Ecclésiaste 3
1 Toute chose a son temps, et toute affaire son moment a sous le ciel.
To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2 Il est un temps pour naître, et un temps pour mourir; il est un temps pour planter, et un temps pour arracher les plants;
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up [that which is] planted;
3 il est un temps pour tuer, et un temps pour guérir; il est un temps pour démolir, et un temps pour édifier;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 il est un temps pour pleurer, et un temps pour rire; il est un temps pour se frapper la poitrine, et un temps pour danser;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 il est un temps pour jeter les pierres, et un temps pour ramasser les pierres; il est un temps pour embrasser, et un temps pour s'abstenir d'embrasser;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 il est un temps pour chercher, et un temps pour laisser perdre; il est un temps pour conserver, et un temps pour se défaire;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 il est un temps pour déchirer, et un temps pour coudre; il est un temps pour se taire, et un temps pour parler;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 il est un temps pour aimer, et un temps pour haïr; il est un temps de guerre, et un temps de paix.
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
9 Que gagne celui qui agit, à se peiner?
What profit hath he that worketh in that in which he laboreth?
10 J'ai vu la tâche que Dieu a donnée aux enfants des hommes, pour qu'ils s'y exercent.
I have seen the labor, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.
11 Il fait toute chose belle en son temps; quoiqu'il ait mis dans leur cœur [le sentiment] de l'éternité, ils ne parviennent cependant pas à comprendre l'œuvre que Dieu fait, du commencement à la fin.
He hath made every [thing] beautiful in its time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
12 Je comprends qu'ils n'ont d'autre bien que de se réjouir, et de s'accorder du bien-être durant leur vie;
I know that [there is] no good in them, but for [a man] to rejoice, and to do good in his life.
13 et que, quand tel homme mange et boit et goûte des jouissances tout en travaillant, c'est aussi là un don de Dieu.
And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor, it [is] the gift of God.
14 Je comprends que tout ce que Dieu opère est éternel; il n'y a rien à y ajouter, et rien à en retrancher, et Dieu opère afin qu'on le craigne.
I know that, whatever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be added to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth [it], that [men] should fear before him.
15 Ce qui est, a été jadis; et ce qui est à venir, a été jadis; et Dieu reproduit ce qui est passé.
That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.
16 Et je considérai encore sous le soleil le siège du jugement, il y avait iniquité; et le siège de la justice, il y avait iniquité.
And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, [that] wickedness [was] there; and the place of righteousness, [that] iniquity [was] there.
17 Je dis en mon cœur: Dieu jugera le juste et le méchant; car le moment [viendra] pour toute affaire et pour toute œuvre, alors.
I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked: for [there is] a time there for every purpose and for every work.
18 Je dis en mon cœur, quant aux enfants des hommes, que le but de Dieu a été de leur découvrir et de les mettre à même de voir qu'il en est d'eux comme des animaux.
I said in my heart concerning the state of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.
19 Car le sort des enfants des hommes est le même que le sort des animaux, et ils ont un même sort. Ils meurent les uns comme les autres; tous ils ont le même esprit de vie, et l'homme n'a aucun avantage sur l'animal; car tout est vanité.
For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yes, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no pre-eminence above a beast: for all [is] vanity.
20 Tout marche à un rendez-vous commun. Tout naquit de la poudre, et tout rentre dans la poudre.
All go to one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
21 Qui connaît l'esprit de vie des enfants des hommes, lequel monte en haut et l'esprit de vie de l'animal, lequel descend en bas dans la terre?
Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
22 Je vis donc qu'il n'y a rien de mieux sinon que l'homme ait de la joie de ce qu'il fait; car c'est là son lot. Car qui le fera venir pour voir ce qui sera après lui?
Wherefore I perceive that [there is] nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that [is] his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?
