Jérémie 37

1 Et Sédécias, fils de Josias, succéda comme roi à Chonia, fils de Jéhojakim: Nébucadnézar, roi de Babel, l'avait fait roi du pays de Juda.

AND king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

2 Et il n'obéit, non plus que ses serviteurs, ni le peuple du pays, aux paroles que l'Éternel prononça par l'entremise de Jérémie, le prophète.

But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the Lord, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.

3 Et le roi Sédécias envoya Jouchal, fils de Sélémia, et Sophonie, fils de Mahaséïa, le sacrificateur, à Jérémie, le prophète, pour lui dire: Prie pour nous l'Éternel, notre Dieu!

And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the Lord our God for us.

4 Or Jérémie entrait et sortait encore librement parmi le peuple, et on ne l'avait pas encore incarcéré.

Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.

5 Et l'armée de Pharaon était sortie de l'Egypte, et les Chaldéens qui assiégeaient Jérusalem, en ayant appris la nouvelle, s'étaient retirés de Jérusalem.

Then Pharaoh’s army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

6 Alors la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie, le prophète, en ces mots:

Then came the word of the Lord unto the prophet Jeremiah, saying,

7 Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Ainsi parlez au roi de Juda qui vous envoie vers moi pour me consulter: Voici, l'armée de Pharaon qui s'avance à votre secours, retournera dans son pays, en Egypte;

Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to inquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

8 et les Chaldéens reviendront assiéger cette ville, et ils la prendront, et la brûleront par le feu.

And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.

9 Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Ne vous abusez pas vous-mêmes en disant: Les Chaldéens vont s'éloigner de nous! car ils ne s'en iront point.

Thus saith the Lord; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.

10 Car eussiez-vous défait toute l'armée des Chaldéens qui vous assiègent, et ne restât-il d'eux que des hommes percés, ils se lèveront chacun de leur tente, et brûleront cette ville par le feu.

For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

11 Et lorsque l'armée des Chaldéens se retirait de Jérusalem devant l'armée de Pharaon,

And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,

12 Jérémie sortit de Jérusalem, pour se rendre dans le pays de Benjamin, afin d'y recueillir un héritage, au milieu du peuple.

Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.

13 Et il se trouvait dans la porte de Benjamin, et là celui qui en avait l'inspection et dont le nom était Jérija, fils de Sélémia, fils d'Ananias, arrêta Jérémie, le prophète, en disant: Tu passes aux Chaldéens.

And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.

14 Et Jérémie dit: C'est une fausseté! je ne passe point aux Chaldéens. Mais Jérija, sans l'écouter, arrêta Jérémie et le conduisit aux princes.

Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.

15 Et les princes s'irritèrent contre Jérémie, et le frappèrent, et le mirent en prison dans la maison de Jonathan, le scribe; car ils en avaient fait une prison.

Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

16 Et lorsque Jérémie fut venu dans le cachot, et dans les cellules, et qu'il y fut resté longtemps,

When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;

17 le roi Sédécias envoya et le fit chercher. Et le roi l'interrogea dans sa maison en secret et lui dit: Y a-t-il une parole de par l'Éternel? Et Jérémie dit: Il y en a une. Et il dit: Tu seras livré entre les mains du roi de Babel.

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the Lord? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

18 Et Jérémie dit au roi Sédécias: En quoi ai-je péché contre toi ou tes serviteurs ou ce peuple, que vous m'avez mis en prison?

Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?

19 Et où sont vos prophètes qui vous prophétisaient disant: Le roi de Babel ne marchera pas contre vous, ni contre ce pays?

Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

20 Et maintenant, écoute, ô roi, mon Seigneur, je t'en prie, reçois mon humble prière, et ne me fais pas rentrer dans la maison de Jonathan, le scribe, pour que je n'y meure pas!

Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

21 Alors le roi Sédécias ordonna qu'on déposât Jérémie dans le vestibule de la prison, et qu'on lui donnât chaque jour un pain de la rue des boulangers, jusqu'à ce que tout le pain fût consommé dans la ville. Ainsi Jérémie demeura dans le vestibule de la prison.

Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
