Ézéchiel 33

1 Et la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée en ces mots:

The word of the LORD came to me, saying,

2 Fils de l'homme, parle aux enfants de ton peuple et dis-leur: Si je faisais venir l'épée sur un pays, et que le peuple du pays prît dans son sein un homme dont ils fissent leur sentinelle,

"Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and tell them, 'When I bring the sword on a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman;

3 et qui, voyant venir l'épée sur le pays, sonnât de la trompette, pour avertir le peuple;

if, when he sees the sword come on the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;

4 si quelqu'un, entendant le son de la trompette, ne recevait pas l'avertissement, et que l'épée vînt et le surprît, son sang pèserait sur sa tête:

then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet, and doesn't take warning, if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be on his own head.

5 il a ouï le son de la trompette, et n'a pas reçu l'avertissement, son sang pèse sur sa tête. Mais s'il reçoit l'avertissement, il sauvera son âme.

He heard the sound of the trumpet, and didn't take warning; his blood shall be on him; whereas if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul.

6 Que si la sentinelle voyant venir l'épée, ne sonne pas de la trompette, et que, sans que le peuple soit averti, l'épée arrive et ôte la vie à un seul homme, cet homme périra par suite de son crime, mais je redemanderai son sang à la sentinelle.

But if the watchman sees the sword come, and doesn't blow the trumpet, and the people aren't warned, and the sword comes, and take any person from among them; he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.'

7 Or, fils de l'homme, je t'ai établi sentinelle pour la maison d'Israël, afin que de ma bouche tu entendes la parole, et que tu les avertisses de ma part.

"So you, son of man, I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel; therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.

8 Si je dis à l'impie: Impie, tu mourras! et que tu ne parles pas pour détourner par tes avis l'impie de sa voie, cet impie mourra par suite de son crime, mais je te redemanderai son sang.

When I tell the wicked, 'O wicked man, you shall surely die,' and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way; that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at your hand.

9 Mais si par tes avis tu as cherché à détourner l'impie de sa voie, pour qu'il la quitte, s'il ne la quitte pas, il mourra par suite de son crime; mais toi, tu auras sauvé ton âme.

Nevertheless, if you warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he doesn't turn from his way; he shall die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.

10 Donc, fils de l'homme, dis à la maison d'Israël: Vous dites: « Nous sommes sous le poids de nos péchés et de nos crimes, et c'est par eux que nous périssons; comment donc pourrions-nous vivre? »

"You, son of man, tell the house of Israel: 'Thus you speak, saying, "Our transgressions and our sins are on us, and we pine away in them; how then can we live?"'

11 Dis-leur: Par ma vie, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, je ne prends point plaisir à la mort de l'impie, mais à ce que l'impie renonce à sa voie, et qu'il vive. Quittez, quittez vos mauvaises voies! Pourquoi voudriez-vous la mort, maison d'Israël?

Tell them, 'As I live,' says the LORD, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn, turn from your evil ways; for why will you die, house of Israel?'

12 Et toi, fils de l'homme, dis aux enfants de ton peuple: La justice du juste ne le sauvera pas au jour qu'il péchera; et l'impiété de l'impie ne sera pas pour lui une cause de ruine, au jour qu'il abandonnera son impiété, de même que le juste n'aura pas dans sa justice une cause de vie, le jour qu'il deviendra pécheur.

"You, son of man, tell the children of your people, 'The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his disobedience; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turns from his wickedness; neither shall he who is righteous be able to live thereby in the day that he sins.'

13 Si je dis du juste: Qu'il ait la vie! et que, se confiant en sa justice, il fasse le mal, il ne lui sera point tenu compte de toute sa justice, et il mourra par suite du mal qu'il a fait.

When I say to the righteous "He shall surely live," but he trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but he shall die because of the iniquity he has committed.

14 Mais si je dis de l'impie: Qu'il meure! et que, renonçant à ses péchés, il agisse selon le droit et la justice,

Again, when I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die'; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right;

15 rendant le gage, restituant ce qu'il a pris, se conduisant selon les commandements qui donnent la vie, sans faire rien qui soit mal; il vivra, ne mourra point.

if the wicked restore the pledge, give again that which he had taken by robbery, walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.

16 De tous les péchés qu'il aura commis, il ne sera point tenu compte contre lui: il a fait ce qui est droit et juste; il vivra.

None of his sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him: he has done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.

