Genèse 4
1 Et Adam connut Ève, sa femme, et elle conçut et enfanta Caïn, et elle dit: J'ai gagné un homme avec l'aide de l'Éternel.
Afterward the man knew Heuah his wife, which conceiued and bare Kain, and said, I haue obteined a man by the Lord.
2 Puis elle enfanta encore son frère Abel. Et Abel fut pasteur de brebis, et Caïn agriculteur.
And againe she brought foorth his brother Habel, and Habel was a keeper of sheepe, and Kain was a tiller of the ground.
3 Et au bout d'un certain temps Caïn offrit à l'Éternel une oblation de fruits de la terre.
And in processe of time it came to passe, that Kain brought an oblation vnto the Lord of the fruite of the ground.
4 Et Abel offrit lui aussi des premiers-nés de ses troupeaux et de leur graisse. Et l'Éternel arrêta ses regards sur Abel et sur son offrande;
And Habel also him selfe brought of the first fruites of his sheepe, and of the fat of them, and the Lord had respect vnto Habel, and to his offering,
5 mais il n'arrêta point ses regards sur Caïn et son offrande. Et Caïn fut très irrité, et il avait le visage abattu.
But vnto Kain and to his offering he had no regarde: wherefore Kain was exceeding wroth, and his countenance fell downe.
6 Alors l'Éternel dit à Caïn: Pourquoi t'irrites-tu et as-tu le visage abattu? N'est-ce pas?
Then ye Lord said vnto Kain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance cast downe?
7 Si tu fais bien, tu as la tête levée, mais si tu ne fais pas bien, le péché se rase à la porte, et ses désirs sont tendus vers toi; mais tu dois le dominer.
If thou do well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sinne lieth at the doore: also vnto thee his desire shalbe subiect, and thou shalt rule ouer him.
8 Et Caïn parla à son frère Abel, et il arriva que, comme ils étaient aux champs, Caïn se dressa contre son frère Abel et le tua.
Then Kain spake to Habel his brother. And when they were in the fielde, Kain rose vp against Habel his brother, and slewe him.
9 Alors l'Éternel dit à Caïn: Où est Abel, ton frère? Et il répondit: Je ne sais pas: suis-je le gardien de mon frère?
Then the Lord said vnto Kain, Where is Habel thy brother? Who answered, I cannot tell. Am I my brothers keeper?
10 Et Dieu: Qu'as-tu fait? La voix du sang de ton frère crie de la terre jusqu'à moi.
Againe he said, What hast thou done? the voyce of thy brothers blood cryeth vnto me from the earth.
11 Dès-là sois maudit de la terre qui a ouvert sa bouche pour recevoir de ta main le sang de ton frère.
Now therefore thou art cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receiue thy brothers blood from thine hand.
12 Quand tu travailleras le sol, il ne t'accordera plus sa vertu; tu seras errant et vagabond sur la terre.
When thou shalt till the grounde, it shall not henceforth yeelde vnto thee her strength: a vagabond and a runnagate shalt thou be in the earth.
13 Et Caïn dit à l'Éternel: Ma peine est trop grande pour la supporter.
Then Kain said to the Lord, My punishment is greater, then I can beare.
14 Voici, tu m'as banni en ce jour de la contrée, et loin de ta face il faut me cacher, et je me trouve errant et vagabond sur la terre, et quiconque me trouvera me tuera.
Behold, thou hast cast me out this day from the earth, and from thy face shall I be hid, and shalbe a vagabond, and a runnagate in the earth, and whosoeuer findeth me, shall slay me.
15 Et l'Éternel lui dit: Aussi, qui que ce soit qui tue Caïn, il sera vengé sept fois. Et l'Éternel assura Caïn par un signe que quiconque le trouverait, ne le tuerait point.
Then the Lord said vnto him, Doubtlesse whosoeuer slayeth Kain, he shalbe punished seue folde. And the Lord set a marke vpon Kain, lest any man finding him should kill him.
16 Et Caïn sortit de la présence de l'Éternel et séjourna dans la région de Nod (exil) à l'orient d'Eden.
Then Kain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod towarde the Eastside of Eden.
17 Et Caïn connut sa femme, et elle devint enceinte et enfanta Henoch. Et il bâtit une ville qu'il nomma du nom de son fils Henoch.
Kain also knewe his wife, which conceiued and bare Henoch: and he built a citie, and called the name of the citie by ye name of his sonne, Henoch.
18 Et à Henoch naquit Hirad, et Hirad engendra Mahujaël, et Mahujaël engendra Methusaël, et Methusaël engendra Lémech.
And to Henoch was borne Irad, and Irad begate Mehuiael, and Mehuiael begate Methushael, and Methushael begate Lamech.
19 Et Lémech prit deux femmes: le nom de l'une était Hada et le nom de l'autre Tsilla.
And Lamech tooke him two wiues: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
20 Et Hada enfanta Jabal: c'est lui qui fut le père de ceux qui vivent sous des tentes et avec des troupeaux.
And Adah bare Iabal, who was the father of such as dwell in the tents, and of such as haue cattell.
21 Et le nom de son frère était Jubal: c'est lui qui fut le père de tous ceux qui jouent du luth et de la cornemuse.
And his brothers name was Iubal, who was the father of all that play on the harpe and organes.
22 Et Tsilla de son côté enfanta Thubal-Caïn qui forgeait tous les instruments d'airain et de fer. Et la sœur de Thubal-Caïn était Nahuma.
And Zillah also bare Tubal-kain, who wrought cunningly euery craft of brasse and of yron: and the sister of Tubal-kain was Naamah.
23 Et Lémech dit à ses femmes: Hada et Tsilla, entendez ma voix, Femmes de Lémech, écoutez ma parole! C'est que je tue l'homme qui me fait une blessure, Et le jeune homme qui me fait une piqûre!
Then Lamech saide vnto his wiues Adah and Zillah, Heare my voyce, ye wiues of Lamech: hearken vnto my speach: for I would slay a man in my wound, and a yong man in mine hurt.
24 C'est que, sept fois Caïn a-t-il été vengé, Soixante-dix-sept fois Lémech saura l'être.
If Kain shalbe auenged seuen folde, truely Lamech, seuentie times seuen folde.
25 Et Adam connut encore sa femme, et elle enfanta un fils, et elle lui donna le nom de Seth (remplaçant) « car Dieu m'a constitué une autre postérité en place d'Abel, parce que Caïn lui a donné la mort. »
And Adam knewe his wife againe, and she bare a sonne, and she called his name Sheth: for God, saide she, hath appointed me another seede for Habel, because Kain slewe him.
26 Et il naquit aussi un fils à Seth, et il l'appela du nom de Enos. C'est alors que l'on commença à invoquer le nom de l'Éternel.
And to ye same Sheth also there was borne a sonne, and he called his name Enosh. Then beganne men to call vpon the name of the Lord.
