Genèse 30

1 Et Rachel voyant qu'elle ne donnait point d'enfants à Jacob, elle fut jalouse de sa sœur, et elle dit à Jacob: Procure-moi des enfants! sinon, je meurs!

And Rachel seeth that she hath not borne to Jacob, and Rachel is envious of her sister, and saith unto Jacob, 'Give me sons, and if there is none — I die.'

2 Et Jacob s'irrita contre Rachel et dit: Ne suis-je pas aussi sous la dépendance de Dieu qui t'a refusé le fruit d'un sein fécond?

And Jacob's anger burneth against Rachel, and he saith, 'Am I in stead of God who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?'

3 Et elle dit: Voici ma servante Bilha, habite avec elle afin que je reçoive sur mes genoux ce qui naîtra d'elle, et que par elle moi aussi je me fasse une maison.

And she saith, 'Lo, my handmaid Bilhah, go in unto her, and she doth bear on my knees, and I am built up, even I, from her;'

4 Et elle lui donna Bilha, sa servante, pour femme, et Jacob habita avec elle.

and she giveth to him Bilhah her maid-servant for a wife, and Jacob goeth in unto her;

5 Et Bilha devint enceinte et enfanta à Jacob un fils.

and Bilhah conceiveth, and beareth to Jacob a son,

6 Alors Rachel dit: Dieu a été mon arbitre et a aussi écouté ma voix et m'a donné un fils. C'est pourquoi elle l'appela du nom de Dan (arbitre).

and Rachel saith, 'God hath decided for me, and also hath hearkened to my voice, and giveth to me a son;' therefore hath she called his name Dan.

7 Et Bilha, servante de Rachel, devint encore enceinte et enfanta à Jacob un second fils.

And Bilhah, Rachel's maid-servant, conceiveth again, and beareth a second son to Jacob,

8 Alors Rachel dit: J'ai soutenu avec ma sœur des luttes de Dieu, et je l'ai emporté. Et elle l'appela du nom de Nephthali (ma lutte).

and Rachel saith, 'With wrestlings of God I have wrestled with my sister, yea, I have prevailed;' and she calleth his name Napthali.

9 Et Léa, voyant qu'elle cessait d'avoir des enfants, prit Zilpa, sa servante, et la donna à Jacob pour femme.

And Leah seeth that she hath ceased from bearing, and she taketh Zilpah her maid-servant, and giveth her to Jacob for a wife;

10 Et Zilpa, servante de Léa, enfanta à Jacob un fils.

and Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant, beareth to Jacob a son,

11 Alors Léa dit: Avec bonheur! Et elle l'appela du nom de Gad (bonne étoile).

and Leah saith, 'A troop is coming;' and she calleth his name Gad.

12 Et Zilpa, servante de Léa, enfanta à Jacob un second fils.

And Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant, beareth a second son to Jacob,

13 Alors Léa dit: A ma félicité! Car les filles des hommes me féliciteront. Et elle l'appela du nom d'Asser (l'heureux).

and Leah saith, 'Because of my happiness, for daughters have pronounced me happy;' and she calleth his name Asher.

14 Et Ruben sortit au temps de la moisson des blés, et trouva des mandragores dans les champs, et il les apporta à Léa, sa mère. Alors Rachel dit à Léa: Donne-moi donc des mandragores de ton fils!

And Reuben goeth in the days of wheat-harvest, and findeth love-apples in the field, and bringeth them in unto Leah, his mother, and Rachel saith unto Leah, 'Give to me, I pray thee, of the love-apples of thy son.'

15 Et Léa lui répondit: Est-ce si peu de m'avoir pris mon mari, que tu veux aussi prendre les mandragores de mon fils? Et Rachel dit: Eh bien! il couchera avec toi cette nuit pour les mandragores de ton fils.

And she saith to her, 'Is thy taking my husband a little thing, that thou hast taken also the love-apples of my son?' and Rachel saith, 'Therefore doth he lie with thee to-night, for thy son's love-apples.'

