Actes 7
1 Mais le grand prêtre dit: « Ces choses sont-elles exactes? » —
And the chief priest said: Are these things so?
2 Et il dit: « Frères et pères, écoutez: Le Dieu de la gloire est apparu à notre père Abraham, pendant qu'il se trouvait en Mésopotamie, avant de s'établir à Charran,
He replied: Brethren and fathers, hear: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, while he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
3 et Il lui a dit: « Sors de ton pays et de ta famille, et rends-toi dans le pays que Je t'indiquerai. »
and said to him: Get out from your land, and from your kindred, and come into a land that I will show you.
4 Alors étant sorti du pays des Chaldéens il s'établit à Charran. De là, après que son père fut mort, il se transféra dans ce pays-ci que vous habitez maintenant,
Then he departed from the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Charran; and thence, after his father died, he removed into this land, in which you now dwell.
5 et Il ne lui y donna point d'héritage, pas même de quoi poser son pied; et Il lui promit qu'il l'en mettrait en possession, ainsi que sa postérité après lui, quoiqu'il n'eût pas d'enfant.
And he gave him no inheritance in it, not a foot breadth: and yet he promised to give it for a possession to him, and to his posterity after him, when as yet he had no child.
6 Or voici comment Dieu s'exprima: « Sa postérité vivra en étrangère dans un pays étranger, et on l'asservira et on la maltraitera pendant quatre cents ans;
And God spoke thus: That his posterity should sojourn in a strange land, and they should enslave them and afflict them, for four hundred years.
7 et la nation par laquelle ils auront été asservis, c'est Moi qui la jugerai, dit Dieu; et après cela ils sortiront et Me rendront un culte dans ce lieu-ci. »
And the nation to which they shall be in bondage I will judge, said God; and after that, they shall come forth and serve me in this place.
8 Et Il lui donna l'alliance de la circoncision; et c'est ainsi qu'il engendra Isaac et qu'il le circoncit le huitième jour, et Isaac Jacob, et Jacob les douze patriarches.
And he gave him the covenant of circumcision, and thus he begot Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs.
9 Et les patriarches, jaloux de Joseph, le vendirent pour être emmené en Egypte; et Dieu était avec lui,
And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
10 et Il le tira de toutes ses tribulations, et Il le dota de grâce et de sagesse en présence de Pharaon roi d'Egypte, et Il le plaça à la tête de l'Egypte et de toute cette maison.
and delivered him from all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharoah, king of Egypt: and he made him governor over Egypt, and his whole house.
11 Or il survint une famine dans toute l'Egypte et dans Chanaan, et une grande tribulation, et nos pères ne trouvaient pas de quoi subsister.
And there came a famine, and great affliction on the whole land of Egypt, and of Chanaan: and our fathers found no sustenance.
12 Mais Jacob, ayant appris qu'il y avait des vivres en Egypte, y envoya nos pères une première fois,
But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent forth our fathers the first time:
13 et, au second voyage, Joseph fut reconnu par ses frères, et la race de Joseph devint manifeste pour Pharaon.
and, on their second visit, Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and the kindred of Joseph were made known to Pharaoh.
14 Puis Joseph envoya chercher son père Jacob et toute sa famille, composée de soixante et quinze personnes.
And Joseph sent and called to him his father Jacob, and all his kindred, seventy-five souls.
15 Or Jacob descendit, puis il mourut, lui et nos pères, »
And Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, himself and our fathers;
16 et ils furent transportés à Sichem, et déposés dans le sépulcre qu'Abraham avait acquis à prix d'argent des fils d'Emmor à Sichem.
and they were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulcher which Abraham bought for its value in silver, from the sons of Emmor, the father of Sychem.
17 Mais, à mesure que s'approcha le temps de la promesse dont Dieu était convenu avec Abraham, le peuple s'accrut et se multiplia en Egypte,
And as the time of the promise which God had made with an oath to Abraham drew near, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,
18 jusques à ce que surgit pour régner sur l'Egypte un autre roi qui ne savait rien de Joseph;
till another king arose, who knew not Joseph.
19 ce roi, usant de ruse avec notre race, maltraita nos pères, afin de leur faire exposer leurs enfants pour qu'ils ne restassent pas en vie.
He dealt insidiously with our race, and afflicted our fathers, so that they exposed their infants, in order that they might not live.
