Deutéronome 9
1 Écoute, Israël, tu vas aujourd'hui passer le Jourdain pour marcher à la conquête de nations grandes et fortes plus que toi, de villes grandes et fortifiées jusques au ciel,
Heare O Israel, Thou shalt passe ouer Iorden this day, to goe in and to possesse nations greater and mightier then thy selfe, and cities great and walled vp to heauen,
2 du peuple des Anakites, grand et de haute taille que tu connais et duquel tu as ouï dire: Qui tiendrait tête aux Anakites?
A people great and tall, euen the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak?
3 Or, sache maintenant que c'est l'Éternel, ton Dieu, qui marchera à votre tête, en feu dévorant; c'est lui qui les détruira, lui qui les fera plier devant toi, et tu les chasseras et les extermineras bien vite, comme l'Éternel te l'a promis.
Vnderstand therefore that this day ye Lord thy God is he which goeth ouer before thee as a consuming fire: he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them downe before thy face: so thou shalt cast them out and destroy them suddenly, as the Lord hath said vnto thee.
4 Ne dis pas en ton cœur, lorsque l'Éternel, ton Dieu, les dissipera devant toi: C'est à raison de ma justice que l'Éternel m'a fait parvenir à la conquête de ce pays; quand c'est à raison de l'impiété de ces nations-là que l'Éternel les chasse devant toi.
Speake not thou in thine heart (after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out before thee) saying, For my righteousnesse the Lord hath brought me in, to possesse this land: but for the wickednesse of these nations the Lord hath cast them out before thee.
5 Ce n'est pas à raison de ta justice et de la droiture de ton cœur que tu viens conquérir leur pays, mais c'est à raison de l'impiété de ces nations-là que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, les chasse devant toi, et afin de mettre à effet la promesse que l'Éternel fit par serment à tes pères, à Abraham, à lsaac et à Jacob.
For thou entrest not to inherite their lande for thy righteousnesse, or for thy vpright heart: but for the wickednesse of those nations, the Lord thy God doth cast them out before thee, and that he might performe the worde which the Lord thy God sware vnto thy fathers, Abraham, Izhak, and Iacob.
6 Reconnais donc que ce n'est pas pour ta justice que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne ce beau pays pour en faire la conquête; car tu es un peuple au col roide.
Vnderstand therefore, that ye Lord thy God giueth thee not this good land to possesse it for thy righteousnes: for thou art a stifnecked people.
7 Rappelle-toi, n'oublie pas comment tu as provoqué la colère de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, dans le désert; depuis le jour que tu es sorti du pays d'Egypte jusqu'à votre arrivée en ce lieu-ci, vous avez été en rébellion contre l'Éternel.
Remember, and forget not, howe thou prouokedst the Lord thy God to anger in the wildernesse: since the day that thou diddest depart out of the land of Egypt, vntill ye came vnto this place ye haue rebelled against the Lord.
8 Et en Horeb vous avez irrité l'Éternel, et Il s'est courroucé contre vous au point de penser à vous détruire,
Also in Horeb ye prouoked the Lord to anger so that the Lord was wroth with you, euen to destroy you.
9 lorsque je montai à la montagne pour recevoir les Tables de pierre, Tables de l'alliance que l'Éternel concluait avec vous. Et je demeurai sur la montagne quarante jours et quarante nuits sans manger de pain et sans boire d'eau;
When I was gone vp into the mount, to receiue the tables of stone, the tables, I say, of the couenant, which the Lord made with you: and I abode in the mount fourtie daies and fourtie nights, and I neither ate bread nor yet dranke water:
10 et l'Éternel me donna les deux Tables de pierre écrites du doigt de Dieu et portant le texte de toutes les paroles que l'Éternel vous avait dites sur la montagne, du milieu du feu le jour de l'Assemblée.
Then the Lord deliuered me two tables of stone, written with the finger of God, and in them was conteyned according to all the wordes which the Lord had said vnto you in the mount out of the middes of the fire, in the day of the assemblie.
11 Et au bout des quarante jours et des quarante nuits, l'Éternel me donna les deux Tables de pierre, Tables de l'alliance,
And when the fourtie dayes and fourtie nightes were ended, the Lord gaue me the two tables of stone, the tables, I say, of the couenant.
12 et l'Éternel me dit: Lève-toi, hâte-toi de descendre d'ici, car ton peuple, que tu as retiré de l'Egypte, forfait; ils ont bientôt quitté la voie que je leur avais prescrite: ils se sont fabriqué une idole de fonte.
And the Lord said vnto me, Arise, get thee downe quickly from hence: for thy people which thou hast brought out of Egypt, haue corrupt their wayes: they are soone turned out of the way, which I commanded them: they haue made them a molten image.
13 Puis l'Éternel me parla en ces termes: Je considère ce peuple-là; et, voici, c'est un peuple au col roide;
Furthermore, the Lord spake vnto me, saying, I haue seene this people, and beholde, it is a stifnecked people.
