Daniel 2
1 Et la seconde année du règne de Nébucadnézar, Nébucadnézar eut des songes. Et son esprit était agité, et il avait perdu le sommeil.
In the secounde yeer of the rewme of Nabugodonosor, Nabugodonosor siy a dreem; and his spirit was aferd, and his dreem fledde awei fro hym.
2 Et le roi ordonna de convoquer les devins et les enchanteurs, et les mages et les Chaldéens pour qu'ils exposassent au roi ses songes; et ils vinrent et se présentèrent devant le roi.
Therfor the kyng comaundide, that the dyuynours, and astronomyens, and witchis, and Caldeis schulden be clepid togidere, that thei schulden telle to the kyng hise dremys; and whanne thei weren comun, thei stoden bifor the king.
3 Et le roi leur dit: J'ai eu un songe, et mon esprit s'agite pour avoir la connaissance de ce songe.
And the king seide to hem, Y siy a dreem, and Y am schent in mynde, and Y knowe not what Y siy.
4 Et les Chaldéens dirent au roi en langue araméenne: O roi, puisses-tu vivre éternellement! dis le songe à tes serviteurs, et nous t'en découvrirons le sens.
And Caldeis answeriden the kyng bi Sirik langage, Kyng, liue thou with outen ende; seie thi dreem to thi seruauntis, and we schulen schewe to thee the expownyng therof.
5 Le roi répondit et dit aux Chaldéens: La parole est émanée de moi! Si vous ne me faites connaître le songe et sa signification, vous serez coupés par morceaux, et vos maisons seront changées en tas de fumier.
And the kyng answeride, and seide to Caldeis, The word is goen awei fro me; if ye schewen not to me the dreem, and expownyng therof, ye schulen perische, and youre housis schulen be forfetid.
6 Mais si vous m'exposez le songe et sa signification, vous recevrez de moi des dons et des largesses, et de grands honneurs; indiquez-moi donc quel est le songe, et quel en est le sens!
Forsothe if ye tellen the dreem, and the expownyng therof, ye schulen take of me meedis and yiftis, and myche onour; therfor schewe ye to me the dreem, and the interpretyng therof.
7 Ils répondirent de nouveau, et dirent: Que le roi dise le songe à ses serviteurs, et nous en découvrirons le sens.
Thei answeriden the secounde tyme, and seiden, The kyng seie the dreem to hise seruauntis, and we schulen schewe the interpretyng therof.
8 Le roi répondit et dit: Je comprends, à en être certain, que c'est du temps que vous voulez gagner, par la raison que vous voyez que la parole est émanée de moi.
The kyng answeride, and seide, Certis Y woot, that ye ayenbien the tyme, and witen that the word is goen awei fro me.
9 Si donc vous ne me faites pas connaître le songe, c'est là votre unique but, et vous vous êtes entendus pour me débiter des mensonges et des faussetés, jusqu'à ce que le moment ait changé: ainsi, racontez-moi le songe, et je saurai que vous êtes capables de m'en donner l'explication.
Therfor if ye schewen not to me the dreem, o sentence is of you, for ye maken an interpretyng bothe fals and ful of disseit, that ye speke to me til the tyme passe; therfor seie ye the dreem to me, that Y wite, that ye speke also the veri interpretyng therof.
10 Les Chaldéens répliquèrent devant le roi, et dirent: Sur la terre sèche il n'est personne qui soit en état d'exposer la chose énoncée par le roi: aussi, jamais roi, quelque grand et puissant qu'il fût, n'a exigé chose pareille d'aucun devin, enchanteur et Chaldéen.
Therfor Caldeis answeriden bifor the kyng, and seiden, Kyng, no man is on erthe, that mai fille thi word; but nether ony greet man and myyti of kyngis axith siche a word of ony dyuynour, and astronomyen, and of a man of Caldee.
11 La chose qu'exige le roi est trop difficile, et pour la découvrir au roi il n'y en a pas d'autre que les dieux qui n'habitent pas au milieu des mortels.
For the word which thou, kyng, axist, is greuouse, nether ony schal be foundun, that schal schewe it in the siyt of the king, outakun goddis, whos lyuyng is not with men.
12 A cause de cela le roi se mit en colère, et fut fort courroucé, et il ordonna de faire périr tous les sages de Babel.
And whanne this word was herd, the kyng comaundide, in woodnesse and in greet ire, that alle the wise men of Babiloyne schulden perische.
