2 Samuel 12
1 Et l'Éternel adressa Nathan à David. Et entré chez lui, il lui dit: Dans une ville il y avait deux hommes, l'un riche, l'autre pauvre.
And the Lord sent Nathan to David: and when he was come to him, he said to him: There were two men in one city, the one rich, and the other poor.
2 Le riche avait des brebis et des bœufs en très grand nombre.
The rich man had exceeding many sheep and oxen.
3 Et pour tout bien le pauvre ne possédait qu'un seul petit agneau qu'il avait acheté, et qu'il élevait, et qui grandissait à ses côtés et avec ses fils, en même temps, et mangeait à son morceau de pain et buvait à sa coupe et couchait dans son sein et était pour lui comme une fille.
But the poor man had nothing at all but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up, and which had grown up in his house together with his children, eating of his bread, and drinking of his cup, and sleeping in his bosom: and it was unto him as a daughter.
4 Et un voyageur arriva chez l'homme riche, et il en coûtait à celui-ci de prendre parmi ses brebis ou ses bœufs de quoi traiter l'hôte qui lui venait, et il prit l'agneau de l'homme pauvre et l'apprêta pour l'homme arrivé chez lui.
And when a certain stranger was come to the rich man, he spared to take of his own sheep and oxen, to make a feast for that stranger, who was come to him, but took the poor man’s ewe, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.
5 Alors David fut enflammé d'une violente colère contre le riche et il dit à Nathan: Par la vie de l'Éternel! il mérite la mort, celui qui a fait cette action.
And David’s anger being exceedingly kindled against that man, he said to Nathan: As the Lord liveth, the man that hath done this is a child of death.
6 Il faut que pour l'agneau il donne une compensation quadruple, puisqu'il a été capable d'un tel acte, et qu'il est resté sans pitié.
He shall restore the ewe fourfold, because he did this thing, and had no pity.
7 Et Nathan dit à David: Tu es cet homme-là! Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Je t'ai oint comme Roi d'Israël, et je t'ai arraché des mains de Saül,
And Nathan said to David: Thou art the man. Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee from the hand of Saul,
8 et je t'ai donné la maison de ton maître, et ai mis les femmes de ton maître entre tes bras, et t'ai donné la maison d'Israël et de Juda, et comme si c'était trop peu, je t'aurais en sus fait tels dons pareils:
And gave thee thy master’s house and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and Juda: and if these things be little, I shall add far greater things unto thee.
9 pourquoi, au mépris de la parole de l'Éternel, as-tu fait ce qui est mal à ses yeux? tu as frappé de l'épée Urie, le Héthien, et tu lui as pris sa femme pour en faire la tienne, et lui-même tu l'as assassiné par le glaive des Ammonites.
Why therefore hast thou despised the word of the Lord, to do evil in my sight? Thou hast killed Urias the Hethite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
10 Aussi désormais le glaive ne cessera jamais de sévir dans ta maison, parce que tu m'as méprisé et que tu as pris la femme d'Urie, le Héthien, pour en faire ta femme.
Therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house, because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Urias the Hethite to be thy wife.
11 Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici, je vais faire surgir les calamités contre toi de ta propre maison, et je t'enlèverai tes femmes sous tes yeux mêmes, et je les donnerai à un autre, afin qu'il habite avec tes femmes à la vue de ce soleil.
Thus saith the Lord: Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thy own house, and I will take thy wives before thy eyes I and give them to thy neighhour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
12 Si tu as agi en cachette, moi j'exécuterai cette menace à la face de tout Israël et à la face du soleil.
For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing in the sight of all Israel, and in the sight of the sun.
13 Alors David dit à Nathan: J'ai péché contre l'Éternel! Et Nathan dit à David: Néanmoins l'Éternel a pardonné ton péché: tu ne mourras pas;
And David said to Nathan: I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said to David: The Lord also hath taken away thy sin: thou shalt not die.
14 seulement, comme par cet acte tu as provoqué les calomnies des ennemis de l'Éternel, le fils qui t'est né, doit mourir.
Nevertheless, because thou hast given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, for this thing, the child that is born to thee, shall surely die.
15 Là-dessus Nathan s'en alla dans sa maison. Et l'Éternel frappa l'enfant que la femme d'Urie avait enfanté à David, et qui fut dans un état désespéré.
And Nathan returned to his house. The Lord also struck the child which the wife of Urias had borne to David, and his life was despaired of.
16 Et David chercha Dieu pour cet enfant, et David jeûna et se renferma et passa la nuit couché sur la terre.
And David besought the Lord for the child: and David kept a fast, and going in by himself lay upon the ground.
