Daniel 5
1 Le roi Belschazar donna un grand festin à ses mille grands, et il but du vin en présence de ces mille personnes.
Belshazzar the king has made a great feast to one thousand of his great men, and before the one thousand he is drinking wine;
2 Belschazar, animé par le vin, dit qu'on apportât les vases d'or et d'argent que Nébucadnézar, son père, avait enlevés du temple de Jérusalem, pour que le roi et ses grands, ses femmes et ses concubines bussent dans ces vases.
Belshazzar has said—while tasting the wine—to bring in the vessels of gold and of silver that his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple that [is] in Jerusalem, that the king may drink with them, and his great men, his wives, and his concubines.
3 Alors on apporta les vases d'or qui avaient été enlevés du temple de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, et le roi et ses grands, ses femmes et ses concubines burent dans ces vases.
Then they have brought in the vessels of gold that had been taken out of the temple of the house of God that [is] in Jerusalem, and the king and his great men, his wives and his concubines, have drunk with them;
4 Ils burent du vin et chantèrent des louanges à leurs dieux d'or et d'argent, d'airain, de fer, de bois et de pierre.
they have drunk wine, and have praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 Dans ce moment même les doigts d'une main d'homme s'avancèrent, et écrivirent, vis-à-vis du lustre, sur la chaux de la muraille du palais du roi, et le roi vit la main qui écrivait.
In that hour fingers of a man’s hand have come forth, and they are writing in front of the lampstand, on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king is seeing the extremity of the hand that is writing;
6 Aussitôt le roi changea de couleur, et ses pensées le troublèrent, et les nerfs de ses reins se détendirent, et ses genoux s'entre-heurtèrent.
then the king’s countenance has changed, and his thoughts trouble him, and the joints of his loins are loosed, and his knees are striking against one another.
7 Le roi s'écria avec force qu'on mandât les devins, les Chaldéens et les mages. Le roi prit la parole et dit aux sages de Babel: Tout homme qui lira ces caractères, et m'en expliquera la signification, sera revêtu de la pourpre, et d'une chaîne d'or à son cou, et occupera la troisième place dans le gouvernement de mon empire.
The king calls mightily, to bring up the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king has answered and said to the wise men of Babylon, that, “Any man who reads this writing, and shows me its interpretation, he puts on purple, and a bracelet of gold [is] on his neck, and he rules third in the kingdom.”
8 Puis tous les sages du roi furent introduits; mais ils ne purent ni lire les caractères, ni en indiquer au roi la signification.
Then all the wise men of the king are coming up, and they are not able to read the writing, and to make known the interpretation to the king;
9 Alors le roi Belschazar fut extrêmement troublé, et il changea de couleur, et ses grands furent interdits.
then King Belshazzar is greatly troubled, and his countenance is changing in him, and his great men are perplexed.
10 Dans cette situation du roi et des grands, la reine parut dans la salle du festin. La reine prit la parole et dit: O roi! puisses-tu vivre éternellement! que tes pensées ne te troublent pas, et ne change pas de couleur!
The queen, on account of the words of the king and his great men, has come up to the banquet-house. The queen has answered and said, “O king, live for all ages; do not let your thoughts trouble you, nor your countenance be changed:
11 Il est dans ton royaume un homme en qui est l'esprit des dieux saints, et du temps de ton père en lui s'est trouvée une lumière, une intelligence, une sagesse pareille à la sagesse des dieux; et le roi Nébucadnézar, ton père, ton père, ô roi, l'a établi chef des devins, des enchanteurs, des Chaldéens, des mages,
there is a man in your kingdom in whom [is] the spirit of the holy gods: and in the days of your father, light, and understanding, and wisdom—as the wisdom of the gods—was found in him; and your father King Nebuchadnezzar, chief of the scribes, enchanters, Chaldeans, soothsayers, established him—your father, O king—
12 parce qu'un esprit éminent, et la connaissance et l'entente de l'interprétation des songes, et de l'explication des énigmes et de la solution des questions difficiles s'étaient rencontrées en lui, savoir, en Daniel, dont le roi avait changé le nom en celui de Beltsazar; que Daniel soit donc mandé, et il te donnera l'explication.
because that an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of enigmas, and loosing of knots was found in him, in Daniel, whose name the king made Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and the interpretation he shows.”
13 Alors Daniel fut introduit devant le roi. Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel: Es-tu ce Daniel, l'un des captifs Juifs que le roi, mon père, a amenés de Juda?
Then Daniel has been caused to come up before the king; the king has answered and said to Daniel, “You are that Daniel who [is] of the sons of the expulsion of Judah, whom my father the king brought in out of Judah?
14 J'ai ouï dire de toi que l'esprit des dieux est en toi, et qu'on trouve en toi et lumière, et intelligence, et sagesse éminente.
And I have heard of you, that the spirit of the gods [is] in you, and light, and understanding, and excellent wisdom have been found in you.
15 Or les sages et les devins ont été amenés devant moi pour lire ces caractères et m'en découvrir le sens, mais ils ne peuvent m'expliquer le sens de la chose.