13 Et l'édit fut promulgué, et les sages devaient être mis à mort; et l'on cherchait Daniel et ses compagnons pour les mettre à mort.
And bi the sentence goon out, the wise men weren slayn; and Danyel and hise felows weren souyt, that thei schulden perische.
14 Alors Daniel fit une réponse sage et prudente à Arioch, chef des satellites du roi, qui était sorti pour mettre à mort les sages de Babel.
Thanne Danyel axide of the lawe and sentence, of Ariok, prynce of chyualrie of the kyng, that was gon out to sle the wise men of Babiloyne.
15 Prenant la parole il dit à Arioch, général du roi: Pourquoi cet édit sévère de par le roi? Alors Arioch fit connaître à Daniel ce qui en était.
And he axide hym, that hadde take power of the kyng, for what cause so cruel a sentence yede out fro the face of the kyng. Therfor whanne Ariok hadde schewid the thing to Danyel,
16 Et Daniel entra, et pria le roi de lui accorder un délai et la permission de donner au roi l'explication.
Danyel entride, and preyede the kyng, that he schulde yyue tyme to hym to schewe the soilyng to the kyng.
17 Puis Daniel se rendit dans sa maison, et informa Hananias, Misaël, et Azarias, ses compagnons, de l'état des choses:
And he entride in to his hous, and schewide the nede to Ananye, and to Misael, and Asarie,
18 qu'il leur fallait implorer la miséricorde du Dieu du ciel au sujet de ce mystère, afin que Daniel et ses compagnons ne périssent pas avec les autres sages de Babel.
hise felowis, that thei schulden axe merci of the face of God of heuene on this sacrament; and that Danyel and hise felowis schulden not perische with othere wise men of Babiloyne.
19 Après cela, dans une vision nocturne le mystère fut dévoilé à Daniel; puis Daniel bénit le Dieu du ciel.
Thanne the priuyte was schewid to Danyel bi a visioun in nyyt. And Danyel blesside God of heuene, and seide,
20 Daniel prit la parole et dit: Béni soit le nom de Dieu de l'éternité à l'éternité! car Il a, oui, Il a sagesse et puissance!
The name of the Lord be blessid fro the world, and til in to the world, for wisdom and strengthe ben hise;
21 C'est lui qui opère les vicissitudes des temps et des époques, qui dépose des rois, et élève des rois, qui accorde la sagesse aux sages, et l'intelligence à ceux qui savent comprendre.
and he chaungith tymes and ages, he translatith rewmes and ordeyneth; he yyueth wisdom to wise men, and kunnyng to hem that vndurstonden techyng, ether chastisyng;
22 Il met à nu les profondeurs et les secrets, Il pénètre ce qui est ténébreux, et la lumière demeure auprès de lui.
he schewith deepe thingis and hid, and he knowith thingis set in derknessis, and liyt is with hym.
23 A toi, Dieu de mes pères, j'élève mes actions de grâces et mes louanges, parce que tu m'as accordé la sagesse et la force, et que tu m'as révélé ce que je te demandais; car tu nous as révélé la pensée du roi.
God of oure fadris, Y knowleche to thee, and Y herie thee, for thou hast youe wisdom and strengthe to me; and now thou hast schewid to me tho thingis, whiche we preieden thee, for thou hast openyd to vs the word of the kyng.
24 Ensuite de cela Daniel entra chez Arioch, à qui le roi avait donné l'office de faire périr les sages de Babel; il alla et lui parla ainsi: Ne fais point périr les sages de Babel! Introduis-moi auprès du roi, et j'exposerai au roi l'explication.
Aftir these thingis Danyel entride to Ariok, whom the kyng hadde ordeyned, that he schulde leese the wise men of Babiloyne, and thus he spak to hym, Leese thou not the wise men of Babiloyne; leede thou me in bifor the siyt of the kyng, and Y schal telle the soilyng to the kyng.
25 Alors Arioch en hâte introduisit Daniel auprès du roi, auquel il parla en ces termes: J'ai trouvé un homme parmi les captifs de Juda, qui présentera au roi l'explication.
Thanne Ariok hastynge ledde in Danyel to the kyng, and seide to him, Y haue foundun a man of the sones of passyng ouer of Juda, that schal telle the soilyng to the kyng.
26 Le roi répondit et dit à Daniel dont le nom était Beltsazar: Es-tu à même de me dire quel songe j'ai eu, et quel en est le sens?
