Ézéchiel 17
1 Et la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée en ces mots:
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:
2 Fils de l'homme, propose une énigme et une parabole à la maison d'Israël,
'Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel,
3 et dis: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Un grand aigle, ayant de grandes ailes et de longues pennes, couvert de plumes de toutes couleurs, vint sur le Liban et prit la cime des cèdres.
and say: Thus saith the Lord GOD: A great eagle with great wings and long pinions, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the top of the cedar;
4 Il cueillit la tête des tendres rameaux, et l'apportant dans un pays marchand, il la déposa dans une ville de commerce.
He cropped off the topmost of the young twigs thereof, and carried it into a land of traffic; he set it in a city of merchants.
5 Et il prit un des rejetons du pays, et le déposa dans un sol fertile, le mit près d'une eau abondante, et dans un lit de terre il le planta.
He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful soil; he placed it beside many waters, he set it as a slip.
6 Et il poussa, et devint une vigne développée, dont la tige était basse, et les rameaux tournés vers l'aigle, et dont les racines demeuraient sous lui: il devint une vigne qui jeta des rameaux et produisit des pampres.
And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose tendrils might turn toward him, and the roots thereof be under him; so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.
7 Et il y avait un autre grand aigle, qui avait de grandes ailes et un épais plumage. Et voici, cette vigne portait avidement ses racines de son côté, et du lit de terre où elle était plantée, elle étendait ses sarments vers lui, afin d'être arrosée par lui.
There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers; and, behold, this vine did bend its roots toward him, and shot forth its branches toward him, from the beds of its plantation, that he might water it.
8 [Cependant] elle avait été plantée dans un bon sol, près d'abondantes eaux, pour pousser des rameaux et porter du fruit, pour devenir une vigne superbe.
It was planted in a good soil by many waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a stately vine.
9 Dis: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Prospérera-t-elle? [L'autre aigle] n'arrachera-t-il pas ses racines, et n'enlèvera-t-il pas ses fruits, afin qu'elle sèche, et que le feuillage qu'elle a poussé, sèche? Et ce ne sera ni avec toute la force de son bras, ni avec un peuple nombreux, qu'il l'enlèvera de sa racine.
Say thou: Thus saith the Lord GOD: Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither, yea, wither in all its sprouting leaves? neither shall great power or much people be at hand when it is plucked up by the roots thereof.
10 Voici, elle est plantée, mais prospérera-t-elle! Si le vent d'Orient l'atteint, ne séchera-t-elle pas? Sur le lit de terre où elle pousse, elle séchera.
Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? Shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? In the beds where it grew it shall wither.'
11 Et la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée en ces mots: Dis à la race rebelle: Ignorez-vous ce que cela signifie?
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:
12 Dis: Voici, le roi de Babel est venu à Jérusalem, et s'est saisi de son roi et de ses princes, et les a amenés auprès de lui à Babel.
'Say now to the rebellious house: Know ye not what these things mean? tell them: Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and brought them to him to Babylon;
13 Et il a pris un rejeton de la race royale, et traité alliance avec lui, et lui a fait prêter un serment, et a emmené les principaux du pays,
and he took of the seed royal, and made a covenant with him, and brought him under an oath, and the mighty of the land he took away;
14 voulant que le royaume fût humilié, afin qu'il ne s'enorgueillît pas, qu'il gardât son alliance, et qu'elle fût maintenue.
that his might be a lowly kingdom, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand.
15 Mais il lui fut rebelle en envoyant ses députés en Egypte pour en obtenir des chevaux et dès hommes en grand nombre. Pourra-t-il réussir, échapper, celui qui fait de telles choses? Il a rompu l'alliance, et il échapperait!
But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? shall he break the covenant, and yet escape?
16 Par ma vie, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, c'est dans la résidence même du roi qui l'a fait roi, dont il a méprisé le serment et rompu l'alliance, c'est auprès de lui, à Babel, qu'il mourra.
As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he broke, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.
17 Et avec une grande armée et un peuple nombreux, Pharaon ne fera rien pour lui durant la guerre, quand on élève des terrasses et bâtit des tours pour ôter bien des vies.
Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company succour him in the war, when they cast up mounds and build forts, to cut off many souls;
18 Il a méprisé le serment et rompu l'alliance, et quoiqu'il eût promis de sa propre main, il a cependant fait tout cela; il n'échappera pas!
seeing he hath despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape.
19 C'est pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Par ma vie, oui, c'est mon serment qu'il a méprisé, et mon alliance qu'il a rompue, et je ferai retomber cela sur sa tête.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: As I live, surely Mine oath that he hath despised, and My covenant that he hath broken, I will even bring it upon his own head.
20 Et j'étendrai mon réseau sur lui, afin qu'il se prenne dans mon filet, et je l'amènerai à Babel, et là j'entrerai en débat avec lui sur le crime dont il s'est rendu coupable envers moi.
And I will spread My net upon him, and he shall be taken in My snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his treachery that he hath committed against Me.
21 Et toute l'élite de tous ses bataillons tombera sous l'épée, et les survivants seront dispersés à tous les vents, et ainsi vous saurez que c'est moi, l'Éternel, qui ai parlé.
And all his mighty men in all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward every wind; and ye shall know that I the LORD have spoken it.
22 Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Moi aussi je prendrai une cime des cèdres élevés, et je la placerai; au sommet de leurs rameaux je cueillerai un tendre rameau et le planterai moi-même sur une montagne haute et éminente.
Thus saith the Lord GOD: Moreover I will take, even I, of the lofty top of the cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it upon a high mountain and eminent;
23 C'est sur une haute montagne d'Israël que je le planterai, et il poussera des branches et portera du fruit, et deviendra un superbe cèdre, et toutes les espèces d'oiseaux et de volatiles viendront y faire leur demeure, ils feront leur demeure à l'ombre de ses rameaux.
in the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it; and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a stately cedar; and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing, in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell.
24 Et tous les arbres des campagnes connaîtront que c'est moi, l'Éternel, qui aurai humilié l'arbre élevé et élevé l'arbre humble, que j'aurai fait sécher l'arbre vert et verdir l'arbre sec. Moi, l'Éternel, je l'ai dit et je le ferai.
And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I the LORD have spoken and have done it.'