And now, caused to come up before me have been the wise men, the enchanters, that they may read this writing, and its interpretation to cause me to know: and they are not able to show the interpretation of the thing:
16 Mais j'ai ouï dire de toi que tu sais donner les explications, et résoudre les questions difficiles; si donc tu peux lire ces caractères, et m'en faire connaître le sens, tu seras revêtu de la pourpre, et tu auras une chaîne d'or à ton cou, et tu occuperas la troisième place dans mon empire.
and I have heard of you, that you are able to give interpretations, and to loose knots: now, behold—you are able to read the writing, and its interpretation to cause me to know—purple you put on, and a bracelet of gold [is] on your neck, and you rule third in the kingdom.”
17 Alors Daniel répondit et dit en présence du roi: Garde tes dons, et fais tes largesses à un autre! Cependant je lirai les caractères au roi, et je lui en indiquerai le sens.
Then Daniel has answered and said before the king, “Your gifts be to yourself, and give your fee to another; nevertheless, the writing I read to the king, and the interpretation I cause him to know;
18 O roi, le Dieu très haut accorda à Nébucadnézar, ton père, royauté et grandeur, et gloire et magnificence;
you, O king, God Most High, a kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and honor, gave to your father Nebuchadnezzar:
19 et à cause de la grandeur qu'il lui avait donnée, les peuples, les nations et les hommes de toute langue étaient tous craintifs et tremblants devant lui; il faisait mourir qui il voulait, et donnait la vie à qui il voulait, et il élevait qui il voulait, et il abaissait qui il voulait.
and because of the greatness that He gave to him, all peoples, nations, and languages were trembling and fearing before him: whom he willed he was slaying, and whom he willed he was keeping alive, and whom he willed he was raising up, and whom he willed he was making low;
20 Mais comme son cœur s'éleva, et que son esprit s'enorgueillit jusqu'à l'insolence, il fut précipité de son trône royal, et sa gloire lui fut ôtée;
and when his heart was high, and his spirit was strong to act proudly, he has been caused to come down from the throne of his kingdom, and his glory they have caused to pass away from him,
21 et il fut chassé du milieu des enfants des hommes, et son cœur devint semblable à la brute, et il demeura avec les onagres, comme le bœuf il mangea de l'herbe, et son corps fut trempé de la rosée du ciel, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût reconnu que le Dieu très haut a la domination sur la royauté de l'homme, et qu'il y élève qui Il veut.
and he is driven from the sons of men, and his heart has been like with the beasts, and with the wild donkeys [is] his dwelling; they cause him to eat the herb like oxen, and by the dew of the heavens is his body wet, until he has known that God Most High is ruler in the kingdom of men, and whom He wills He raises up over it.
22 Mais toi, son fils Belschazar, tu n'as pas humilié ton cœur, quoique tu saches toutes ces choses;
And you, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though all this you have known;
23 et tu t'es élevé contre le Maître du ciel, et les vases de sa maison ont été apportés devant toi, et toi et tes grands, tes femmes et tes concubines, vous avez bu du vin dans ces vases, et tu as chanté des louanges aux dieux d'argent et d'or, d'airain, de fer, de bois et de pierre, qui ne voient, ni n'entendent, ni ne savent rien, et le Dieu qui tient ton souffle dans sa main et qui préside à toutes tes destinées, tu ne l'as pas honoré.
and against the Lord of the heavens you have lifted up yourself; and the vessels of His house they have brought in before you, and you, and your great men, your wives, and your concubines, are drinking wine with them, and gods of silver, and of gold, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone, that are not seeing, nor hearing, nor knowing, you have praised: and the God in whose hand [is] your breath, and all your ways, Him you have not honored.
24 En conséquence, c'est de par lui qu'a été envoyée cette main qui a tracé ces caractères.
Then from before Him is the extremity of the hand sent, and the writing is noted down;
25 Et voici les caractères qui ont été tracés: Compté! Compté! Pesé! et Partage!
and this [is] the writing that is noted down: Numbered, Numbered, Weighed, and Divided.
26 Voici le sens du mot Compté: Dieu a fait le compte de ton règne et y met fin.
This [is] the interpretation of the thing: Numbered—God has numbered your kingdom, and has finished it.
27 Pesé: Tu as été pesé à la balance et trouvé trop léger.
Weighed—You are weighed in the balances, and have been found lacking.
28 Partage: Ton empire sera partagé et donné aux Mèdes et aux Perses.
Divided—Your kingdom is divided, and it has been given to the Medes and Persians.”
29 Alors, sur l'ordre de Belschazar on revêtit Daniel de la pourpre, et on lui mit au cou une chaîne d'or, et l'on publia devant lui qu'il occuperait la troisième place dans l'empire.
Then Belshazzar has spoken, and they have clothed Daniel with purple, and a bracelet of gold [is] on his neck, and they have proclaimed concerning him that he is the third ruler in the kingdom.
30 Cette nuit même, Belschazar, roi des Chaldéens, fut tué.
In that night Belshazzar king of the Chaldeans is slain,
31 Et Darius le Mède reçut l'empire, étant âgé de soixante-deux ans.
and Darius the Mede has received the kingdom when a son of sixty-two years.
