consoler.
Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.
12 Et, lorsqu'ils levèrent les yeux de loin, ils ne le reconnurent pas, et élevant la voix, ils pleurèrent, et ils déchirèrent chacun leur manteau, et jetèrent de la poussière au-dessus de leur tête en l'air.
And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.
13 Et ils furent assis avec lui sur la terre, sept jours et sept nuits, et aucun d'eux ne lui disait une parole, car ils voyaient que sa douleur était très grande.
So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