16 Et comme Jacob revenait des champs le soir, Léa sortit à sa rencontre et lui dit: Tu t'approcheras de moi, car je t'ai retenu en cédant les mandragores de mon fils. Et il coucha avec elle cette nuit-là.

And Jacob cometh in from the field at evening; and Leah goeth to meet him, and saith, 'Unto me dost thou come in, for hiring I have hired thee with my son's love-apples;' and he lieth with her during that night.

17 Et Dieu exauça Léa, et elle devint enceinte, et enfanta à Jacob un cinquième fils.

And God hearkeneth unto Leah, and she conceiveth, and beareth to Jacob a son, a fifth,

18 Alors Léa dit: Dieu ma donné mon salaire, pour avoir donné ma servante à mon mari. Et elle l'appela du nom de Issaschar (c'est le salaire).

and Leah saith, 'God hath given my hire, because I have given my maid-servant to my husband;' and she calleth his name Issachar.

19 Et Léa devint encore enceinte et enfanta à Jacob un sixième fils.

And conceive again doth Leah, and she beareth a sixth son to Jacob,

20 Alors Léa dit: Dieu m'a fait un beau don; maintenant mon mari demeurera avec moi, puisque je lui ai enfanté six fils. Et elle l'appela du nom de Zabulon (demeure).

and Leah saith, 'God hath endowed me — a good dowry; this time doth my husband dwell with me, for I have borne to him six sons;' and she calleth his name Zebulun;

21 Et ensuite elle enfanta une fille et l'appela du nom de Dina.

and afterwards hath she born a daughter, and calleth her name Dinah.

22 Et Dieu se souvint de Rachel et l'exauça et la rendit féconde.

And God remembereth Rachel, and God hearkeneth unto her, and openeth her womb,

23 Et elle devint enceinte et enfanta un fils et dit: Dieu a enlevé mon opprobre.

and she conceiveth and beareth a son, and saith, 'God hath gathered up my reproach;'

24 Et elle l'appela du nom de Joseph (il enlève) et dit: Que Dieu ajoute en ma faveur un autre fils!

and she calleth his name Joseph, saying, 'Jehovah is adding to me another son.'

25 Et lorsque Rachel eut enfanté Joseph, Jacob dit à Laban: Donne-moi mon congé, pour que je puisse m'en aller chez moi et dans mon pays.

And it cometh to pass, when Rachel hath borne Joseph, that Jacob saith unto Laban, 'Send me away, and I go unto my place, and to my land;

26 Donne-moi mes femmes et mes enfants pour lesquels je t'ai servi, afin que je parte; car tu connais mon service que j'ai accompli pour toi.

give up my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and I go; for thou — thou hast known my service which I have served thee.'

27 Laban lui dit: Ah! si j'avais trouvé grâce à tes yeux… J'avais bien auguré que l'Éternel me bénirait par ton moyen.

And Laban saith unto him, 'If, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes — I have observed diligently that Jehovah doth bless me for thy sake.'

28 Et il dit: Fixe le salaire que je te devrai, et je te le paierai.

He saith also, 'Define thy hire to me, and I give.'

29 Et [Jacob] lui dit: Tu sais comment je t'ai servi, et ce que ton troupeau est devenu avec moi.

And he saith unto him, 'Thou — thou hast known that which I have served thee [in], and that which thy substance was with me;

30 Car ce que tu avais avant moi était peu de chose, et il y a eu accroissement considérable, et l'Éternel envoyait chez toi la bénédiction sur mes pas; et maintenant, quand travaillerai-je aussi pour ma maison?

for [it is] little which thou hast had at my appearance, and it breaketh forth into a multitude, and Jehovah blesseth thee at my coming; and now, when do I make, I also, for mine own house?'

