Ecclésiaste 7

1 Bonne réputation vaut mieux que bon parfum, et le jour de la mort, que le jour de la naissance.

A good name is better than precious oil; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

2 Mieux vaut aller dans la maison du deuil, que d'aller dans la maison du festin; car c'est là la fin de tous les hommes, et le vivant y rentre en lui-même.

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living will lay it to his heart.

3 Mieux vaut la tristesse que le rire; car avec un visage triste, le cœur devient bon.

Vexation is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart may be gladdened.

4 Le cœur des sages est dans la maison du deuil, mais le cœur des fous est dans la maison de la joie. –

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

5 Mieux vaut écouter la censure d'un sage, que d'être un auditeur des chansons des fous.

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

6 Car tel le pétillement des épines sous la chaudière, tel est le rire du fou; c'est aussi là une vanité.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool; this also is vanity.

7 Car l'ambition d'opprimer rend le sage extravagant, et les présents corrompent le cœur. –

Surely oppression turneth a wise man into a fool; and a gift destroyeth the understanding.

8 Mieux vaut la fin d'une chose que son commencement; mieux vaut patience que présomption. –

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof; and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

9 Ne sois point en ton âme prompt à t'indigner! car l'indignation se dépose dans le sein de l'insensé. –

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

10 Ne dis pas: Pourquoi les jours d'autrefois étaient-ils meilleurs que ceux-ci? Car ce n'est pas la sagesse qui te dicterait cette question. –

Say not thou: 'How was it that the former days were better than these?' for it is not out of wisdom that thou inquirest concerning this.

11 La sagesse est aussi avantageuse qu'un héritage, et c'est un profit pour ceux qui voient le soleil.

Wisdom is good with an inheritance, yea, a profit to them that see the sun.

12 Car la sagesse offre un abri, l'argent offre un abri; mais l'avantage reste à la science: la sagesse donne la vie à ceux qui la possèdent. –

For wisdom is a defence, even as money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom preserveth the life of him that hath it.

13 Considère l'action de Dieu; car qui peut rendre droit ce qu'il a fait courbe? –

Consider the work of God; for who can make that straight, which He hath made crooked?

14 Au jour du bonheur, sois heureux, et au jour malheur, ouvre les yeux! Dieu est l'auteur de celui-ci, aussi bien que de celui-là, et cela, afin que de son avenir l'homme ne découvre rien.

In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; God hath made even the one as well as the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.

15 J'ai vu tout cela durant mes jours de vanité. Il est tel juste qui périt malgré sa justice, et tel impie qui prolonge ses jours malgré sa méchanceté. –

All things have I seen in the days of my vanity; there is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his evil-doing.

16 Ne sois pas juste à l'excès, et ne te montre pas trop sage! Pourquoi te détruirais-tu?

Be not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself overwise; why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

17 Ne sois pas impie à l'excès, et ne deviens pas un insensé! Pourquoi mourrais-tu avant ton heure?

Be not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish; why shouldest thou die before thy time?

18 Il est bon que tu tiennes à ce dernier avis, et que tu ne te départes point du premier; car celui qui craint Dieu, échappe à toutes ces choses. –

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of the one; yea, also from the other withdraw not thy hand; for he that feareth God shall discharge himself of them all.

19 La sagesse rend le sage plus fort que dix capitaines qui sont dans une place. –

Wisdom is a stronghold to the wise man more than ten rulers that are in a city.

20 Non, il n'est sur la terre pas un homme juste qui fasse le bien et ne pèche point.

For there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

21 Ne prends non plus pas garde à tous les propos qu'on tient, afin de ne pas t'entendre maudire par ton serviteur.

Also take not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee;

22 Car bien des fois aussi ton cœur te rappelle que de même tu as maudit les autres.

for oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

23 J'ai tenté toutes ces choses avec la sagesse. Je dis: Je veux être sage, mais elle reste à distance de moi.

All this have I tried by wisdom; I said: 'I will get wisdom'; but it was far from me.

24 Ce qui est lointain et profond, profond, qui saurait l'atteindre? –

That which is is far off, and exceeding deep; who can find it out?

25 Je me suis mis avec mon cœur à faire la ronde, pour connaître et explorer et chercher la sagesse et la raison, et pour connaître l'impiété, la folie, la déraison et le délire.

I turned about, and applied my heart to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the reason of things, and to know wickedness to be folly, and foolishness to be madness;

26 Et je trouvai quelque chose de plus amer que la mort, c'est la femme dont le cœur est un lacs et un filet, et les mains, des chaînes. Celui qui est bon devant Dieu, lui échappe; mais le pécheur est enlacé par elle.

and I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands; whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

27 Voyez! c'est ici ce que j'ai trouvé en comparant une chose avec une autre pour trouver la raison;

Behold, this have I found, saith Koheleth, adding one thing to another, to find out the account;

28 voici ce que mon âme cherche encore sans que je l'aie trouvé: un homme, sur mille je l'ai trouvé; mais une femme, dans tout ce nombre je ne l'ai pas trouvée.

which yet my soul sought, but I found not; one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

29 La seule chose, prends-y garde, que j'aie trouvée, c'est que Dieu créa les hommes droits, mais eux, ils ont cherché beaucoup de détours.

Behold, this only have I found, that God made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
