2 Samuel 24

1 Et de nouveau la colère de l'Éternel s'alluma contre les Israélites et excita David contre eux, en lui suggérant: Va, fais le recensement d'Israël et de Juda!

And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.

2 Et le Roi dit à Joab, chef de la milice, à côté de lui: Fais donc la tournée de toutes les Tribus d'Israël de Dan à Béerseba, et passe le peuple en revue pour que j'en connaisse le chiffre.

And the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people.

3 Et Joab dit au Roi: Que non seulement l'Éternel, ton Dieu, ajoute au peuple, quelque nombreux qu'il soit, cent fois autant d'hommes, mais encore que les yeux de mon Seigneur le Roi en aient le spectacle! cependant pourquoi plaît-il au Roi, mon Seigneur, de prendre cette mesure?

And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

4 Mais la parole du Roi prévalut sur Joab et sur les chefs militaires; et Joab et les chefs militaires sortirent, de l'audience du Roi pour passer le peuple d'Israël en revue.

Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

5 Et ils traversèrent le Jourdain, et ils eurent leur quartier général vers Aroër à droite de la ville sise au milieu du ravin de Gad et dans la direction de Jaëzer.

And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and unto Jazer.

6 Et ils gagnèrent Galaad et la terre neuve des habitants du Bas; et ils gagnèrent Dan-Jaan et les alentours du côté de Sidon;

then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and round about to Zidon,

7 et ils gagnèrent la place forte de Tyr et toutes les villes des Hévites et des Cananéens, et ils pénétrèrent au Midi de Juda vers Béerseba.

and came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beer-sheba.

8 Ils parcoururent ainsi la totalité du pays, et ils rentrèrent à Jérusalem au bout de neuf mois et vingt jours.

So when they had gone to and fro through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

9 Alors Joab présenta au Roi le résultat du recensement du peuple, et en Israël il y avait huit cent mille soldats tirant l'épée, et les hommes de Juda étaient au nombre de cinq cent mille.

And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10 Et David eut des remords en son cœur après qu'il eut fait le recensement du peuple, et David dit à l'Éternel: J'ai péché grandement par cet acte! Et maintenant, Éternel, veuille pardonner la faute de ton serviteur, car j'ai très follement agi!

And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: but now, O LORD, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

11 Et au lever de David le lendemain, la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Gad, le prophète, le Voyant de David, en ces termes:

And when David rose up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,

12 Va et porte à David ces paroles: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Je suspends sur toi trois menaces; choisis-en une, afin que je l'exécute.

Go and speak unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

13 Gad se présenta donc chez David et le mit au fait et lui dit: Veux-tu essuyer sept années de famine dans ton pays, ou bien fuir durant trois mois devant tes ennemis et être poursuivi par eux, ou bien avoir trois jours la peste dans ton pays? Maintenant réfléchis et vois quelle réponse je rendrai à Celui qui me délègue!

So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy foes while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days pestilence in thy land? now advise thee, and consider what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

14 Alors David dit à Gad: Je suis dans une grande perplexité!… oh! tombons entre les mains de l'Éternel, car sa miséricorde est immense, mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes!

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

15 Là-dessus l'Éternel envoya une peste en Israël depuis le matin jusqu'au terme fixé, et dans le peuple il mourut de Dan à Béerseba soixante-dix mille hommes.

So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

16 Et comme l'Ange étendait sa main sur Jérusalem pour la ravager, l'Éternel eut regret du fléau, et Il dit à l'Ange qui sévissait parmi le peuple: Assez! à présent ramène ta main! Or l'Ange de l'Éternel se trouvait alors près de l'aire d'Aravena, le Jébusite.

And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough; now stay thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

17 Et David s'adressa à l'Éternel, lorsqu'il vit l'Ange taillant parmi le peuple, et dit: Voici, j'ai péché, et c'est moi qui suis en faute; mais ceux-là, ce troupeau, qu'ont-ils fait? que ta main fonde donc sur moi et la maison de mon père!

And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done perversely: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.

18 Alors ce jour même, Gad arriva chez David et lui dit: Monte et érige à l'Éternel un autel sur l'aire d'Aravena, le Jébusite.

And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

19 Et David s'y rendit ensuite de la parole de Gad conforme à l'ordre de l'Éternel.

And David went up according to the saying of Gad, as the LORD commanded.

20 Et Aravena, qui regardait au dehors, vit le Roi et ses serviteurs se dirigeant vers lui; alors Aravena sortit, et il s'inclina devant le Roi, le visage contre terre.

And Araunah looked forth, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

21 Et Aravena dit: Dans quel but mon Seigneur le Roi vient-il trouver son serviteur? Et David dit: Dans le but d'acheter de toi l'aire pour y bâtir un autel à l'Éternel, afin d'arrêter le fléau et d'en délivrer le peuple.

And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

22 Et Aravena dit à David: Que mon Seigneur le Roi la prenne et fasse le sacrifice qu'il trouvera bon! vois! l'attelage servira pour l'holocauste et les traîneaux et les jougs des taureaux pour le bûcher.

And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, the oxen for the burnt offering, and the threshing instruments and the furniture of the oxen for the wood:

23 O Roi, Aravena fait don du tout au Roi. Et Aravena dit au Roi: Que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te soit propice!

all this, O king, doth Araunah give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee.

24 Et le Roi dit à Aravena: Non, car je veux l'acheter de toi pour un prix, et je ne veux pas offrir à l'Éternel, mon Dieu, un sacrifice qui ne me coûte rien. David acheta donc l'aire et les taureaux pour cinquante sicles d'argent.

And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will verily buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

25 Et David y éleva un autel à l'Éternel, et offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques, et l'Éternel se laissa fléchir en faveur du pays, et le fléau fut détourné d'Israël.

And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
