Jérémie 46
1 La parole de l'Éternel qui fut adressée à Jérémie, le prophète, touchant les nations.
The word of the LORD which came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations.
2 Sur l'Egypte, sur l'armée de Pharaon Néco, roi d'Egypte, qui était près du fleuve de l'Euphrate à Carchémis, et que battit Nébucadnézar, roi de Babel, la quatrième année de Jéhojakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda.
Of Egypt: concerning the army of Pharaoh-neco king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah.
3 Apprêtez le bouclier et le pavois, et marchez au combat!
Make ready buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.
4 Attelez les chevaux! et montez-y, cavaliers! prenez vos rangs avec vos casques! nettoyez les lances! endossez la cuirasse!
Harness the horses, and mount, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, put on the coats of mail.
5 Pourquoi les vois-je reculer épouvantés? Leurs héros sont battus, ils fuient sans tourner la tête: terreur de toute part! dit l'Éternel.
Wherefore do I see them dismayed and turned backward? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and they are fled apace, and look not back; terror is on every side, saith the LORD.
6 Point de fuite pour les agiles, point de salut pour les forts; au nord, près de l'Euphrate, ils trébuchent et tombent.
The swift cannot flee away, nor the mighty man escape; in the north by the river Euphrates have they stumbled and fallen.
7 Qui est celui qui s'avance pareil au Nil? comme les torrents ses eaux se meuvent!
Who is this like the Nile that riseth up, like the rivers whose waters toss themselves?
8 L'Égyptien s'avance pareil au Nil, et comme les torrents ses eaux se meuvent, et il dit: Je m'avance, je vais couvrir le pays, ruiner des villes et leurs habitants!
Egypt is like the Nile that riseth up, and like the rivers whose waters toss themselves; and he saith: 'I will rise up, I will cover the earth, I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof.'
9 Coursiers, en avant! chars, roulez avec furie! et que les guerriers paraissent, Éthiopiens et Libyens portant le bouclier, et Lydiens portant et bandant les arcs!
Prance, ye horses, and rush madly, ye chariots; and let the mighty men go forth: Cush and Put, that handle the shield, and the Ludim, that handle and bend the bow.
10 Cette journée est au Seigneur, à l'Éternel des armées, c'est une journée de vengeance pour Le venger de ses ennemis; et l'épée dévore et s'assouvit, et s'enivre de leur sang, car il se fait un sacrifice au Seigneur, à l'Éternel des armées, dans le pays du nord près de l'Euphrate.
For the Lord GOD of hosts shall have on that day a day of vengeance, that He may avenge Him of His adversaries; and the sword shall devour and be satiate, and shall be made drunk with their blood; for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.
11 Monte à Galaad, et y prends du baume, Vierge, fille de l'Egypte! En vain multiplies-tu les remèdes; pour toi il n'y a point de pansement.
Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt; in vain dost thou use many medicines; there is no cure for thee.
12 Les nations entendent parler de ton opprobre, et la terre se remplit de tes cris, car le guerrier sur le guerrier trébuche, et ensemble ils tombent tous les deux.
The nations have heard of thy shame, and the earth is full of thy cry; for the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty, they are fallen both of them together.
13 La parole qu'adressa l'Éternel à Jérémie, le prophète, sur ce que Nébucadnézar, roi de Babel, viendrait pour frapper le pays d'Egypte.
The word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt.
14 Publiez en Egypte, et proclamez à Migdol, et proclamez à Noph, et à Tachphanès! dites: Debout! équipe-toi, car l'épée sévit autour de toi!
Declare ye in Egypt, and announce in Migdol, and announce in Noph and in Tahpanhes; say ye: 'Stand forth, and prepare thee, for the sword hath devoured round about thee.'
15 Pourquoi tes chefs sont-ils terrassés? Ils n'ont pas tenu tête; car l'Éternel les a renversés;
Why is thy strong one overthrown? He stood not, because the LORD did thrust him down.
16 en foule ils trébuchent et tombent l'un sur l'autre, et disent: Levez-vous, et retournons dans notre peuple, et au pays de notre naissance, fuyant la cruelle épée!
He made many to stumble; yea, they fell one upon another, and said: 'Arise, and let us return to our own people, and to the land of our birth, from the oppressing sword.'
17 Là on s'écrie: Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, est perdu! il a laissé passer le moment.
They cried there: 'Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he hath let the appointed time pass by.'
18 Par ma vie, dit le Roi dont l'Éternel des armées est le nom, semblable au Thabor entre les montagnes, et semblable au Carmel au-dessus de la mer, il arrive.
As I live, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts, surely like Tabor among the mountains, and like Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.
19 Prépare-toi pour la captivité, toi qui habites en ces lieux, fille de l'Egypte; car Noph sera saccagée et brûlée, dépeuplée.
O thou daughter that dwellest in Egypt, furnish thyself to go into captivity; for Noph shall become a desolation, and shall be laid waste, without inhabitant.
20 L'Egypte est une génisse superbe; un aiguillon vient du nord, il arrive.
Egypt is a very fair heifer; but the gadfly out of the north is come, it is come.
21 Même les mercenaires qui sont au milieu d'elle, tels que des veaux engraissés, oui, eux aussi, ils tournent le dos; ils fuient de concert, ils ne s'arrêtent pas, car sur eux fond le jour de leur supplice, le temps de leur châtiment.
Also her mercenaries in the midst of her are like calves of the stall, for they also are turned back, they are fled away together, they did not stand; for the day of their calamity is come upon them, the time of their visitation.
22 Sa voix sortira perçante comme celle du serpent, quand en force ils arriveront, et qu'ils marcheront sur elle armés de haches, pareils à des bûcherons.
The sound thereof shall go like the serpent's; for they march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.
23 Ils vont couper sa forêt, dit l'Éternel, car elle est impénétrable, car ils sont plus nombreux que des sauterelles, et on ne peut les compter.
They cut down her forest, saith the LORD, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable.
24 La fille de l'Egypte est honteuse; elle est livrée aux mains d'un peuple du septentrion.
The daughter of Egypt is put to shame; she is delivered into the hand of the people of the north.
25 L'Éternel des armées, Dieu d'Israël, a dit: Voici, je vais châtier Amon de No, et Pharaon, et l'Egypte, et ses dieux et ses rois, Pharaon et ceux qui s'appuient sur lui,
The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saith: Behold, I will punish Amon of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with her gods, and her kings; even Pharaoh, and them that trust in him;
26 et les livrer aux mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, et aux mains de Nébucadnézar, roi de Babel, et aux mains de ses serviteurs; mais dans la suite [l'Egypte] sera habitée comme aux jours d'autrefois, dit l'Éternel.
and I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants; and afterwards it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the LORD.
27 Pour toi, ne crains point, ô mon serviteur Jacob! et ne t'effraie point, Israël! car voici, je te retirerai des pays lointains, et ta race de la contrée où elle est prisonnière; et Jacob reviendra, et il sera tranquille et heureux, sans alarmes.
But fear not thou, O Jacob My servant, neither be dismayed, O Israel; for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall again be quiet and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.
28 Toi, ô mon serviteur Jacob, sois sans peur, dit l'Éternel! car je suis avec toi! quand j'exterminerai toutes les nations où je t'ai disséminé, toi, je ne t'exterminerai point; et je te châtierai, mais avec mesure; car je ne puis te laisser impuni.
Fear not thou, O Jacob My servant, saith the LORD, for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee, but I will not make a full end of thee; and I will correct thee in measure, but will not utterly destroy thee.