17 Et les Anciens de sa maison firent une tentative auprès de lui pour qu'il se relevât de terre; mais il ne voulut pas et il ne prit aucun aliment avec eux.
And the ancients of his house came, to make him rise from the ground: but he would not, neither did he eat meat with them.
18 Et le septième jour l'enfant vint à mourir, et les serviteurs de David redoutaient de lui annoncer la mort de l'enfant, car ils disaient: Voici, lorsque l'enfant était encore en vie, nous lui parlions et il n'entendait pas notre voix: comment lui dirions-nous: L'enfant est mort!? il fera bien pis.
And it came to pass on the seventh day that the child died: and the servants of David feared to tell him, that the child was dead. For they said: Behold when the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he would not hearken to our voice: how much more will he afflict himself if we tell him that the child is dead?
19 Et David ayant remarqué les chuchotements de ses serviteurs, comprit que l'enfant était mort, et David dit à ses serviteurs: L'enfant est-il mort? Et ils dirent: Il est mort.
But when David saw his servants whispering, he understood that the child was dead: and he said to his servants: Is the child dead? They answered him: He is dead.
20 Alors David se leva de terre et se baigna et s'oignit et changea d'habits, et entra dans la maison de l'Éternel, et adora, puis revint dans sa maison, et sur sa demande on lui servit des aliments et il mangea.
Then David arose from the ground, and washed and anointed himself: and when he had changed his apparel, he went into the house of the Lord: and worshipped, and then he came into his own house, and he called for bread, and ate.
21 Et ses serviteurs lui dirent: Quelle est donc ta manière d'agir? Tant que vivait l'enfant, tu jeûnais et pleurais, et aussitôt après la mort de l'enfant tu te lèves et prends de la nourriture!
And his servants said to him: What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive, but when the child was dead, thou didst rise up, and eat bread.
22 Et il dit: Tant que l'enfant était en vie, je jeûnais et pleurais, car je me disais: Qui sait? peut-être l'Éternel me fera grâce, et l'enfant sera conservé.
And he said: While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept for him: for I said: Who knoweth whether the Lord may not give him to me, and the child may live?
23 Mais à présent, il est mort: pourquoi jeûnerais-je? puis-je le faire revenir? C'est moi qui vais à lui, mais lui ne reviendra pas à moi.
But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Shall I be able to bring him back any more? I shall go to him rather: but he shall not return to me.
24 Et David consola Bathséba, sa femme, et il entra chez elle et habita avec elle et elle lui enfanta un fils qu'il appela du nom de Salomon. Et l'Éternel l'aima.
And David comforted Bethsabee his wife, and went in unto her, and slept with her: I and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon, and the Lord loved him.
25 Et il le remit entre les mains du prophète Nathan qui l'appelait Iedid-Iah (aimé de l'Éternel) en vue de l'Éternel.
And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and called his name, Amiable to the Lord, because the Lord loved him.
26 Et Joab assiégeait Rabba des Ammonites, et comme il était près de prendre la ville royale,
And Joab fought against Rabbath of the children of Ammon, and laid close siege to the royal city.
27 il dépêcha des courriers à David pour lui dire: J'ai donné l'assaut à Rabba, et, qui plus est, je suis maître du quartier des eaux;
And Joab sent messengers to David, saying: I have fought against Rabbath, and the city of waters is about to be taken.
28 maintenant réunis le reste des troupes et viens attaquer la ville et la prendre, afin que ce ne soit pas moi qui la prenne et dont le nom soit nommé à son occasion.
Now therefore gather thou the rest of the people together, and besiege the city and take it: lest when the city shall be wasted by me, the victory be ascribed to my name.
29 Alors David rassembla toutes les troupes et il marcha sur Rabba et il l'assaillit et la prit.
Then David gathered all the people together, and went out against Rabbath: and after fighting, he took it.
30 Et il enleva la couronne de son Roi de dessus sa tête (or elle pesait un talent d'or et était garnie de pierreries) et il la mit sur sa propre tête et il tira de la ville un butin immense.
And he took the crown of their king from his head, the weight of which was a talent of gold, set with most precious stones, and it was put upon David’s head, and the spoils of the city which were very great he carried away.
31 Quant à sa population, il la fit sortir et subir les scies et les traîneaux ferrés et les haches de fer, et passer par leurs propres fournaises. Et ainsi traita-t-il toutes les villes des Ammonites. Ensuite David et tout le peuple retournèrent à Jérusalem.
And bringing forth the people thereof he sawed them, and drove over them chariots armed with iron: and divided them with knives, and made them pass through brickkilns: so did he to all the cities of the children of Ammon: and David returned, with all the army to Jerusalem.