20 Ce fut alors que naquit Moïse, et il était beau aux yeux de Dieu; il fut élevé pendant trois mois dans la maison de son père;
At which time Moses was born; and he was exceedingly beautiful, and was nursed three months in his father’s house.
21 mais ayant été exposé, la fille de Pharaon s'en chargea et l'éleva pour elle-même comme un fils.
But having been exposed, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and educated him as her own son.
22 Et Moïse fut instruit dans toutes les branches de la sagesse des Égyptiens, et il était puissant par ses paroles et par ses œuvres.
And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
23 Mais, quand il eut atteint l'âge de quarante ans, il lui vint dans le cœur de visiter ses frères, fils d'Israël;
When he had completed his fortieth year, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.
24 et en ayant vu un qui était maltraité, il prit sa défense, et vengea celui qui était terrassé, en frappant l'Égyptien.
And seeing one of them unjustly treated, he defended and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian.
25 Or il pensait que ses frères comprendraient que Dieu, par son moyen, leur procurait une délivrance; mais ils ne le comprirent pas.
And he supposed that his brethren would understand that, by his hand, God would give them salvation: but they understood not.
26 Et le jour suivant il se montra à eux comme ils se battaient, et il cherchait à les réconcilier pour qu'ils fissent la paix, en disant: « Vous êtes frères, pourquoi vous maltraitez-vous réciproquement? »
And on the next day he showed himself to them, as they were fighting, and endeavored to persuade them to peace, saying, Men, you are brothers: why do you injure one another?
27 Mais celui qui maltraitait son prochain le repoussa en disant: « Qui est-ce qui t'a établi chef et juge sur nous?
But he that was doing the injury to his neighbor, thrust him away, saying, Who made you a ruler or a judge over us?
28 Veux-tu me tuer comme tu as tué hier l'Égyptien? »
Do you intend to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?
29 Mais Moïse s'enfuit à ces mots et il vécut en étranger dans le pays de Madiam, où il engendra deux fils.
And at that saying Moses fled, and became a resident in the land of Midian, where he begot two sons.
30 Et, au bout de quarante ans, un ange lui apparut dans le désert du mont Sina dans la flamme d'un buisson en feu,
And when forty years were completed, there appeared to him, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.
31 Et Moïse l'ayant vu fut étonné de cette apparition, et comme il s'approchait pour examiner, une voix du Seigneur se fit entendre:
When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight, and as he was drawing near to observe it, the voice of the Lord came to him:
32 « C'est Moi qui suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d'Abraham, et d'Isaac, et de Jacob! » Mais Moïse, saisi d'effroi, n'osait plus examiner.
I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not observe it.
33 Et le Seigneur lui dit: « Détache la chaussure de tes pieds, car le lieu où tu te trouves est une terre sainte;
Then said the Lord to him: Loose your shoes from your feet; for the place in which you stand is holy ground.
34 J'ai vu de Mes yeux l'oppression de Mon peuple en Egypte, et J'ai entendu ses gémissements, et Je suis descendu pour le délivrer; et maintenant va, Je t'enverrai en Egypte. »
I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them; and now come, and I will send you into Egypt.
35 Ce Moïse, qu'ils avaient renié en disant: « Qui est-ce qui t'a établi chef et juge? » c'est lui que Dieu envoya comme chef et comme libérateur avec l'assistance de l'ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson;
This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, Who made you a ruler and a judge? him God sent as a ruler and as a redeemer, by the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush.
36 c'est lui qui les fit sortir, en opérant des prodiges et des miracles en Egypte, et dans la mer Rouge, et dans le désert, pendant quarante ans.
He brought them out, after he had performed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness, forty years.
37 C'est ce Moïse qui a dit aux fils d'Israël: « Dieu vous suscitera d'entre vos frères un prophète comme moi; »
This is that Moses, who said to the sons of Israel, A prophet like me will the Lord your God raise up for you from among your brethren; him shall you hear.
38 c'est lui qui, dans l'assemblée au désert, a eu affaire avec l'ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sina, et avec nos pères, lui qui avait été choisi pour vous donner de vivants oracles;
This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers; he received the living oracles, that he might give them to us.
39 c'est à lui que nos pères refusèrent d'obéir, mais ils le repoussèrent et ils tournèrent leurs cœurs vers l'Egypte,
To him our fathers were not willing to be obedient; but they rejected him, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,
40 en disant à Aaron: « Fais-nous des dieux qui marcheront devant nous; car ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, nous ne savons ce qui lui est advenu. »
saying to Aaron: Make us gods that shall go before us; for, as for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has become of him.