17 Cependant les enfants de ton peuple disent: « La voie du Seigneur n'est pas droite; » mais c'est votre voie qui n'est pas droite.

"Yet the children of your people say, 'The way of the LORD is not just': but as for them, their way is not just.

18 Quand le juste renonce à sa justice et fait le mal, il en meurt.

When the righteous turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall even die in it.

19 Et quand l'impie renonce à son impiété et fait ce qui est droit et juste, par là il obtient la vie.

When the wicked turns from his wickedness, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby.

20 Et vous dites: « La voie du Seigneur n'est pas droite! » Je vous jugerai chacun de vous selon la voie que vous suivez, maison d'Israël.

Yet you say, 'The way of the LORD is not just.' House of Israel, I will judge every one of you after his ways."

21 Et la douzième année, le dixième mois, le cinquième jour du mois, depuis notre déportation, un homme qui s'était échappé de Jérusalem, arriva auprès de moi et dit: La ville est prise!

It happened in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one who had escaped out of Jerusalem came to me, saying, "The city has been struck."

22 Or la main de l'Éternel s'était fait sentir à moi la veille de l'arrivée de ce fugitif, et m'avait ouvert la bouche quand il arriva auprès de moi le matin; et ainsi, ma bouche s'ouvrit, et je ne fus plus muet.

Now the hand of the LORD had been on me in the evening, before he who was escaped came; and he had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more mute.

23 Et la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée en ces mots:

The word of the LORD came to me, saying,

24 Fils de l'homme, les habitants de ces ruines dans le pays d'Israël disent: « Abraham était un seul homme, et il a obtenu la propriété du pays; or nous sommes nombreux; la propriété du pays nous est dévolue. »

"Son of man, they who inhabit those waste places in the land of Israel speak, saying, 'Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance.'

25 C'est pourquoi, dis-leur: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Vous mettez du sang dans ce que vous mangez, et vous levez les yeux vers vos idoles, et vous répandez le sang; et vous posséderiez le pays!

Therefore tell them, 'Thus says the LORD: "You eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood: and shall you possess the land?

26 Vous vous appuyez sur votre épée; vous, femmes, vous commettez des abominations; vous déshonorez la femme l'un de l'autre; et vous posséderiez le pays!

You stand on your sword, you work abomination, and every one of you defiles his neighbor's wife: and shall you possess the land?"'

27 Parle-leur ainsi: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Oui, par ma vie, ceux qui sont dans les ruines périront par l'épée, et ceux qui sont dans les champs, je les livrerai en proie aux bêtes féroces, et ceux qui sont dans les forts et dans les cavernes, mourront de la peste.

"You shall tell them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "As I live, surely those who are in the waste places shall fall by the sword; and him who is in the open field will I give to the animals to be devoured; and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves shall die of the pestilence.

28 Et du pays je ferai un désert et une solitude, et leur insolent orgueil prendra fin, et les montagnes d'Israël deviendront un désert que personne ne traverse.

I will make the land a desolation and an astonishment; and the pride of her power shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, so that none shall pass through.

29 Alors ils sauront que je suis l'Éternel, quand je ferai du pays un désert et une solitude à cause de toutes les abominations qu'ils ont commises.

Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment, because of all their abominations which they have committed."'

30 Quant à toi, fils de l'homme, les enfants de ton peuple s'entretiennent de toi entre les murs et dans les portes de leurs maisons, et ils se parlent l'un à l'autre, chacun à son frère, et disent: « Venez donc, et écoutez quelle parole émane de l'Éternel! »

"As for you, son of man, the children of your people talk of you by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, everyone to his brother, saying, 'Please come and hear what is the word that comes forth from the LORD.'

31 Et ils viennent à toi, comme un concours de peuple, et s'assoient devant toi, comme étant mon peuple, et ils écoutent tes paroles, mais ils ne les mettent point en pratique: mais ils font ce qui leur plaît, et leur cœur s'attache à leur cupidité.

They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain.

32 Et voici, tu es pour eux comme un chant agréable par la beauté de la voix et l'harmonie de la musique; ils écoutent tes paroles, mais ne les mettent point en pratique.

Look, you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.

33 Mais quand viendront [les maux], et voici, ils arrivent! ils comprendront qu'il y avait un prophète au milieu d'eux.

When this comes to pass, (look, it comes), then shall they know that a prophet has been among them."