The kyng answeride, and seide to Danyel, to whom the name was Balthasar, Whethir gessist thou, that thou maist verili schewe to me the dreem which Y siy, and the interpretyng therof?
27 Daniel répondit en présence du roi et dit: « Le mystère qui est l'objet de la demande du roi, ni sages, ni enchanteurs, ni devins, ni mages ne sont capables de le dévoiler au roi.
And Danyel answeride bifore the king, and seide, The priuytee which the kyng axith, wise men, and astronomyens, and dyuynours, and lokeris of auteris, moun not schewe to the kyng.
28 Mais il est dans le ciel un Dieu qui dévoile les mystères, et Il révèle au roi Nébucadnézar ce qui aura lieu dans la suite des temps. Voici le songe et la vision qui se sont présentés à ton esprit, pendant que tu étais couché.
But God is in heuene, that schewith priuytees, which hath schewid to thee, thou king Nabugodonosor, what thingis schulen come in the laste tymes. Thi dreem and visiouns of thin heed, in thi bed, ben sich.
29 O roi, tes pensées se sont élevées en toi pendant que tu étais couché, et se sont portées sur ce qui arrivera après ce temps-ci; et Celui qui dévoile les mystères, t'a révélé l'avenir.
Thou, kyng, bigunnest to thenke in thi bed, what was to comynge aftir these thingis; and he that schewith priuetees, schewide to thee what thingis schulen come.
30 Quant à moi, ce n'est point par une sagesse que j'aurais de plus que tous les vivants, que ce mystère m'a été dévoilé, mais c'est afin que le sens en soit découvert au roi, et que tu comprennes les pensées de ton cœur.
And this sacrament is schewid to me, not bi wisdom which is in me more than in alle lyuynge men, but that the interpretyng schulde be maad opyn to the kyng, and thou schuldist knowe the thouytis of thi soule.
31 O roi, tu avais une vision, et voici, [tu voyais] une grande figure; cette figure était immense, et elle avait un éclat extraordinaire; elle était debout devant toi, et son aspect était formidable.
Thou, kyng, siyest, and lo! as o greet ymage; thilke ymage was greet, and hiy in stature, and stood bifore thee, and the loking therof was ferdful.
32 La figure était ainsi composée: elle avait la tête d'or fin, la poitrine et les bras d'argent, le ventre et les hanches d'airain,
The heed of this ymage was of best gold, but the brest and armes weren of siluer; certis the wombe and thies weren of bras,
33 les jambes de fer, les pieds en partie de fer, et en partie d'argile.
but the leggis weren of irun; forsothe sum part of the feet was of irun, sum was of erthe.
34 Tu regardais, regardais, quand sans l'aide de mains se détacha une pierre qui frappa la figure à ses pieds qui étaient de fer et d'argile, et les mit en pièces.
Thou siyest thus, til a stoon was kit doun of the hil, with outen hondis, and smoot the ymage in the irun feet therof and erthene feet, and al to-brak tho.
35 Alors, à ce seul coup, fer, argile, airain, argent et or furent pulvérisés, et devinrent comme la balle qui s'élève de l'aire au blé, et le vent les emporta, et on n'en retrouva point de traces; et la pierre qui avait frappé la figure, devint une grande montagne, et remplit toute la terre.
Thanne the irun, tijl stoon, ether erthene vessel, bras, siluer, and gold, weren al to-brokun togidere, and dryuun as in to a deed sparcle of a large somer halle, that ben rauyschid of wynd, and no place is foundun to tho; forsothe the stoon, that smoot the ymage, was maad a greet hil, and fillide al erthe.
36 Tel est le songe, et nous allons en exposer le sens devant le roi.
This is the dreem. Also, thou kyng, we schulen seie bifor thee the interpretyng therof.
37 Tu es, ô roi, le roi des rois, à qui le Dieu du ciel a donné l'empire, la puissance et la force et la gloire;
Thou art kyng of kyngis, and God of heuene yaf to thee rewme, strengthe, and empire, and glorie;
38 et partout où habitent des enfants des hommes, des bêtes des champs et des oiseaux du ciel, Il les a remis entre tes mains, et t'a fait le souverain d'eux tous; c'est toi qui es la tête d'or.
and he yaf in thin hond alle thingis, in whiche the sones of men, and the beestis of the feeld, and the briddis of the eir dwellen, and ordeynede alle thingis vndur thi lordschip; therfor thou art the goldun heed.
