Isaïe 28
1 Malheur à la couronne superbe des ivrognes d'Éphraïm, fleur qui passe, leur brillante parure, sise sur une cime dans la vallée fertile de ceux qu'étourdit le vin!
Alas! for the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, And for his fading wreath of majestic beauty, —Which is on the head of the fertile valley, of them who are overcome with wine.
2 Voici venir de par le Seigneur, un fort et puissant ennemi, comme un orage de grêle, un ouragan destructeur, comme une trombe de grosses eaux qui inondent; il va la faire tomber en terre sous ses coups.
Lo! My Lord hath one who is, strong and bold, Like a storm of hail, a destroying tempest, Like a storm of mighty waters overflowing, Hath he thrust it down to the earth with force:
3 Sous les pieds elle va être foulée, la couronne superbe des ivrognes d'Éphraïm;
With the feet shall be trodden down, the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim,
4 et la fleur qui passe, leur parure brillante, sise sur une cime dans la vallée fertile, sera comme avant la récolte la figue primeur; on l'aperçoit; à peine dans la main, elle est avalée.
So shall his fading wreath of majestic beauty, Which is on the head of the fertile valley, become—Like the first-ripe fig before fruit-harvest, Which when he that looketh upon it seeth while it is yet in his hand, he swalloweth it up.
5 En ce même jour, l'Éternel des armées sera une couronne de parure et un diadème brillant pour les restes de son peuple,
In that day, will Yahweh of hosts become A crown of beauty, and A diadem of majesty, —Unto the remnant of his people:
6 et un esprit de jugement pour le juge qui siège, et une force pour ceux qui font rentrer les agresseurs dans leurs portes.
Even a spirit of justice—to him that presideth over justice, And strength to them who would turn back the battle at the gate.
7 Mais ceux-ci aussi sont troublés par le vin, et la cervoise les fait chanceler; prêtres et prophètes sont troublés par la cervoise, subjugués par le vin, la cervoise les fait chanceler; ils sont troublés quand ils prophétisent, égarés quand ils jugent.
But as for these, With wine, do they reel, and With strong drink, do they stagger, —Priest and prophet, reel with strong drink They are swallowed up through wine They stagger through strong drink, They reel in prophetic vision, They totter in pronouncing judgment.
8 Car toutes les tables sont pleines de vomissements et d'ordures; il n'y a plus de place.
For, all tables, are full of filthy vomit, —There is no place!
9 « A qui veut-il enseigner la sagesse et à qui donner des leçons? A des enfants sevrés, ôtés à la mamelle?
Whom, would he teach knowledge? And, whom, would he cause to understand the message? Them who are weaned from the milk? taken from the breasts?
10 Car c'est loi sur loi, loi sur loi, règle sur règle, règle sur règle; un peu ici, un peu là! »
For it is—Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, —A little here a little there.
11 Oui, c'est par des hommes aux lèvres balbutiantes, et en langue étrangère, qu'il parlera à ce peuple
For, with a jabbering lip, and with an alien tongue, must he speak unto this people!
12 auquel Il disait: « C'est ici le lieu du repos; procurez du repos au peuple fatigué; c'est ici le lieu du relâche; » mais ils ne voulurent point écouter.
To whom he said—This, is the rest—give ye rest to the weary, and This, is the quietness, —But they were unwilling to hear.
13 Et pour eux la parole de l'Éternel sera: « Loi sur loi, loi sur loi, règle sur règle, règle sur règle, un peu ici, un peu là, » afin qu'ils aillent et qu'ils tombent à la renverse, et qu'ils se brisent, et qu'ils s'enlacent, et qu'ils se prennent.
So the word of Yahweh must be to them—Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, A little here, a little there, —That they may go and fall backward and be torn and snared and captured.
14 Aussi, écoutez la parole de l'Éternel, moqueurs, dominateurs de ce peuple qui est dans Jérusalem!
Wherefore, hear ye the word of Yahweh, Ye men who scoff, —Ye rulers of this people that is in Jerusalem.