41 Et ce fut alors qu'ils fabriquèrent un veau, et qu'ils offrirent un sacrifice à l'idole, et qu'ils se réjouissaient des œuvres de leurs mains.
And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
42 Mais Dieu se détourna, et Il les livra au culte de l'armée du ciel, comme il est écrit dans le livre des prophètes: « Ne M'avez-vous pas offert des sacrifices et des offrandes dans le désert pendant quarante ans, ô maison d''Israël,
But God turned and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: Your victims and your sacrifices did you offer to me for forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
43 en même temps que vous transportiez le tabernacle de Moloch et l'étoile du dieu Rompha, ces images que vous aviez faites pour les adorer? Eh bien, Je vous déporterai par delà Babylone. »
Yes, you took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your God Remphan, images which you made to worship; and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
44 Le tabernacle du témoignage était, pour nos pères dans le désert, tel que Celui qui parlait à Moïse lui avait prescrit de le construire, d'après le modèle qu'il avait vu;
The tabernacle of the testimony was with our fathers in the wilderness, built as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to build it, according to the pattern which he had seen:
45 nos pères, auxquels il fut transmis, l'introduisirent aussi avec Josué dans le pays conquis sur les nations que Dieu chassa de devant nos pères, jusques à l'époque de David,
which our fathers, who were with Joshua, received by succession, and brought into the land possessed by the Gentiles, whom God continued to drive out from the face of our fathers till the days of David,
46 qui obtint grâce devant Dieu et demanda de trouver une demeure pour la maison de Jacob;
who found favor before God, and desired to find a dwelling-place for the God of Jacob.
47 mais ce fut Salomon qui Lui bâtit une maison.
But Solomon built him a house.
48 Toutefois le Très-Haut n'habite point dans des édifices faits de main d'homme, comme dit le prophète:
Yet the Most High dwells not in temples made with hands, as says the prophet:
49 « Le ciel est Mon trône, et la terre le marchepied de Mes pieds; quelle maison M'avez-vous bâtie, dit le Seigneur, ou quel est le lieu de Mon repos?
Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What house will you build me? says the Lord; or what is the place of my rest?
50 N'est-ce pas Ma main qui a fait toutes ces choses? »
Has not my hand made all these things?
51 Hommes de col roide, et incirconcis du cœur et des oreilles, vous aussi vous résistez toujours à l'esprit saint, comme vos pères.
You stiff-necked, and uncircumcised in heart and in ears, you do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so also do you.
52 Quel prophète vos pères n'ont-ils pas persécuté? Et ils ont fait mourir ceux qui d'avance annonçaient la venue de ce juste envers lequel vous vous êtes montrés naguère traîtres et meurtriers,
Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? They slew also those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you have now become the betrayers and murderers;
53 vous qui avez reçu la loi comme des commandements d'anges, et qui ne l'avez pas observée! »
who received the law by the appointment of angels, and have not kepi, it.
54 En entendant ces paroles ils devenaient furieux en leurs cœurs et grinçaient des dents contre lui.
When they heard these things, they were enraged in their hearts, and gnashed upon him with their teeth.
55 Mais, étant lui-même rempli d'esprit saint et fixant ses regards sur le ciel, il vit la gloire de Dieu et Jésus debout à la droite de Dieu,
But being full of the Holy Spirit, he looked earnestly up into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;
56 et il dit: « Voici, je vois les cieux ouverts et le fils de l'homme debout à la droite de Dieu. »
and he said: Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.
57 Poussant alors de grands cris ils se bouchèrent les oreilles, puis ils se précipitèrent tous ensemble sur lui,
And they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and, with one consent, rushed upon him,
58 et, l'ayant jeté hors de la ville, ils le lapidaient. Et les témoins déposèrent leurs manteaux aux pieds d'un jeune homme appelé Saul,
and drove him out of the city, and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul.
59 et ils lapidaient Etienne, qui disait dans son invocation: « Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit! »
And they stoned Stephen while he was calling on the Lord, and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
60 Puis, s'étant mis à genoux, il s'écria à haute voix: « Seigneur, ne leur impute point ce péché! » Et après ces mots il mourut.
And he kneeled down and cried with a loud voice: Lord, let not this sin stand against them. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. And Saul was well pleased with his death.
