Exode 18

1 Et Jéthro, prêtre de Madian, beau-père de Moïse, apprit tout ce que Dieu avait fait pour Moïse et pour Israël, son peuple, en retirant Israël d'Egypte.

Now news came to Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, of all God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, and how the Lord had taken Israel out of Egypt.

2 Alors Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, prit Tsippora, femme de Moïse, après son renvoi,

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away,

3 et ses deux fils dont l'un se nommait Gerson, car il avait dit: Je suis hôte dans un pays étranger;

And her two sons, one of whom was named Gershom, for he said, I have been living in a strange land:

4 et le nom de l'autre était Éliézer (Dieu est en aide), « car le Dieu de mon père me fut en aide et me déroba au glaive de Pharaon. »

And the name of the other was Eliezer, for he said, The God of my father was my help, and kept me safe from the sword of Pharaoh:

5 Jéthro donc, beau-père de Moïse, et ses fils et sa femme arrivèrent vers Moïse au désert où il campait, à la montagne de Dieu.

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to where Moses had put up his tent in the waste land, by the mountain of God.

6 Et il avisa Moïse: Moi, ton beau-père Jéthro, j'arrive chez toi, ainsi que ta femme et ses deux fils avec elle.

And he said to Moses, I, your father-in-law, have come to you, with your wife and your two sons.

7 Alors Moïse sortit à la rencontre de son beau-père, et il s'inclina et l'embrassa, et ils se demandèrent mutuellement de leurs nouvelles, puis ils entrèrent dans la tente.

And Moses went out to his father-in-law, and went down on his face before him and gave him a kiss; and they said to one another, Are you well? and they came into the tent.

8 Et Moïse fit à son beau-père le récit de tout ce que l'Éternel avait fait à Pharaon et à l'Egypte pour l'amour d'Israël, de toutes les tribulations qui leur étaient survenues en route, et dont l'Éternel les avait délivrés.

And Moses gave his father-in-law an account of all the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians because of Israel, and of all the troubles which had come on them by the way, and how the Lord had given them salvation.

9 Et Jéthro se réjouit de tout le bien que l'Éternel avait fait à Israël, en le sauvant de la main des Égyptiens.

And Jethro was glad because the Lord had been good to Israel, freeing them from the power of the Egyptians.

10 Et Jéthro dit: Béni soit l'Éternel qui vous a sauvés de la main des Égyptiens et de la main de Pharaon, qui a sauvé le peuple de la main des Égyptiens.

And Jethro said, Praise be to the Lord, who has taken you out of the hand of Pharaoh and out of the hand of the Egyptians; freeing the people from the yoke of the Egyptians.

11 Maintenant je reconnais que l'Éternel est plus grand que tous les dieux, et qu'il l'a été par le moyen même que l'orgueil des Égyptiens avait employé contre eux.

Now I am certain that the Lord is greater than all gods, for he has overcome them in their pride.

12 Et Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, prit un holocauste et des victimes pour les offrir à Dieu; et Aaron et tous les Anciens d'Israël vinrent manger le pain avec le beau-père de Moïse en la présence de Dieu.

Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, made a burned offering to God: and Aaron came, with the chiefs of Israel, and had a meal with Moses' father-in-law, before God.

13 Et le lendemain Moïse siégeait pour rendre la justice au peuple, et le peuple entourait Moïse du matin au soir.

Now on the day after, Moses took his seat to give decisions for the people: and the people were waiting before Moses from morning till evening.

14 Et le beau-père de Moïse voyant tout ce qu'il avait à faire pour le peuple, dit: Quelle fonction remplis-tu là auprès du peuple? Pourquoi es-tu seul à siéger, et tout le peuple est-il à ton audience du matin au soir?

And when Moses' father-in-law saw all he was doing, he said, What is this you are doing for the people? why are you seated here by yourself, with all the people waiting before you from morning till evening?

15 Et Moïse dit à son beau-père: C'est que le peuple vient à moi pour consulter Dieu.

And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to get directions from God:

16 Quand ils ont une affaire, ils viennent à moi et je suis arbitre entre une partie et l'autre, et je leur fais connaître les statuts de Dieu et ses lois.

And if they have any question between themselves, they come to me, and I am judge between a man and his neighbour, and I give them the orders and laws of God.

17 Et le beau-père de Moïse lui dit: La manière dont tu t'y prends, n'est pas bonne.

And Moses' father-in-law said to him, What you are doing is not good.

18 Tu t'épuises ainsi que ce peuple qui t'entoure; car la chose est trop forte pour toi, tu ne saurais en venir à bout seul.

Your strength and that of the people will be completely used up: this work is more than you are able to do by yourself.

19 Or sois docile à ma voix, je vais te donner un conseil, et que Dieu soit avec toi! Sois auprès de Dieu le représentant du peuple, et porte les affaires devant Dieu,

Give ear now to my suggestion, and may God be with you: you are to be the people's representative before God, taking their causes to him:

20 et enseigne-leur les statuts et les lois, et montre-leur la voie qu'ils ont à suivre, et la conduite qu'ils ont à tenir.

Teaching them his rules and his laws, guiding them in the way they have to go, and making clear to them the work they have to do.

21 Et toi cherche parmi tout le peuple des hommes capables, craignant Dieu, des hommes sûrs, ennemis de la cupidité, et prépose-les sur eux comme chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante et chefs de dix.

But for the rest, take from among the people able men, such as have the fear of God, true men hating profits wrongly made; and put such men over them, to be captains of thousands, captains of hundreds and of fifties and of tens;

22 Et ils rendront la justice au peuple en tout temps, et ils porteront devant toi toutes les grandes affaires, et ils jugeront eux-mêmes les petites causes; ainsi, ils t'allégeront le fardeau et ils le soutiendront avec toi.

And let them be judges in the causes of the people at all times: and let them put before you all important questions, but in small things let them give decisions themselves: in this way, it will be less hard for you, and they will take the weight off you.

23 Si tu t'y prends de cette sorte et que Dieu t'y autorise, tu pourras y tenir, et tout ce peuple aussi arrivera en bon point à sa destination.

If you do this, and God gives approval, then you will be able to go on without weariness, and all this people will go to their tents in peace.

24 Et Moïse fut docile à la voix de son beau-père, et fit tout ce qu'il avait dit.

So Moses took note of the words of his father-in-law, and did as he had said.

25 Et Moïse choisit des hommes capables parmi tout Israël, et les mit à la tête du peuple, comme chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante, et chefs de dix.

And he made selection of able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, captains of thousands, captains of hundreds and of fifties and of tens.

26 Et ils rendirent la justice au peuple en tout temps: ils portaient devant Moïse les causes difficiles, et ils jugeaient eux-mêmes les petites causes.

And they were judges in the causes of the people at all times: the hard questions they put before Moses; but on every small point they gave decisions themselves.

27 Et Moïse prit congé de son beau-père, qui regagna son pays.

And Moses let his father-in-law go away, and he went back to his land.