31 Et [Laban] dit: Que dois-je te donner? Et Jacob répondit: Tu ne me donneras rien; mais si tu veux me traiter à ces conditions-ci, je reprendrai la conduite et la garde de tes brebis:

And he saith, 'What do I give to thee?' And Jacob saith, 'Thou dost not give me anything; if thou do for me this thing, I turn back; I have delight; thy flock I watch;

32 aujourd'hui je parcourrai tout ton troupeau, mettant à part parmi les brebis toutes les pièces marquetées et tachetées, et toutes les brunes, et parmi les chèvres toutes celles qui sont tachetées et marquetées; et ce sera là mon salaire.

I pass through all thy flock to-day to turn aside from thence every sheep speckled and spotted, and every brown sheep among the lambs, and speckled and spotted among the goats — and it hath been my hire;

33 Et ma droiture répondra pour moi demain, quand tu en viendras à mon salaire: toutes les chèvres qui ne seront pas tachetées et marquetées, et toutes les brebis qui ne seront pas brunes, seront un vol chez moi.

and my righteousness hath answered for me in the day to come, when it cometh in for my hire before thy face; — every one which is not speckled and spotted among [my] goats, and brown among [my] lambs — it is stolen with me.'

34 Et Laban dit: Eh bien! qu'il en soit comme tu le dis.

And Laban saith, 'Lo, O that it were according to thy word;'

35 Et le jour même il mit à part les boucs bigarrés et tachetés, et toutes les chèvres marquetées et tachetées, toutes celles où il y avait du blanc, et tout ce qu'il y avait de brebis noires, et il les remit aux soins de ses fils.

and he turneth aside during that day the ring-streaked and the spotted he-goats, and all the speckled and the spotted she-goats, every one that [hath] white in it, and every brown one among the lambs, and he giveth into the hand of his sons,

36 Et il mit un espace de trois journées de marche entre lui et Jacob, et Jacob eut la conduite du reste du troupeau de Laban.

and setteth a journey of three days between himself and Jacob; and Jacob is feeding the rest of the flock of Laban.

37 Alors Jacob se pourvut de baguettes fraîches de peuplier blanc, d'amandier et d'érable, et il y pela des bandes blanches, en mettant à nu le blanc du bois.

And Jacob taketh to himself a rod of fresh poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut, and doth peel in them white peelings, making bare the white that [is] on the rods,

38 Puis il plaça les verges qu'il avait ainsi écorcées, dans les auges, les abreuvoirs où les brebis venaient boire les unes vis-à-vis des autres. Et elles s'accouplaient lorsqu'elles venaient boire.

and setteth up the rods which he hath peeled in the gutters in the watering troughs (when the flock cometh in to drink), over-against the flock, that they may conceive in their coming in to drink;

39 Et les brebis s'accouplaient tournées vers les baguettes, et elles mettaient bas des portées bigarrées, tachetées et marquetées.

and the flocks conceive at the rods, and the flock beareth ring-streaked, speckled, and spotted ones.

40 Et Jacob mettait à part les agneaux bigarrés, et il faisait que les brebis eussent en vue les bigarrées et toutes les brunes appartenant au troupeau de Laban, et il se formait des troupeaux séparés qu'il ne joignait point au troupeau de Laban.

And the lambs hath Jacob parted, and he putteth the face of the flock towards the ring-streaked, also all the brown in the flock of Laban, and he setteth his own droves by themselves, and hath not set them near Laban's flock.

41 Et toutes les fois que les moutons vigoureux s'accouplaient, Jacob plaçait les verges devant les yeux des brebis dans les auges, pour que l'accouplement se fit en face des baguettes;

And it hath come to pass whenever the strong ones of the flock conceive, that Jacob set the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, to cause them to conceive by the rods,

42 mais quand les brebis étaient débiles, il ne les plaçait pas; et ainsi les débiles allaient à Laban et les vigoureuses à Jacob.

and when the flock is feeble, he doth not set [them]; and the feeble ones have been Laban's, and the strong ones Jacob's.

43 Et Jacob s'accrut de plus en plus, et il acquit un grand nombre de brebis et de servantes et de serviteurs et de chameaux et d'ânes.

And the man increaseth very exceedingly, and hath many flocks, and maid-servants, and men-servants, and camels, and asses.
