Esther 5

1 Et le troisième jour Esther prit son costume de reine et se présenta dans la cour intérieure du palais royal vis-à-vis de la demeure du roi. Et le roi était assis sur son trône royal dans le palais royal, en face de l'entrée du palais.

And it came to pass, on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the house of the king, over against the house of the king, —and, the king, was sitting upon his royal seat, in the royal house, over against the opening of the house.

2 Et quand le roi vit la reine Esther arrêtée dans la cour, elle trouva grâce à ses yeux; et le roi tendit vers Esther le sceptre d'or qui était dans sa main, et Esther s'avança et toucha le bout du sceptre.

And it came to pass, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favour in his eyes, —and the king held out to Esther, the golden sceptre which was in his hand, so Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.

3 Et le roi lui dit: Que veux-tu, reine Esther? et qu'est-ce que tu demandes? quand ce serait la moitié de mon royaume, tu l'obtiendrais.

Then said the king unto her, What aileth thee, Queen Esther? and what is thy request? Unto the half of the kingdom, shall it be given thee.

4 Et Esther dit: Si le roi l'agrée, que le roi avec Aman vienne aujourd'hui au banquet que je lui ai préparé.

Then said Esther, If, unto the king, it seem good, let the king with Haman come in this day, unto the banquet which I have prepared for him.

5 Et le roi dit: Vite, allez chercher Aman pour faire ce qu'a dit Esther. Le roi et Aman vinrent donc au banquet qu'Esther avait préparé.

And the king said, Hasten ye Haman, to perform the word of Esther. So the king with Haman came in, unto the banquet which Esther had prepared,

6 Et le roi dit à Esther, lorsque l'on but le vin: Quelle est ta demande? elle te sera accordée; et quel est ton désir? quand ce serait la moitié de mon royaume, il sera satisfait.

Then said the king unto Esther, during the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, that it may be granted thee?—and what is thy request—unto the half of the kingdom—that it may be performed?

7 Alors Esther répondit et dit: Voici ce que je demande et désire:

Then answered Esther, and said, —As touching my petition and my request,

8 Si j'ai trouvé grâce aux yeux du roi, et s'il plaît au roi de m'accorder ma demande et de satisfaire mon désir, que le roi avec Aman vienne au banquet que je veux préparer pour eux, et demain je ferai réponse à la question du roi.

If I have found favour in the eyes of the king, and if, unto the king, it seem good, to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king with Haman come in unto the banquet which I will prepare for them, and, to-morrow, I will do according to the word of the king.

9 Et Aman sortit ce jour-là joyeux et de bonne humeur; mais lorsqu'Aman aperçut Mardochée dans la porte du roi, sans qu'il se levât et se courbât devant lui, Aman fut rempli de fureur contre Mardochée.

Then went Haman forth on that day, joyful and of a merry heart, —but, when Haman saw Mordecai in the gate of the king, that he rose not up nor moved because of him, then was Haman filled with wrath against Mordecai.

10 Mais Aman se contint. Et arrivé à la maison, il manda ses amis et Zérès, sa femme.

Nevertheless Haman restrained himself, and came into his own house, —and sent and brought in his friends, and Zeresh his wife;

11 Et Aman leur fit le détail de sa magnifique opulence, du nombre de ses fils, et de toute la grandeur que le roi lui avait donnée, et du rang où il l'avait élevé plus haut que les Grands et les serviteurs du roi.

and Haman recounted unto them the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, —and all the things wherein the king had promoted him to power, and how he had advanced him, above the rulers and the servants of the king.

12 Aman dit encore: Bien plus, la reine Esther m'a admis avec le roi au banquet qu'elle nous a donné, sans personne autre que moi, et même pour demain je suis invité chez elle avec le roi.

And Haman said, Moreover Esther the queen did bring in no one with the king into the banquet which she had prepared, saving myself, —yea moreover, even for to-morrow, I, am invited unto her, with the king.

13 Mais tout cela m'est indifférent tant que je vois Mardochée, le Juif, assis dans la porte du roi.

Yet, all this, sufficeth me not, —so long as, I, see Mordecai the Jew, sitting in the gate of the king.

14 Alors Zérès, sa femme et tous ses amis lui dirent: Que l'on dresse un poteau, haut de cinquante coudées, et demain demande au roi qu'on y pende Mardochée, puis tu accompagneras le roi au festin, content. Et la proposition plut à Aman, qui fit dresser le poteau.

Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him, Let them make ready a gallows, of the height of fifty cubits, and, in the morning, speak thou unto the king, that they hang Mordecai thereon, then go with the king into the banquet joyfully. And the thing seemed good before Haman, and he made ready the gallows.
