Esdras 10

1 Et comme Esdras priait et faisait la confession, pleurant et prosterné devant la Maison de Dieu, il se forma vers lui une assemblée très nombreuse d'Israélites, hommes, femmes et enfants; car le peuple versait d'abondantes larmes.

Now, when Ezra had prayed and when he had made confession, weeping and casting himself down, before the house of God, there gathered unto him out of Israel, an exceeding large convocation—men and women and children, for the people wept with a very bitter weeping.

2 Alors prit la parole Sechania, fils de Jehiel, des fils d'Eilam, et il dit à Esdras: Nous avons forfait contre notre Dieu en épousant des femmes étrangères des peuples de la terre, néanmoins il y a encore espoir pour Israël à cet égard.

Then responded Shecaniah son of Jehiel of the sons of Elam, and said unto Ezra, We, have been faithful with our God, and have married foreign women from among the peoples of the land, —yet, now, there is hope for Israel concerning this thing.

3 A présent nous voulons faire un pacte avec notre Dieu pour le renvoi de toutes ces femmes et de ce qui est né d'elles, — sur le conseil de monseigneur [Esdras] et de ceux qui révèrent les commandements de notre Dieu, afin qu'il soit fait selon la Loi.

Now, therefore, let us solemnize a covenant unto our God—to put away all the women and such as have been born of them, in the counsel of my lord, and them who tremble at the commandment of our God, —and, according to the law, let it be done.

4 Lève-toi! à toi l'affaire! et nous serons de ton côté. Courage! et agis!

Arise, for, upon thee, resteth the thing, but, we, are with thee, —be strong, and act.

5 Alors Esdras se leva et fit jurer aux chefs des Prêtres, des Lévites et de tout Israël d'agir dans ce sens. Et ils prêtèrent le serment.

Then arose Ezra and made the rulers of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, swear to do according to this word—and they sware.

6 Et Esdras se leva de devant la Maison de Dieu, et se rendit dans la cellule de Jochanan, fils d'Eliasib, et il y alla et ne mangea point de pain et ne but point d'eau, parce qu'il était en deuil à cause du forfait des captifs.

Then arose Ezra from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib, —and, when he came thither, bread, did he not eat, and, water, did he not drink, for he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of them of the Exile.

7 Et ils firent circuler en Juda et à Jérusalem la citation pour tous les fils de la captivité de se rassembler à Jérusalem.

Then made they a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem, unto all the Sons of the Exile, to gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;

8 Quant à celui qui ne paraîtrait pas dans l'espace de trois jours, selon le conseil des chefs et des Anciens, tous ses biens seraient confisqués et lui-même éliminé du corps des captifs.

and, whosoever should not come within three days, according to the counsel of the rulers and the elders, all his goods should be devoted, —and, himself, be separated from the convocation of them of the Exile.

9 Alors tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans l'espace de trois jours: c'était le neuvième mois, le vingtième du mois. Et tout le peuple prit séance dans la place de la Maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de la question et à cause des pluies.

Then were gathered together all the men of Judah and Benjamin unto Jerusalem, within three days, the same, was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month, —and all the people remained in the broadway of the house of God, trembling concerning the thing, and because of the heavy rains.

10 Alors Esdras, le Prêtre, se leva et leur dit: Vous avez forfait en épousant des femmes étrangères, et avez ainsi ajouté à la culpabilité d'Israël.

Then arose Ezra the priest, and said unto them, Ye, have acted unfaithfully, and have married foreign women, —to add unto the guilt of Israel.

11 Faites donc votre confession à l'Éternel, Dieu de vos pères, et exécutez sa volonté en vous séparant des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères.

Now, therefore, make confession unto Yahweh God of your fathers, and do his pleasure, —and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign women.

12 Et toute l'Assemblée répondit et dit à voix forte: Oui, c'est comme tu nous le dis que nous devons agir!

Then responded all the convocation and said, with a loud voice, —Thus, according to thy word concerning us, must it be done.

13 Mais le peuple est nombreux, et c'est la saison des pluies, et il n'y a pas moyen de rester en plein air, et ce n'est pas l'affaire d'un ni de deux jours; car nous avons abondamment manqué à cet égard.

Nevertheless, the people, are many, and, the season, is that of the heavy rains, and we are not able to stand outside, —and, the business, is not one for a single day, nor yet for two, for we have abundantly transgressed, in this thing.

14 Que nos chefs soient donc les représentants de toute l'Assemblée; et tous ceux qui dans nos villes ont épousé des femmes étrangères, pourront venir à époques fixes, et avec eux les Anciens de chaque ville et ses Juges, jusqu'à ce que l'on ait détourné de nous la colère de notre Dieu, allumée pour cette raison.

Let, we beseech thee, our rulers take up their station for all the convocation, and, all who, throughout our cities, have married foreign women, let them come in at times appointed, and, with them, the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the glow of the anger of our God be turned from us, concerning this matter.