14 ne m'arrête pas! je veux les anéantir et effacer leur nom de dessous les Cieux, et faire de toi un peuple plus fort et plus grand que lui.
Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and put out their name from vnder heaue, and I wil make of thee a mightie nation, and greater then they be.
15 Me retournant donc je descendis de la montagne, les deux Tables de l'alliance dans mes deux mains, et le feu embrasait la montagne.
So I returned, and came downe from the Mount (and the Mount burnt with fire, and ye two Tables of the couenant were in my two handes)
16 Et je vis! et voilà que vous aviez péché contre l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous vous étiez fait un veau de fonte; vous aviez bientôt quitté la voie que vous avait prescrite l'Éternel.
Then I looked, and beholde, ye had sinned against the Lord your God: for ye had made you a molten calfe, and had turned quickly out of the way which the Lord had commanded you.
17 Alors saisissant les deux Tables je les jetai hors de mes deux mains et les brisai sous vos yeux.
Therefore I tooke the two Tables, and cast them out of my two handes, and brake them before your eyes.
18 Ensuite je m'abattis devant l'Éternel, comme auparavant, quarante jours et quarante nuits, sans manger de pain ni boire d'eau, à cause de tous vos péchés que vous aviez commis en faisant ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, pour l'irriter.
And I fell downe before the Lord, fourtie dayes, and fourtie nightes, as before: I neither ate bread nor dranke water, because of al your sinnes, which ye had committed, in doing wickedly in the sight of the Lord, in that ye prouoked him vnto wrath.
19 Car j'appréhendais, vu la colère et le courroux dont l'Éternel était animé contre vous au point de vouloir vous anéantir, mais l'Éternel m'exauça encore cette fois.
(For I was afraide of the wrath and indignation, wherewith the Lord was mooued against you, euen to destroy you) yet the Lord heard me at that time also.
20 Et l'Éternel était aussi tellement irrité contre Aaron qu'il voulait le détruire, et j'intercédai alors aussi pour Aaron.
Likewise ye Lord was very angrie with Aaron, euen to destroy him: but at that time I prayed also for Aaron.
21 Et l'objet de votre péché, le veau que vous aviez fait, je le pris et je le brûlai au feu; et l'ayant concassé et bien trituré jusqu'à le réduire en poudre menue, j'en jetai la poudre dans la rivière qui descend de la montagne.
And I tooke your sinne, I meane the calfe which ye had made, and burnt him with fire, and stamped him and ground him small, euen vnto very dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the riuer, that descended out of the mount.
22 Et à Thabeèra et à Massa et aux tombeaux de la convoitise vous excitâtes la colère de l'Éternel,
Also in Taberah, and in Massah and in Kibrothhattaauah ye prouoked ye Lord to anger.
23 et aussi lorsque l'Éternel vous envoyait de Cadès-Barnéa en disant: Montez et faites la conquête du pays que je vous ai donné; vous fûtes rebelles à l'ordre de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, et vous n'eûtes pas foi en lui, et n'obéîtes point à sa voix.
Likewise when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Goe vp, and possesse the land which I haue giuen you, then ye rebelled against the commandement of the Lord your God, and beleeued him not, nor hearkened vnto his voyce.
24 Vous avez été en rébellion contre l'Éternel, depuis que je vous connais.
Ye haue bene rebellious vnto the Lord, since the day that I knewe you.
25 Je fus donc abattu devant l'Éternel pendant les quarante jours et les quarante nuits où je m'étais abattu, parce que l'Éternel avait parlé de vous détruire
Then I fell downe before ye Lord fourtie dayes and fourtie nightes, as I fell downe before, because ye Lord had said, that he woulde destroy you.
26 et je suppliai l'Éternel en disant: Seigneur, Éternel, ne perds pas ton peuple et ton héritage que tu as racheté, dans ta grande puissance, que tu as retiré de l'Egypte d'une main forte.
And I prayed vnto the Lord, and saide, O Lord God, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatnesse, whom thou hast brought out of Egypt by a mightie hand.
27 Souviens-toi de tes serviteurs, d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob, ne regarde pas à la roideur de ce peuple, ni à son impiété ni à son péché,
Remember thy seruants Abraham, Izhak, and Iaakob: looke not to ye stubburnes of this people, nor to their wickednes, nor to their sinne,
28 de peur que le pays d'où tu nous as retirés, ne dise: C'est par impuissance de l'Éternel à les introduire dans le pays qu'il leur avait promis, et parce qu'il les haïssait, qu'il les en a tirés pour les faire mourir dans le désert.
Lest the countrey, whence thou broughtest them, say, Because ye Lord was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, or because he hated them, he caried them out, to slay them in the wildernesse.
29 Hé! ils sont ton peuple et ton héritage que tu as délivré par ta grande force et de ton bras étendu.
Yet they are thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mightie power, and by thy stretched out arme.
