Jérémie 40

1 La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie par l'Éternel, après que Nébuzaradan, chef des satellites, l'eut élargi à Rama. Quand il le fit chercher, il était lié de chaînes parmi tous les prisonniers de Jérusalem et de Juda qu'on déportait à Babel.

The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, had let him go from Ramah. For he had taken him, and he had been bound with chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah which were carried away captive to Babylon.

2 Et le chef des satellites prit Jérémie et lui dit: L'Éternel, ton Dieu, avait annoncé tous ces malheurs à ce lieu-ci,

And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said to him: “Jehovah, thy God, pronounced this evil against this place;

3 et l'Éternel a fait arriver, et a exécuté ainsi qu'il l'avait dit, car vous aviez péché contre l'Éternel, et vous n'aviez point obéi à sa voix, et ces choses vous sont arrivées.

and now Jehovah hath brought it, and done according as he spake, because ye sinned against Jehovah, and obeyed not his voice; therefore hath this thing come upon you.

4 Et maintenant, voici, je te délivre aujourd'hui des fers que tu portes aux mains: s'il t'agrée de venir avec moi à Babel, viens, j'aurai soin de toi; mais s'il te répugne de venir avec moi à Babel, cesse d'y penser; regarde, tu as tout le pays devant toi, va où il te plaira, et où il t'agréera d'aller.

And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains upon thy hands. If it seem good to thee to come with me to Babylon, come; and I will set my eyes upon thee; but if it seem evil to thee to come with me to Babylon, forbear; behold, the whole land is before thee; whither it seemeth good and desirable for thee to go, thither go.”

5 – Et comme il ne s'en allait point encore: Rends-toi donc [ajouta-t-il] auprès de Gédalia, fils d'Achikam, fils de Schaphan, que le roi de Babel a préposé sur les villes de Juda, et reste auprès de lui parmi le peuple; ou bien, va partout où il te conviendra d'aller. Et le chef des satellites lui donna son entretien et un présent, et le congédia.

And while he was not yet gone away [[he said]]: “Go to Gedaliah, the of son Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go whithersoever it seemeth good to thee to go.” And the captain of the guard gave him provisions, and a present, and dismissed him.

6 Et Jérémie se rendit auprès de Gédalia, fils d'Achikam, à Mitspa, et il demeura auprès de lui parmi le peuple laissé dans le pays.

And Jeremiah went to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, to Mizpah, and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

7 Et quand tous les chefs de l'armée qui étaient dans les campagnes apprirent, eux et leurs hommes, que le roi de Babel avait préposé Gédalia, fils d'Achikam, sur le pays, et qu'il lui avait commis les hommes et les femmes, et les enfants et ceux d'entre les petits du pays qui n'avaient pas été déportés à Babel,

Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, governor over the land, and had committed to his charge men and women and children, of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon,

8 alors arrivèrent auprès de Gédalia, à Mitspa, Ismaël, fils de Néthania, et Jochanan et Jonathan, fils de Karéah, et Séraïa, fils de Tanchumeth, et les fils de Ephaï de Nétopha, et Jésanias, fils de Maachati, eux et leurs hommes.

then they came to Gedaliah, to Mizpah; namely, Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan, the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah, the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah, the son of the Maachathite, they and their men;

9 Et Gédalia, fils d'Achikam, fils de Schaphan, leur fit ce serment à eux et à leurs hommes, disant: Ne redoutez point d'être soumis aux Chaldéens! demeurez dans le pays, et soyez soumis au roi de Babel, et vous vous en trouverez bien.

and Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, swore to them and to their men, saying, “Fear not to serve the Chaldaeans; dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

10 Pour moi, voici, je reste à Mitspa, au service des Chaldéens qui viendront auprès de nous; mais vous, faites vos récoltes de vin, de fruits et d'huile, et serrez-les dans vos vases, et habitez vos villes que vous occupez.

As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldaeans, who shall come to us; but ye, gather ye in wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities which ye have taken.”

11 Et tous les Juifs aussi qui étaient chez les Moabites, et chez les Ammonites, et en Édom, et ceux qui étaient dans tous les autres pays apprirent que le roi de Babel avait laissé un reste des Juifs, et préposé sur eux Gédalia, fils d'Achikam, fils de Schaphan;

Also when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant to Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,

12 et tous les Juifs revinrent de tous les lieux où ils étaient disséminés, et arrivèrent dans le pays de Juda auprès de Gédalia à Mitspa, et ils firent d'abondantes récoltes de vin et de fruits.

then all the Jews returned from all the places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, to Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits in abundance.

13 Cependant Jochanan, fils de Karéah, et tous les chefs de l'armée qui étaient dans les campagnes, vinrent auprès de Gédalia, à Mitspa,

And Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah, to Mizpah,

14 et lui dirent: Sais-tu bien que Bahalis, roi des Ammonites, a envoyé Ismaël, fils de Néthania, pour t'ôter la vie? Mais Gédalia, fils d'Achikam, ne les crut pas.

and said to him, “Dost thou know that Baalis, the king of the children of Ammon, hath sent Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, to slay thee?” But Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, believed them not.

15 Et Jochanan, fils de Karéah, parla secrètement à Gédalia à Mitspa, et lui dit: Je veux aller tuer Ismaël, fils de Néthania, et personne ne le saura. Pourquoi t'ôterait-il la vie, et tous les Juifs rassemblés autour de toi seraient-ils dispersés, et le reste de Juda perdu?

And Johanan, the son of Kareah, spake to Gedaliah in private at Mizpah, saying, “Let me go, I pray thee, and smite Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it. Wherefore should he slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered to thee should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish?”

16 Mais Gédalia, fils d'Achikam, dit à Jochanan, fils de Karéah: N'en fais rien! car ce que tu me dis d'Ismaël, est faux.

But Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, said to Johanan, the son of Kareah, “Thou shalt not do this thing, for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.”