15 Parce que vous dites: « Nous avons fait un pacte avec la mort, et avec l'Enfer un compromis, la verge de l'inondation à son passage ne nous atteindra pas, car nous prenons le mensonge pour asile et la fraude pour abri; » (Sheol h7585)
Because ye have said—We have solemnised a covenant with death, And with hades, have we effected a vision, —The overflowing scourge when it sweepeth by, shall not reach unto us, For we have made lying our refuge. And in falsehood, have we hid ourselves, (Sheol h7585)
16 c'est pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: C'est moi qui ai mis en Sion pour fondement une pierre, pierre éprouvée, pierre angulaire de prix, fondement bien fondé; qui s'y fie, n'aura pas à fuir;
Therefore, Thus, saith My Lord, Yahweh, Behold me! founding in Zion a stone, A stone of testing, The costly corner of a well-laid foundation, he that trusteth, shall not make haste!
17 et je ferai du bon droit le cordeau et de la justice la balance, et la grêle détruira l'asile du mensonge, et l'abri sera submergé par les eaux.
But I will make—Justice the line, and Righteousness the plummet, —And the hail shall, sweep away, your refuge of lying, And your hiding-place, the waters shall overflow;
18 Et votre pacte avec la mort sera déjoué, et votre compromis avec l'Enfer sera sans effet, par la verge de l'inondation à son passage vous serez écrasés. (Sheol h7585)
So shall be wiped out your covenant with death, And your vision with hades, not stand, —When the overflowing scourge, sweepeth past, then shall ye be thereby beaten down: (Sheol h7585)
19 Toujours à son passage elle vous saisira; car chaque matin elle passera, le jour et la nuit, c'est une terreur seulement d'en entendre le bruit.
As often as it sweepeth past, it shall take you away, For morning by morning, shall it pass along. By day and by night, —And it shall be nothing less than a terror to make out the message;
20 Oui, le lit sera trop court pour s'y étendre, et la couverture trop étroite pour s'en envelopper.
For too short is the couch to stretch oneself out, —And, the coverlet, too narrow, when one draweth up his feet.
21 Car, comme au mont Peratsim, l'Éternel se lèvera, comme dans la vallée de Gabaon Il se courroucera, pour exécuter son œuvre, son œuvre étrange, et pour faire son travail, son travail inouï.
For as in Mount Perazim, will Yahweh, arise, As in the vale of Gibeon, will he be stirred, —To do his work—foreign is his work, And to perform his task—strange is his task.
22 Et maintenant, ne vous moquez point, de peur que vos chaînes ne se serrent! car j'ai appris de l'Éternel des armées que la ruine de toute la terre est décidée.
Now, therefore do not show yourselves scoffers, Lest your fetters, be bound fast, —For, of a full end, and that a decreed one, have I heard from My Lord, Yahweh of hosts upon all the land
23 Prêtez l'oreille et entendez ma voix! écoutez et entendez ma parole!
Give ear, and hear ye my voice, —Hearken, and hear ye my speech: —
24 Le laboureur laboure-t-il sans cesser pour semer? il ouvre aussi et herse son sol:
All day long, doth the plowman plow for sowing? Doth he continue laying open and harrowing his soil?
25 en a-t-il aplani la surface, il y sème de l'anet et y répand du cumin; il plante le froment par rangées, et l'orge à une place fixe, et l'épeautre sur ses bords.
Doth he not when he hath levelled the face thereof, Cast abroad the fennel? And, the cummin, doth he not scatter? And plant wheat in rows, And barley in a lot, And spelt in the border thereof?
26 Son Dieu lui enseigna la manière, et Il l'instruisit.
Yea One hath trained him to good judgment, His God, directeth him.
27 Car ce n'est pas non plus avec le traîneau qu'on foule l'anet, et le madrier avec ses roues ne passe pas sur le cumin; mais l'anet est battu avec le bâton, et le cumin avec la perche.
For not with a sledge, must, black coriander be threshed, Nor must, the wheel of a cart, on cummin, be turned, But with a staff, must fennel be beaten, And cummin with a rod:
28 Le blé est battu, mais il ne le bat pas sans fin; il y fait passer les roues de son chariot et ses chevaux, il ne l'écrase pas.
Bread-corn, must be crushed, —Yet would he not be evermore, threshing, it, So he hasteneth over it the wheel of his cart, with his horsemen, He crusheth it not!
29 Cela aussi procède de l'Éternel des armées: admirable est son conseil, et grande sa sagesse.
Even this, from Yahweh of hosts, cometh forth, —Who hath bestowed distinction upon counsel, And magnified sound wisdom.