15 Cependant Jonathan, fils de Hasahel, et Jahezia, fils de Thicva, firent opposition, et Mesullam et Sabthaï, le Lévite, les appuyèrent.

Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, made a stand against this, —and, Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite, helped them.

16 Mais les fils de la captivité suivirent ce mode. Et l'on choisit Esdras, le Prêtre, et quelques-uns des chefs des maisons patriarcales, tous désignés par leurs noms.

But the Sons of the Exile, did thus, and Ezra the priest separated to himself certain men—ancestral heads by their ancestral houses, and all of them by name, —and they took their seats on the first day of the tenth month to search into the matter;

17 Et ils siégèrent le premier jour du dixième mois pour connaître de l'affaire. Et ils en finirent avec tous les hommes qui avaient épousé des femmes étrangères, le premier jour du premier mois.

and they made an end with all the men who had married foreign women, —by the first day of the first month.

18 Et parmi les fils de Prêtres qui avaient épousé des femmes étrangères, se trouvèrent des fils de Jésuah, fils de Jotsadac, et de ses frères, Mahaseïa et Éliézer et Jarib et Gedalia;

Now there were found, of the sons of the priests, who had married foreign women, —of the sons of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and his brethren, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah;

19 et en donnant leur main ils s'engagèrent à renvoyer leurs femmes, et à offrir un bélier en sacrifice expiatoire pour leur faute;

and they gave their hand, that they would put away their wives, —and, being guilty, [they offered] a ram of the flock for their guilt.

20 et des fils de Immer: Hanani et Zebadia;

And, of the sons of Immer, Hanani, and Zebadiah.

21 et des fils de Harim: Mahaseïa et Elia et Semaïa et Jehiel et Uzzia;

And, of the sons of Harim, Maaseiah and Elijah and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.

22 et des fils de Paschur: Elioénaï, Mahaseïa, Ismaël, Nathanaël, Jozabad et Eleasa;

And, of the sons of Passhur, Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasar.

23 et des Lévites: Jozabad et Siméï et Kelaïa (c'est Kelita), Pethahia, Juda et Eliézer;

And, of the Levites, Jozabad and Shimei, and Kelaiah, the same, is Kelita, Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 et des Chantres: Eliasib; et des Portiers: Sallum et Télem et Uri;

And, of the singers, Eliashib. And, of the doorkeepers, Shallum and Telem and Uri.

25 et d'Israël, des fils de Paréos: Ramia et Jizzia et Malchiia et Mijamin et Eléazar et Malchiia et Benaïa;

And, of Israel, of the sons of Parosh, Ramiah and Izziah and Malchijah and Mijamin and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

26 et des fils d'Eilam: Matthania, Zacharie et Jehiel et Abdi et Jerémoth et Elia;

And, of the sons of Elam, Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah.

27 et des fils de Zatthu: Elioénaï, Eliasib, Matthania et Jerémoth et Zabad et Aziza;

And, of the sons of Zattu, Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

28 et des fils de Bébaï: Jochanan, Hanania, Zabbaï, Athlaï;

And, of the sons of Bebai, Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai.

29 et des fils de Bani: Mesullam, Malluch et Adaïa, Jasub et Seal, Jeramoth;

And, of the sons of Bani, Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, Jeremoth.

30 et des fils de Pachath-Moab: Adna et Chelal, Benaïa, Mahaseïa, Matthania, Betsaleël et Binnuï et Manassé;

And, of the sons of Pahath-moab, Adna and Chelal, —Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.

31 et des fils de Harim: Eliézer, Jissia, Malchia, Semaïa, Siméon,

And, [of] the sons of Harim, Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon;

32 Benjamin, Malluch, Semaria;

Benjamin, Malluch, Shemariah.

33 des fils de Chasum: Mathnaï, Matthattha, Zabad, Eliphéleth, Jerémaï, Manassé, Siméï;

Of the sons of Hashum, Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, —Jeremai, Manasseh, Shimei.

34 des fils de Bani: Maëdaï, Amram et Uel,

Of the sons of Bani, Maadai, Amram, and Uel;

35 Benaïa, Bédia, Cheluhi;

Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluhu;

36 et Naïa, Merémoth, Eliasib,

Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib;

37 Matthania, Matthnaï et Jaësaï,

Mettaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasu;

38 et Bani et Binnuï, Siméï

and Bani, and Binnui, Shimei;

39 et Sélémia et Nathan et Adaïa,

and Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah;

40 Machnadbaï, Sasaï, Saraï,

Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai;

41 Azareël et Sélémia, Semaria,

Azarel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah;

42 Sallum, Amaria, Joseph;

Shallum, Amariah, Joseph.

43 des fils de Nebo: Jehiel, Matthithia, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddaï et Joël, Benaïa.

Of the sons of Nebo, Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, —Iddo, and Joel, Benaiah.

44 Tous ceux-là avaient épousé des femmes étrangères, et il y en avait parmi ces femmes qui avaient apporté des fils.

All these, had taken foreign women, —and had begotten of them children.