39 Et après toi s'élèvera un autre empire, moindre que toi, puis un troisième et autre empire d'airain qui dominera sur toute la terre.
And another rewme lesse than thou schal rise aftir thee; and the thridde rewme, an other of bras, that schal haue the empire of al erthe.
40 Et un quatrième empire aura la force du fer; de même que le fer brise et fracasse tout, oui, comme un fer qui met en pièces, il fracassera et pulvérisera le tout.
And the fourthe rewme schal be as irun, as irun makith lesse, and makith tame alle thingis, so it schal make lesse, and schal al to-breke alle these rewmes.
41 Quant à ce que tu as vu les pieds et les orteils être en partie d'argile de potier, en partie de fer, c'est que ce sera un empire divisé; mais il y aura en lui quelque chose de la force du fer; car tu as vu le fer allié avec l'argile.
Forsothe that thou siest a part of the feet and fyngris of erthe of a pottere, and a part of irun, the rewme shal be departid; which netheles schal rise of the plauntyng of irun, `bi that that thou siest irun meynd with a tijl stoon of clei,
42 Quant aux orteils qui étaient en partie de fer et en partie d'argile, c'est que cet empire en partie sera fort, et en partie fragile.
and the toos of the feet in parti of irun, and in parti of erthe, in parti the rewme schal be sad, and in parti to-brokun.
43 Quant à ce que tu as vu le fer mêlé à l'argile, c'est qu'ils s'allieront entre eux par le mélange de races d'hommes, mais ils ne seront pas adhérents entre eux, voici, ce sera comme le fer qui ne s'allie pas avec l'argile.
Forsothe that thou siest irun meynd with a tiel stoon of clei, sotheli tho schulen be meynd togidere with mannus seed; but tho schulen not cleue to hem silf, as irun mai not be meddlid with tyel stoon.
44 Mais dans les temps de ces mêmes rois, le Dieu du ciel élèvera un empire éternellement indestructible, et dont la souveraineté ne sera dévolue à aucun autre peuple; il pulvérisera et anéantira tous ces empires; mais lui-même il subsistera éternellement,
Forsothe in the daies of tho rewmes, God of heuene shal reise a rewme, that schal not be distried with outen ende, and his rewme schal not be youun to another puple; it schal make lesse, and schal waste alle these rewmes, and it schal stonde with outen ende,
45 comme tu as vu une pierre sans l'aide de mains se détacher de la montagne, et mettre en pièces le fer, l'airain, l'argile, l'argent et l'or. Le grand Dieu a fait connaître au roi ce qui arrivera après ce temps-ci; et le songe est véridique, et l'explication en est fidèle. »
bi this that thou siest, that a stoon was kit doun of the hil with outen hondis, and maad lesse the tiel stoon, and irun, and bras, and siluer, and gold. Greet God hath schewid to the kyng, what thingis schulen come aftirward; and the dreem is trewe, and the interpretyng therof is feithful.
46 Alors le roi Nébucadnézar tomba sur sa face, et se prosterna devant Daniel, et commanda de répandre devant lui des offrandes et des parfums.
Thanne king Nabugodonosor felle doun on his face, and worschipide Danyel, and comaundide sacrifices and encense to be brouyt, that tho schulden be sacrifised to hym.
47 Le roi répondit à Daniel, et dit: Il est vrai! votre Dieu est le Dieu des dieux, et le Souverain des rois, et c'est lui qui dévoile les mystères, puisque tu as été capable de me dévoiler ce mystère.
Therfor the kyng spak, and seide to Danyel, Verili youre God is God of goddis, and Lord of kyngis, that schewith mysteries, for thou miytist opene this sacrament.
48 Alors le roi éleva Daniel, et lui fit des dons nombreux et considérables, et il l'établit gouverneur de toute la province de Babel, et chef de tous les sages de Babel.
Thanne the kyng reiside Danyel an hiy, and yaf many yiftis and grete to hym; and ordeynede hym prince and prefect, ether cheef iustise, ouer alle the prouynces of Babiloyne, and maister ouer alle the wise men of Babiloyne.
49 Mais sur la prière de Daniel le roi préposa à l'administration de la province de Babel, Sadrach, Mésach et Abednégo; et Daniel fut dans la Porte du roi.
Forsothe Danyel axide of the kyng, and ordeynede Sidrac, Misaac, and Abdenago ouer alle the werkis of the prouynce of Babiloyne; but Danyel hym silf was in the yatis of the kyng.
