Job 1
1 Il y avait un homme dans le pays de Uz; Job était son nom, et cet homme était intègre et droit et craignant Dieu et fuyant le mal.
There was a man in the land of 'Uz, Job was his name; And this man was perfect and upright, and fearing God, and eschewing evil.
2 Et il lui était né sept fils et trois filles.
And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3 Et son bétail consistait en sept mille brebis, et trois mille chameaux, et cinq cents paires de bœufs, et cinq cents ânesses, et il avait un domestique nombreux, et cet homme était plus grand que tous les enfants de l'Orient.
And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and he had a very great store of servants: so that this man was greater than all the sons of the east.
4 Or ses fils avaient la coutume de faire un festin dans leur maison chacun son jour; et ils envoyaient et invitaient leurs trois sœurs à manger et boire avec eux.
And his sons used to go and prepare a feast in the house of every one on his day; and they sent and invited their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5 Et, quand le tour des jours du festin était terminé, Job les envoyait chercher, et les purifiait, et se levant matin, il offrait des holocaustes selon le nombre d'eux tous; car, disait Job, peut-être mes fils ont-ils péché et renié Dieu en leur cœur. Ainsi faisait Job en tout temps.
And it happened, when the days of the feast were gone round, that Job sent and sanctified them, and he then rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of all of them; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and have renounced God in their heart. In this manner used Job to do all the time.
6 Et il arriva, un jour où les Fils de Dieu vinrent se présenter devant l'Éternel, que Satan vint aussi parmi eux.
Now it happened on a certain day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, that the Accuser also came in the midst of them.
7 Et l'Éternel dit à Satan: « D'où viens-tu? » Et Satan répondit à l'Éternel et dit: « De parcourir la terre, et de m'y promener. »
Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Whence comest thou? And the Accuser answered the Lord, and said, From roaming over the earth, and from wandering through it.
8 Et l'Éternel dit à Satan: « As-tu pris garde à mon serviteur Job? Car nul n'est comme lui, sur la terre, intègre et droit et craignant Dieu et fuyant le mal. »
Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Hast thou directed thy attention toward my servant Job; for there is none like him on the earth, a man perfect and upright, who feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9 Et Satan répondit à l'Éternel et dit: « Est-ce sans intérêt que Job craint Dieu?
Then answered the Accuser the Lord, and said, Is it for nought that Job feareth God?
10 Ne l'as-tu pas protégé lui et sa maison, et tout ce qui est à lui, de toutes parts? Tu as béni le travail de ses mains, et ses troupeaux se sont répandus dans le pays.
Behold, thou hast indeed placed a fence about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side: the work of his hands hast thou blessed, and his cattle are far spread out in the land.
11 Mais étends donc ta main, et touche tout ce qu'il a, et tu verras s'il ne te renie pas en face. »
But stretch only forth thy hand and touch all that he hath, and [see] whether he will not renounce thee to thy face.
12 Et l'Éternel dit à Satan: « Voici, que tout ce qu'il a, soit en ta main; seulement ne mets point la main sur lui. » Et Satan sortit de la présence de l'Éternel.
Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Behold, all that is his be in thy power; only against himself shalt thou not stretch forth thy hand. The Accuser went thereupon away from the presence of the Lord.
13 Et, le jour où ses fils et ses filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère premier-né,
And it happened on a certain day, when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their first-born brother,
14 il arriva à Job un messager qui lui dit: « Les bœufs étaient à la charrue, et les ânesses paissaient à leurs côtés;
That a messenger came unto Job, and said, The oxen were ploughing, and the she-asses were feeding beside them:
15 alors des Sabéens ont fondu sur eux, et les ont pris, et ont passé les gardiens au fil de l'épée, et seul j'ai pu m'échapper pour te l'annoncer. »
When the Sabeans made an incursion, and took them away, and the young men they slew with the edge of the sword; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
16 Il parlait encore, qu'un autre vint et dit: « Le feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel, et a exercé ses ravages parmi les brebis et les gardiens, et les a dévorés, et seul j'ai pu m'échapper pour te l'annoncer. »
This one was yet speaking, when another came, and said, A fire of God fell from heaven, and burnt among the sheep and the young men, and consumed them; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
17 Il parlait encore, qu'un autre vint et dit: « Des Chaldéens, formés en trois bandes, se sont jetés sur les chameaux, les ont pris, et ont passé les gardiens au fil de l'épée, et seul j'ai pu m'échapper pour te l'annoncer. »
This one was yet speaking, when another came, and said, The Chaldeans posted themselves in three divisions, and made an inroad against the camels, and took them away, and the young men they slew with the edge of the sword; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
18 Il parlait encore, qu'un autre vint et dit: « Tes fils et tes filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère premier-né,
While this one was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their first-born brother:
19 et voici, un grand vent est venu de par delà le désert, et a frappé contre les quatre angles de la maison, et elle s'est écroulée sur les jeunes gens, et ils sont morts, et seul j'ai pu m'échapper pour te l'annoncer. »
When, behold, a violent wind came from the direction of the wilderness, and struck against the four corners of the house, so that it fell upon the young men, and they died; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
20 Alors Job se leva, et déchira son manteau, et se rasa la tête, et tombant contre terre il adora
Then arose Job, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and prostrated himself.
21 et dit: « Nu je suis sorti du sein de ma mère, et nu je retournerai d'où j'ai été tiré: l'Éternel avait donné, l'Éternel a repris; béni soit le nom de l'Éternel! »
And he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; may the name of the Lord be blessed.
22 A tous ces coups Job ne pécha point, et n'attribua point de mal à Dieu.
With all this did Job not sin, and attributed no injustice to God.
